CHAPTER III

Research Design and Methodology

This chapter outlines the research design, the sampling plan, the instruments to be used

and the quantitative analysis to be performed.

Research Design

The study will use the descriptive-correlational method. This is descriptive because the

present study confines its investigation in describing the attitude and performance towards

Mathematics among Mathematics major students of St. Anthony’s College under the new normal

when taken as an entire group and when grouped according to sex and year level. This is

correlational study because it will establish the relationship between attitude and performance

towards Mathematics among Mathematics major students of St. Anthony’s College under the

new normal. According to Mertler (2014) the purpose of descriptive studies is to describe, and

interpret, the current status of individuals, settings, conditions, or events. The researcher is

simply studying the phenomenon of interest as it exists naturally; no attempt is made to

manipulate the individuals, conditions, or events. On the other hand, the purpose of correlational

studies is to discover, and then possibly measure relationships between two or more variables.

According to Arthur (2012) correlational research addresses questions about the relationship

between two or more variables, and the extent to which they co-vary.

Methods

Population and Sample

In this study, there is no sampling technique used. The respondents of the study is

identified based on the total population of 24 students of BSED Mathematics at St. Anthony’s

College, San Angel, San Jose, Antique from 1st year to 3rd year where in 7 are males and 17 are

females.

Instrumentation

The study will make use of a questionnaire which is the Mathematics Attitude Scale

Inventory. It was constructed and validated by Mr. Genesis Jordan MT III of Atabay Elementary

School, Brgy. Atabay, Tobias Fornier, Antique. The instrument is composed of 25 items, for

which 15 are positive and 10 are negative. It is constructed using a Likert-scale format with the

following anchors: 1 strongly disagree, 2 disagree, 3 neutral, 4 agree, and 5 strongly agree. The

Likert-scale is said to be easy to use and the most common when measuring attitudes (Eztrada,

Batanero, & Lancaster, 2011). This questionnaire would then categorise the respondents as

having a positive or negative attitude towards Mathematics. For the performance in

Mathematics, the researchers will utilize the general weight average of the respondents for the

first semester of AY 2020-2021.

Data Gathering Procedure

Initially, we will send a letter of approval to the Dean of the Liberal-arts Education

Department (LAED) to conduct the research to the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in
Mathematics from first year to third year. When the letter is approved, we will ask for the total

list including the official SAC email add of the Mathematics major students who are enrolled for

the academic year 2020 to 2021. Then, a letter of permission will be sent to the potential

respondents of this study through their email accounts. Right after their confirmation to be the

respondents, the questionnaire will be delivered in the form of GoogleDocs and send it to their

email accounts. The questionnaire will be answered by the respondents within the gap of

approximately one week. After a week allotted for the respondents to answer the questionnaire,

the data will be gathered for statistical analysis. With regards to the respondents’ general weight

average, a letter of permission will be sent to the Dean of the Liberal-Arts Education Department

(LAED). After the Dean approved the letter, we will transact at the school’s registrar in order to

obtain the respondents’ grades in Math courses.

Statistical Data Analysis

The statistical tools to be employed are the Mean, Frequency and Percentage, T-test,

One-way Annova and the Pearson-Product Correlation. For the descriptive analysis, the Mean,

Frequency and Percentage will be utilized. Meanwhile, the T-test, One-Way Annova and

Pearson-Product Correlation will be used for inferential statistics.

Going back to the statement of the problem, question 1 will be analysed using the Mean.

Question 2 will be analysed using the Frequency and Percentage. Questions 3 and 4 will be

analysed using T-test and One-way Annova. Question 5 will be analysed using only the Pearson-

Product Correlation. The levels of significance are all set at 0.05 alpha for two-tailed tests.

Statistical computation will be availed via the Microsoft excel software.
