Write notes describing the concepts and information presented in this session.

Integers are the set of all whole numbers and their opposites.

The positive integers include all the whole numbers greater than 0. The negative integers include all the opposites of these whole numbers.

There is one exception, the whole number 0, which is neither positive nor negative.

The set of integers can be represented by a number line with 0 in the middle that increases in order from left to right and decreases in order from right to left.

A line continues on forever in opposite directions.

When writing positive integers, we have the option to include a positive sign (+) or not include a positive sign.

However, when we write negative integers, we must include the negative sign (-).

Zero is neither positive nor negative. It is referred to as the origin.

Phrases can sometimes be used to represent integers. You will need to look for the key word or words that tell you if the integer or phrase is representing a positive or negative.

Words like plus, more than, above, increase by, and so on are phrases that tell you the integer is positive.

Words like minus, take away, below, decrease by, and so on are phrases that tell you the integer is negative.

When you locate an integer on the number line, it is important to remember that the integer on the right is greater than the integer on the left.
The number that is farthest to the right is the greater number.

Opposites are pairs of integers that are equal distances from 0.

Locate -4 on the number line and click on it.

Count the number of spaces from -4 to 0.

Starting at 0, count four spaces to the right. Click on +4.

It is true that -4 and +4 are opposites because they are equal distances from 0.

The number line is a line labeled with the integers in increasing order from left to right.

A number line extends in both directions forever.

The positive integers include all the whole numbers greater than 0.

The negative integers include all the opposites of these whole numbers.

The number 0 is neither positive nor negative.
