A.4. Checking of Attendance

Student: There is no absent, Teacher.

To our class secretary, Mr. Salvador, Do we
have any absence today?

B. Review of the previous lesson. (Eliciting

Prior Knowledge)
Before we proceed to our next topic let’s review
first the Newton’s of Motion discussed by your
teacher in your previous grade.

Everybody please stand. Please push your chair

forward slightly.
(The students will push their chair)

In order to move your chair, what did you

exerted or what did you applied?
“Sir, we exerted force to the chair to move
it forward”.
Exactly! That is what Isaac Newton what to
explain in his first law of motion.

Who can still remember the first law of motion?

“Law of Inertia. An object at rest remains

at rest, and an object in motion remains in
motion at constant speed and in a straight

line unless acted on by an unbalanced

force”.
Very Good! An object that has mass will move
if there is an unbalanced force acting on it.

Alright!
How about the two remaining laws of motion?
“Law of acceleration and Law of
Interaction”.
Very Good!
It seems like you understand about motion in
your previous grade level because of that, give
yourselves 5 claps.

C. Establishing a purpose for the lesson.

C1. MOTIVATION

Before we proceed to our discussion

Let’s what a video clip from YouTube.! Please
watch carefully and after playing the video I
will asked you a questions.
Are you ready!
Yes, Teacher!

(The teacher will play the video)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=MEzeZ1aNtbA

are you familiar with the sport shown in the

video? “The sports are Hockey and Rugby”.
What happen to the players while playing the
sport?
“Some Players collides or hits other
players”.

Good observation! In the video some players

collided to other players unintentionally or
intentionally.

If you were given the opportunity to play these

sports, would you play?

(Student’s response)

C2. Presenting Examples/Instances of the

new lesson.
The video involves many sports collisions.
Now it’s your turn to do some activity that is
related to our topic for today.

Let’s do the “Egg Throwing Challenge”.

This challenge very simple. You will be going
to throw the egg in a sheet. Try to break the egg.

Are you ready to play the game?

“Yes Sir!”
I need to volunteer to hold the sheet vertically.
Before we start the challenge, please answer this
question.

What kinds of characteristics an egg holds?

“Breakable, it has a mass, and it doesn’t

have a velocity unless it’s moving”.
Predict what will happen if the egg is thrown into
the sheet.

(By a show of hands have the students vote who will

think the egg will break)

(The teacher will explain the mechanics of the

game)

D. Lesson Proper

● Calculate the value of unknown

variables (p, m, and v)

● Cite the important of momentum in

everyday life

Alright, Let’s proceed to our new lesson

Our lesson for today is about Momentum and
Impulse.
For instance, where did you usually heard the:
“momentum”

“In playing sport, you have the momentum.

“When someone interrupt the players, the
Very Good! Sometimes your teacher says” coach will say “nku mawawala sa
His/her momentum destroy when some students momentum yan”.
interrupt her/him during discussion.

So, what is the meaning of momentum to you?

“Strength or force gained by motion or by a

Brilliant Idea! series of events”.

In Physics: Momentum is a measurement of

mass in motion: how much mass is in how much
motion. It is usually given the symbol p.

Let’s go back to egg throwing challenge. We all

know that the has mass. Can you explain in
what part of the activity momentum exist?

“When the egg was thrown to the sheet, the

Very Good! Any object that is moving has egg had momentum”.
momentum even in the absence of gravity.

Momentum is a term used to describe a quantity

of motion.

In order to bring a moving object to rest such as

the egg or an athlete, you must change the
momentum to _______ what?

Department of Education
Region III

Excellent!

Momentum of an object is directly proportional “The momentum must turn to zero”.

to both its mass and velocity.

Who wants to explain this?

Simply stated, if a moving object has more

Very Good! Example the hockey or football mass, it has more momentum, and if an
player speeds up or has a large mass, they will object has more velocity, it has more
be more difficult to stop/bring to rest than a momentum, therefore if either the mass or
player with a smaller mass or velocity. velocity (or both) of an object increases.

If the mass and velocity is directly proportional

to momentum, what do you think is the formula
to calculate momentum?

Exactly! Mathematically, this is the formula to

calculate Momentum
Momentum (p) = Mass (m) x Velocity (v)

Let us answer this sample problem. “Momentum is equal to mass multiply by

the velocity of the moving object.

Sample Problem 1. Calculate the momentum of

a 12OOkg car with a velocity of 25m/s.
p = mv = 1200 X 25 = 30,000kg.m/s
Sample Problem 2. . What is the momentum of
a child and wagon if the total mass of the child
and wagon is 22kg and the velocity is 1.5m/s?
p = mv = 22 X 1.5 = 33kg.m/s

Sample problem 3. The parking brake on a

1200kg automobile has broken, and the vehicle
has reached a momentum of 7800kg.m/s. What
is the velocity of the vehicle?
V = p/m = 7800/1200 = 6.5m/s

Are there any questions so far?

If none, please answer the following problem
independently.

Problem 1: What is the momentum of a 1500

kg car going at highway speed of 28 m/s

“None Sir”

Problem 2. A bowling ball of 35.2kg, generates

218 kg.m/s units of momentum. What is the
velocity of the bowling ball?

We mention while ago the momentum can be

changed? In our egg throwing challenged, can p = m v
you explain how does the momentum of the egg p = 1500 kg × 28 m/s
changed.
p = 42,000 kg m/s

Brilliant Idea! 3rd law of motion by Isaac

Newton can explain this. Who can relate the 3rd
law of motion and the stopping of momentum of V = p/m = 218/35.2 = 6.2m/s
egg in our challenge?

The term that is used to describe or quantify the

effect of force acting over time to change the
momentum of an object is called IMPULSE.

Impulse is proportional to force and time. The momentum of the egg stopped when
hit the cloth.

• In the egg example – in order to stop the

egg, its momentum must be brought to zero. The
only way to do this is to apply an impulse
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
Region III
School Division of Bulacan

opposite to the eggs motion. With the wall, the

impulse is exerted over a very short period of
time resulting in a large destructive force acting
on the egg causing it to break. When throwing
the egg into the sheet the impulse is applied over
a longer period of time consequently decreasing
the applied force, the sheet acted as a cushion, (Student’s response)
which is why the egg did not break.

E. Generalization
What does momentum mean? “The quantity of motion of a moving body,
measured as a product of its mass and
velocity”.
Very Good!
What is the relationship of momentum to
the mass and velocity of an object?
“The mass and Velocity of an object is
Excellent!
directly proportional to its momentum”.
How momentum related to impulse?

Very Good!
Impulse is the force to needed to changed
momentum in a given amount of time.

F. Application
To apply what have you learned in our lesson.
please do this activity.
I will divide you into five groups. Please count 1-5.

Each group will be given a scenario about

momentum and they will explain it within the group
and to the class.
Sample Scenario.
If your group was in charge of designing the surface
of a new child’s playground what kind of material
would you use and why? Explain your answer by
using physics terms we talked about such as
momentum, impulse, velocity, mass, time and force.

“Sand or rubber instead of tar or concrete,

they will act more like a cushion,

increasing the duration/time of the impact

Each group will share their explanation in each by the child therefore minimizing the
scenario to the class guided by the teacher. amount of force of the impulse when a
child falls.
G. Valuing

Now class, do you have any question? None Teacher

Now, what is the importance of having momentum Some examples of momentum that are used in
in our daily life? everyday life: In a large truck, running on the
highway ( even with a small velocity ) has a
very high momentum because of its large
mass. An athlete running in a race with some
velocity has momentum. Because an athlete
running in the race is a mass in motion.

In sport, knowing momentum and impulse is very

important.
Gymnasts also do not land on the ground but on
specially designed soft and flexible pads that
prolong the time of breaking the fall to decrease
impact forces acting on gymnasts.
