GRADE 8 – SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS

Learning Competency:
solves problems involving systems of linear equations in two variables by (a) graphing; (b) substitution; (c)
elimination.

Concept
SOLVING SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS
The solution of a system of linear equation ax + by=c and dx + ey=f, where a, b, c, d, e and f are constants are the
set of ordered pair (x , y) that will satisfy the two equations or that will make both equations true.

B. SOLVING BY SUBSTITUTION
- express one variable in terms of the other variable of one of the linear equations of the system, then substitute the
acquired expression to the other linear equation.
-the acquired numerical value of x and y will be the solution (x, y)

For Example: Find the solution for the system of linear equation y = -2x + 10 and x + y = 5

y = -2x + 10 here it is already expressed in variable y in terms of x.

you will just substitute y of the second equation(x + y = 5) in terms of x

x + y = 5; y = -2x + 10
x + (-2x +10) = 5 substituted y using -2x + 10
x – 2x + 10 = 5 expand
x – 2x = 5 – 10 regroup using transposition
-x = -5 combine like terms
-1(-x = -5)-1 apply MPE to make variable x a positive
x=5

x + y = 5; x=5
5+y=5 substitute x using 5
y=5–5 transposition
y=0
now we have values for (x, y) x= 5 and y=0, so the solution is (5, 0)

ACTIVITY
I. Solve the following systems by Substitution. The acquired values of x and y (x, y) will be
the solution: SHOW THE SOLUTION
1. y = 2x – 10
y = 5x – 7

2. y = 3x – 5
-2x + y = 1

3. x + y= 17
4x - y = 8
