CONTENT STANDARDS:
The learner demonstrates an understanding of the underlying principles in the
preparation of carpentry tools and construction materials.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
The learner independently prepares carpentry tools and construction materials
based on industry standards.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
 Describe tools and materials used in carpentry.
 Prepare tools and materials for a task.
 Fill out forms in requesting for carpentry tools and materials as required
for a task.

1.1 IDENTIFY MATERIALS AND TOOLS FOR A TASK

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:


a. Name and enumerate the materials and tools used in carpentry;
b. Identify and describe the materials and tools used in carpentry;
c. Differentiate the materials and tools used in carpentry;
d. Classify the materials and tools used in carpentry; and
e. Fill out form in requesting appropriate tools for a specific job.

INTRODUCTION
Carpentry is the application of construction methods of using
building materials. It involves site clearing and layout, laying
foundations and installation roofing, windows and doors, framing, and
molding. Also, it involves constructing stairs, making cabinets, painting
and decorating.
Other related building trades are plumbing system, electrical
wiring, solar construction, heating and air-conditioning.

Let’s build up our knowledge and skills about carpentry as


we continue learning with regard to this learning module. Let’s
get started!

Carpentry involves the use of materials, tools and equipment which


are all essential in carrying out a certain task.

These are categorized according to their uses and functions:

A. COMMON MATERIALS

1. Lumber- it is a wooden board or


log that has been sawed and cut for
use.

2. Nails- are made of metals


that have been used for
fastening woods.

3.Plywood- it is a thin, cross


laminated sheet of woods that
have been used for house
ceilings, cabinets, tables,
drawers, chairs and the like.

4. Sand- fine, gritty, substance


found in the shore and desert.

5. Gravel- course aggregate.

6. Cement- a powdered substance


which when mixed with water acts as
binder of aggregate.

B. TOOLS

1. Boring tools
a. Auger bits- used to create holes in woods.
b. Drill bits- used to bore holes in metals, plastics or woods.
c. Expansive bits- used in drilling holes in the woods with various sizes.

2. Driving tools
a. Claw hammer- used in driving and pulling out nails.
b. Mallet- used in knocking pieces of woods together. It is also used to
drive dowels and chisels.
c. Screwdrivers- used in driving and loosening screws.

3. Edge cutting tools


a. Cabinet scraper- a rectangular piece of steel that is versatile. It can be
used for cleaning dirty workbench top, smoothing a panel, and leaving
behind surface free of tear out, among others.
b. Chisel- used in trimming and shaping woods.
c. Planes- used in obtaining soft and even surfaces.
d. Spoke shaves- diminutive planes which are commonly used shaping
curved surfaces.

4. Holding tools

a. Bar clamp- used in holding big boards and


frames when assembling metals, plastics and
woods.

b. Bench vises- used in holding in place the


materials and tools.

c. C-clamp- used to hold pieces of lumber


together while working.

5. Measuring tools

a. Caliper- used in transferring


measurements from the ruler to the
wood, metal or plastic.

b. Meter stick- larger ruler used to


measure large pieces of work.

c. Pull push rule- used to gauge


various shapes whether regular or
irregular.

d. Ruler- used to measure distance.

e. Try-square- used in squaring and


checking the squareness of the
adjacent surfaces.

6. Marking lining tools

a. Chalk line- used to set up lines on surfaces.

b. Compass- used to establish arcs and circles in


metal, plastic and wood.

c. Divider- used in laying out arc or circle on a


line.

d. Marking gauge- used in marking a line that is


parallel to the wood.

e. Pencil- used in making lines to indicate


where the cutting line is.

7. Testing tools

a. Plumb bob- used in testing the


perpendicular and horizontal surfaces.

b. Steel square- used in marking out the


output for squareness and angle
checking.

8. Tooth-cutting tools

a. Backsaw- used in cutting fine woods,


tendons in cabinetry and joinery,
dovetails and mitres.

b. Compass saw- used for cutting large


and small boards with irregular shape.

c. Coping saw- used for cutting small


boards with irregular shape.

d. Crosscut saw- used in cutting the


woods that are across the grain.

e. Dovetail saw- used to cut very fine joints.

f. Rip saw- used in cutting the wood following


its grain.

g. Turning saw- used to cut the curves in


lumber.

Have you seen a requisition slip before? Are you familiar with its purpose? By
lloking at the form below, can you expalin the use of it?

1. Requisition form is a written form that a person needs to fill ot abd submit to the
person in-charge. It is a request form that will be forwarded to the budget manager
who will decide whther the request made will be approved or not. Each company
company provides their own template of a requisition form.

Note: Each business has their own template of purchase requisition form.

The purpose of having purchase requisition form is to ensure that the money
used in buying the supplies are properly monitored and carefully controlled by the
management. This will also avoid any repitition in ordering supplies and will secure that
only necessary items will be ordered.

borrowing materials, tools and equipment.

It is important to have a borrower’s slip before a person hands over the materials
being borrowed. If in case, a person in-charge notices that there are missing items it
will immediately trace the person who borrowed the missing items. It will also help
even the management to monitor and secure their materials, tools and equipment.

The information that follows will teach you how to accomplish the form in order to
acquire materials:

Procedure:
1. State the name of the project and date when you requested for materials.
2. Fill in the classification of the project and its purpose.
3. Write the number of required materials.
4. List the unit of materials to be requisitioned.
5. Enumerate the materials with their description.
6. List the cost per unit and the total cost.
7. Write your name as requisitioner.
8. Secure the approval of authorities concerned.
9. Make sure to have a receving copy as a proof of your transaction with them.

A carpenter is a person whose expertise is to


perform construction works such as cutting and shaping
building materials. The word carpenter comes from the
French word “carpentier” which was derived from the
Latin word “carpentrius” which means “maker of
carriage.

In this field of work, it is necessary to know the


different tools and materials for an easiest and fastest
way of performing tasks.
