Gender in Philippine Literature in English
Module 8

EXERCISE 1
1. Name one stereotype or former belief/concept that, for you, reading our modules has
shattered or changed. Identify the specific module and page where the discussion or
the text led to the shattering of that stereotype or belief in your mind.
 “BAKLA.” Despite the fact that I normally characterize bakla as a male with "feminine"
traits, dresses as a "sexy" woman, or identifies as a woman, my module 8, page 14
indicates otherwise. As far as I know, a male can have a girlfriend, dress and act
masculinely, and still be referred to as bisexual and not bakla. Bisexual, in my
understanding, refers to a man who appears or acts masculine but nevertheless falls in
love with another male.

2. Give a specific situation when you observed or personally experienced how gender
(gender, not sex) influences the way society responds to you.

 There's a diverse way on how individuals and groups understand, experience, and
express gender. Gender is one factor that influences our behavior and relationships. At
home, I also sometimes experience gender stereotyping. I loved making DIY projects. To
site some, I made my own bed, lampshade, clothes hanger rack, and study table.
Furnishing my own room through DIY can save me so much money. However, whenever
I do some DIY projects, my father would always say “You can’t do that.”, “It’s not like
that.”, “You’re doing it wrong.”, or “Just ask somebody else to do it.” And when I ask
him to buy some materials which I need, he would say that I am just wasting my money
and effort. My father is a carpenter, and he knows how hard it is to make those things.
He doesn't see that this is one of my passions and I am capable of doing it. Even if,
sometimes, creating those really requires physical strength and stamina. I can’t deny the
fact that making those are usually or mostly hard and are being generalized as a male or
men's work. The way my father sees my gender as a limitation on my skills should not
hinder me on doing what I believe I can do regardless of the gender I belong to.

3. Also, for Extra Credit (up to 5% points) --- add an ending (a denouement) for Gey Luv.
It has to be a credible (believable) ending, but one that is creative and consistent with
the text. You can’t suddenly invent twists that are not supported by textual evidence
 [59] But, does it matter?
loob akong kumatok ngunit wala siyang imik.
salitang “I love you, Mike”.
probinsya.
