Mathematical Functions

Instructions: Solve the following exercises (This are the same that we saw in classes in the presentation
about Trigonometric Functions). Submit the solution, remember to add a front page and to be organize,
clean and clear.

1)The London Eye is a huge Ferris wheel with a diameter of 135 meters (443 feet). It completes one
rotation every 30 minutes. Riders board form a platform 2 meters above the ground.
• Express a rider's height above ground as a function of time in minutes.
• How high will be the rider at 20 minutes?

2) The temperature of a chemical reaction oscillates between a low of 35 ∘𝐶 and a high of 85 ∘𝐶. The
temperature is at its lowest point at time 𝑡=0 and reaches its maximum point over a one hour period. It
then takes the same amount of time to return to its initial temperature. Let 𝑦=𝐻(𝑡) denote the
temperature of the reaction 𝑡 hours after the reaction begins. Which of the following graph represents
the problem and why?

We need to have 3 oscillations in 6 hours

3)For the curve 𝑦 = −17cos (2𝜋𝑥 + 4) determine amplitude, period, and phase shift. Don’t forget to
add the formula or the procedure to obtain the answer.

7) Sketch a graph of one period of the function y=0.5 tan (π/2 x)

If we have A=0.5 and B=π/2, we can find SC factor an period.
The period is = π/2,so the asymtotes are at 𝑥 = ±1. At the quarter period from the origin we
have:
0.5𝜋
𝑓(0.5) = 0.5 𝑡𝑎𝑛 ( )
2
𝜋
= 0.5 𝑡𝑎𝑛 ( ) = 0.5
4
This means the curve must pass through the points (0.5,0.5), and (-0.5,-0.5). the only inflection point is
at the origin.

8) Find a formula for the function in the following graph.

The graph has the shape of a tangent function.
𝜋
One cycle extends from -4 to 4, so the period is P = 8. Since 𝑃 = |𝐵|
=
𝜋 𝜋
𝐵= =
𝑃 8
𝜋
The equation must have the form 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝐴𝑡𝑎𝑛( 𝑥)
8
To find the vertical stretch A, we can use the point (2, 2).

𝜋 𝜋
2 = 𝐴𝑡𝑎𝑛 ( ∗ 2) = 𝐴𝑡𝑎𝑛 ( )
8 4
𝜋
Because tan ( 4 ) = 1, 𝐴 = 2
𝝅
This function would have a formula 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝟐𝒕𝒂𝒏( 𝒙).

9) Graph one period of 𝑓(𝑥) = 2.5sec (0.4𝑥)

A=2.5 so the stretching factor is 2.5
2𝜋
B=0.4 so 𝑃 = = 5𝜋. The period is 5𝜋 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠
0.4
Sketch the graph of the function 𝑔(𝑥) = 2.5𝑐𝑜𝑠 (0.4𝑥)
Use the reciprocal relationship of the cosine and secant functions to draw the cosecant function
Sketch two asymptotes at x = 1.25 π and x = 3.75π. We can use two reference points, the local minimum
at (0, 2.5) and the local maximum at (2.5 π, -2.5).

𝜋 𝜋
10) Graph one period of 𝑦 = 4 sec ( 𝑥 − ) + 1
3 2
A=4
2𝜋 2𝜋 2𝜋 3
Period is: 𝐵
= 𝜋 = 1
∗𝜋=6
3
The phase shift is:
𝜋
𝐶 2 𝜋 3
= = ∗ = 1.5
𝐵 𝜋 2 𝜋
3

Sketch the vertical asymptotes, which occur at x=0, x=3, and x=6. There is a local minimum at (1.5,5) and
a local maximum at (4.5 -3)
