CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, respondents of the study, data

gathering instrument, data gathering procedure and statistical treatment of data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study is a quantitative research. The descriptive method research

design will be used to determine the factors affecting the participation in activities

and asynchronous learning of STEM students in their Mathematics subjects in

online class platforms. Descriptive research describes the characteristics of the

population being studied which answers the question who, what, where, when

and how. Moreover, descriptive research is a fact-finding study with an adequate

interpretation of findings. It also describes with emphasis on what actually exists

such as current conditions or any situations being studied (Atmawardoyo, 2018).

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of the study are the STEM students of Urbiztondo

Integrated School in Urbiztondo, Pangasinan comprising of 51 Grade 11 and 49

Grade 12 STEM students. A total of 100 students will be the source of

information of the study which is entitled “Factors Affecting the Participation in

Activities and Asynchronous Learning of STEM Students in Online Class

Platforms”.
DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT

The researcher will use questionnaires in gathering the data to achieve

the main objective of the study. The questionnaire has two (2) parts. Part one

consists the profile of the respondents in terms of name which is optional to fill

out, sex, year level, monthly family income and grades in major subjects for the

school year 2021-2022. The respondents were instructed to fill out or put a check

mark on each corresponding variable. Part two of the questionnaire is the factors

that affect STEM students’ participation in activities and asynchronous learning

on their major subject in online class platforms. It contains eight (8) categories,

which include the timeliness of submission of activities, online class attendance,

scores in online quizzes, study habits of students, student motivation, learning

environment, accessibility to media and technology, and teacher’s attitude in

conducting activities. Each category contains five (5) close-ended questions in

which each statement will be answered by putting a check mark on the

corresponding scale of the 5-point Likert scale with an interpretation as never,

seldom, some of the time, most of the time, and always.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

In gathering the needed data, the researcher will ask permission to the

principal of Urbiztondo Integrated School by sending via online the prepared

request letter. The researcher will also communicate and cooperate with the

class mayor of each section of the STEM students. They will be informed that
they will be the respondents on the study about the factors affecting the

participation in activities and asynchronous learning in online class platforms.

The researcher will use Google forms in administering the survey questionnaires

and will be forwarded by the class mayor of each section.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The responses of the STEM students of Urbiztondo Integrated School to the

questionnaire will be statistically analyzed with the data requirements of the

study.

For the problem number one which was the profile of the respondents in

terms of sex, year level, monthly family income, grades in major subjects for S.Y.

2021-2022, it will be analyzed using frequency tally and percentage.

For problem number two, the following will be used:

A. 5 point Likert scale, allowing the respondents to assess themselves in the

given questions as they answer always, most of the time, some of the

time, seldom and never to a particular statement. The following shows the

arbitrary score, average weighted mean and the interpretation of the 5

point Likert scale that will be used in the study.

Arbitrary scores Average weighted mean Interpretation

5 4.21 – 5.00 Always

4 3.41 – 4.20 Most of the time

3 2.61 – 3.40 Some of the time

2 1.81 – 2.60 Seldom

1 1.00 – 1.80 Never

B. Average weighted mean will be used to determine the factors affecting the

participation in activities and asynchronous learning of STEM students in

online class platforms.

Where:

n= no. of respondents

N= no. of questions

x= Weighted mean

Weighted mean:

Average Weighted Mean:

For problem number three, Mann Whitney U test will be performed in

excel to determine the significant difference between the factors affecting the

participation in activities and asynchronous learning in online class platforms and

the sex of the respondents. Single factor ANOVA will be used to determine the

significant difference on the factors affecting the participation in activities and

asynchronous learning in online class platforms and the grade level, monthly

family income and grades in Mathematics subjects of the respondents.

For problem number four, the Chi-Square test will be used to determine

the significant relationship of the sex, year level, and monthly family income on
the factors affecting participation in activities and asynchronous learning of the

students in online class platforms, while Pearson r correlation will be used

between the grades in Mathematics subjects of the respondents and factors

affecting participation in activities and asynchronous learning of the students in

online class platforms.
