Working principle
The air system
The air is drawn into the compressor through the inlet filter (1) and is compressed in the oil
injected rotary screw compression element (3) via the air intake (load-unload) valve (2).
Lubrication fluid is injected during the compression phase into the air and the air / oil mixture
passes through a non-return valve (4) to the oil separator element (5).
The air then passes through a minimum pressure valve (6) and is cooled by an air cooled after
cooler (7).

The condensed moisture is removed by a low pressure drop moisture separator and electronic
condensate drain (9) and the compressed air is released to the main piping.
The oil system
Lubrication fluid (11) contained in the oil receiver (5) flows under differential pressure to a
thermostatic bypass valve (13), air cooled oil cooler (12), high efficiency oil filter (14) and oil
stop valve (15) before being injected into the compression element (3) where it cools, seals
and lubricates the compression process.
The high efficiency oil filter (14) provides superior filtration compared to conventional filters
resulting in cleaner lubricant. The thermostatic bypass valve (13) ensures that the compressor
quickly reaches optimum operating temperature on start-up and maintains temperature during
periods of low load by allowing cold lubricant to bypass the oil cooler (12).
Low noise axial cooling fans provide cooling air to the oil cooler (12) and after cooler (7),
ensuring satisfactory running temperatures as well as ventilating the compressor enclosure
and electrical control panel.

ATLAS COPCO HEATLESS DESICCANT DRYER
The Atlas Copco CD 360+-1600+ are twin tower heatless adsorption dryers that remove
moisture from compressed air by adsorption process.
All components are mounted on a single common base frame completely wired and ready for
installation, with generously sized towers and piping to minimise pressure drop across the
dryer.
The dryer can supply dry air to the compressed air system with -40°C / °F pressure dew point
(PDP), or -70°C / -95°F PDP (optional).

Working principle
Wet compressed air flows upward through the desiccant from bottom to top (1). Because of
the physical properties of the desiccant the moisture will be captured in the pores of the
desiccant. Dry air leaves the unit via the outlet.
When the desiccant is saturated, it must be regenerated. The pressure in the regenerating
vessel is released. Some dry air is taken from the outlet of the dryer and is expanded to
atmospheric pressure through a purge orifice (4) and sent through the saturated desiccant bed
from top to bottom (2). The difference in humidity of the dry air and the wet desiccant will cause
the desiccant to release the moisture. The regeneration air flow will take the moisture out
through the silencers.
After regeneration, the blow-off valve is closed and the tower is re-pressurised back the system
pressure. After this step the tower is ready for adsorption.
Regeneration means energy consumption, so you want the purge loss to be minimal. For
dryers equipped with a dew point sensor the outlet air is constantly monitored. The dryer will
only switch if the outlet dew point has exceeded the pre-set dew point threshold. This results
in great energy savings, especially in partial load conditions, as purging happens on demand.

The Atlas Copco AD 330+-3000+ is a heated purge desiccant dryer

which removes moisture from compressed air by adsorption

Working principle
The AD dryer consists of two towers containing activated alumina. In one tower the activated alumina
beads adsorb the moisture from the air, when saturated the activated alumina is reactivated. After half
a cycle, the tower functions are reversed.
Wet compressed air flows upward through the desiccant which adsorbs the moisture from bottom to
top (1). Dry air leaves the tower via the outlet.
When the desiccant is saturated, it has to be dried or regenerated. The tower is depressurized and dry
compressed air is heated and blown through the saturated desiccant (2), via the nozzle (4) and heater
(5), forcing the adsorbed moisture out from top to bottom.
After the heating phase, the hot desiccant is cooled by expanding dry compressed air (purge) from the
outlet of the vessel, from top to bottom.
After regeneration, the tower is pressurised equal to the system pressure.
