1.0 ENTREPRENEUR PROFILE

Disclaimer: The entrepreneur prefers not to divulge too much information regarding her personal
life and the capital of her business due to privacy.

Mrs Hung Yuk Mun is a businesswoman and a pharmacist.

She was born in Sandakan, Sabah. During her primary
school days, she attended SJK (C) Chi Hwa and later on
studied at SMJK (C) Sung Siew. After completing her
secondary education, she pursued Bachelor of Pharmacy at
Curtin University of Australia. Mrs Mun is a mother of two
children whose names are Chia Yi Chen (16) and Chia Yi
Ying (14). She began this business since she was 36. She
owns De Care Pharmacy located at Gelugor, Penang (Opposite
USM). As of now, she is working relentlessly hard to make ends meet to maintain a stable income.
She is not intending to open any branch as she is satisfied with her current premise and economic
sustainability. De Care Pharmacy was established in 2018 with one shop lot which sells various
pharmaceutical & medical products which are approved by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia

Q1: what are the factors that attracts you to venture into this business?

First and foremost, she studied pharmacy, therefore, she only ventured into pharmaceutical
business. She believes that pharmacy Is a professional course which is the prime factors that
attracts me into this business. Secondly, Mrs. Mun thinks that pharmacy business is quite
interesting know, because especially in retail, she sees different customers in her pharmacy every
day, and then she is exposed to different cases every day and it is not a boring job because she
possesses knowledge on different issues and medical condition, and gives different
recommendations accordingly. So indirectly it will actually, refreshes her knowledge. She
emphasises on the fact that one should updates their knowledge about the products via advice
and medicine counselling there are always upcoming issues.
She finds it very interesting to venture this kind of business and furthermore, because she is the
owner of the pharmacy, she can control how she wants to run it. If she works for other people,
maybe let’s say her employee is a bit money orientated, there will be a lot of, restricted the time
you spend with the customer, the advice that you want to give, because as she what could she
comprehend is that, based on the profit, like the cost of running a pharmacy, she may only have
certain products that she can sell to customer to create more profit to her employees. She affirms
that having her own pharmacy, actually, she can provide a better service, and advice to her
customers based on their condition and based on their budget.

Q2: What are the challenges you face when you began your business?

The first challenge is location as she is quite new to Penang when she started her business. She

believes that she needs a good location. Because if she needs to have a good customer base, she

needs to have more flow of customers. The second challenge, is about capital. Since she knew a

lot of merchandise, she needs to make the payment by 30 days, 14 days, because if she wants to

start up a new business, they don't give her a credit term. In most of the vendors or the suppliers,

and they need her to settle the payment by 14 days and 30 days. She clarifies that she has to ensure

she have a good capital, a start-up capital just to get her through during the first three to six months.

The third challenge is the supplier. The range of products she wants to order, have many suppliers

in Malaysia and they have different type of products also in their own distribution. In order to, get

contact with them, open up an account, to get the order actually is a very lengthy process. Those

were the three main challenges that she faced when she began setting up her pharmacy.

Q3: What are the challenges that you’re facing now?

According to Mrs. Mun, the first challenge is competition in the market as Penang is quite small.

Moreover, they have so many pharmacies. She understands that there are chain pharmacies and

independent pharmacies. She added that there is some chain pharmacy from Kuala Lumpur which

have their branches in the northern region. The second challenge is the “price war”. She mentions

that everybody attempts to offer the best price to the customer and some of them, like her pharmacy,

is not a big one organized one or chain pharmacy, and sometimes she feels that the cost price that

she gets may not be so comfortable compared to other pharmacy. The third challenge, because of

COVID-19 , the customer behaviour starts to change. They prefer to buy online and they don't come

to face to face and the walk in F2F trend has dwindled compared to before the COVID-19 situation.

To address the challenges she is currently facing, Mrs. Mun might plan to do an online pharmacy

business in the near future.

Q4: What are the skills that a new entrepreneur should acquire before venturing into

business?

Mrs Mun believes that an individual really need to capture the knowledge from that side (marketing

& business). If a person wants to run his own pharmacy, Mrs Mun could foresee the shortfall of it as

there are many things that one need to start when the individual run the business. if a person has

that kind of knowledge before, he or she want to set up their own pharmacy, she believes that is a

bonus point. The second skill is communication. How the owner of the pharmacy listens to the

customer, getting to know them a bit better, what they try to convey their message to the pharmacy

owner which and this is crucial. And then the third skills I think the new entrepreneur need is

Knowledge as it is important because retail pharmacy is from the top to the bottom, from the head

to the foot, and customers will come in different medical conditions. Therefore, that entrepreneur

have to have a very wide range of knowledge and not just clinical pharmacy but also medicines OTC

(over the counter). She also stressed that a new entrepreneur have to update their knowledge from

time to time.

Q5: What advice would you convey to new entrepreneurs who are eager to venture into

business?

New entrepreneurs need to be consistent and never give up very easy. She mentions that when a

new entrepreneur opens up their own business, they may face a lot of obstacles or like, problems,

especially from their customers. They didn't want to support them, or maybe from themselves,

because they would easily get depressed if they don't have any customer drop by to their shops in

the beginning, as nobody knows them. According to Mrs. Mun, she doesn’t have marketing

background but did everything from scratch ( some knowledge on business) but other business

orientated people will run a lot of marketing programs to attract customer in. She agrees that the

new entrepreneurs really need marketing skills and creativity. Which something she lacks. Finally,

Mrs Mun’s advice to all new entrepreneurs to work harder.
