Extended essay - Reflections on planning and progress form

Candidate: This form is to be completed by the candidate during the course and completion of their EE. This document
records reflections on your planning and progress, and the nature of your discussions with your supervisor. You must
undertake three formal reflection sessions with your supervisor: The first formal reflection session should focus on your initial
ideas and how you plan to undertake your research; the interim reflection session is once a significant amount of your
research has been completed, and the final session will be in the form of a viva voce once you have completed and handed
in your EE. This document acts as a record in supporting the authenticity of your work. The three reflections combined must
amount to no more than 500 words.

The completion of this form is a mandatory requirement of the EE for first assessment May 2018. It must be
submitted together with the completed EE for assessment under Criterion E.

Supervisor: You must have three reflection sessions with each candidate, one early on in the process, an interim meeting
and then the final viva voce. Other check-in sessions are permitted but do not need to be recorded on this sheet. After each
reflection session candidates must record their reflections and as the supervisor you must sign and date this form.

First reflection session

Candidate comments: My topic, which is the richness of butterfly species in bogota, is adequate for biology which is the subject I am
considering for my extended essay. I´m interested in this area because I´ve always been interested in butterflies and in nature in general, so
this is an interesting topic to me. It is important because butterflies are an integral part of the ecosystem and the state they are in is very
important
From my preliminary research the main question I got is: What is the richness of caterpillar species which turn into butterflies in different
areas of the bogota sabana, and how do they compare to each other?
Yes apart from the regular academic probity concerns, the well being of the organisms I study is important and of ethical concern.
In this area the focus to use for research is field studies to gather data.

Interim reflection
Candidate comments: The research question has gone through many changes since the first reflection, I´ve changed the scope, direction
and focus of the investigation to focus on the population density instead of the species richness of the place as I found it to be better
adapted to the space in which I want to carry out the sampling effort. Throughout the development of my EE i´ve found plenty of difficulties
throughout the process mainly dealing with time. However I´ve found that most of the difficulties are solvable through self-management
skills.
In regards to new knowledge I've acquired in the area, I have seen that the methods which are used for sampling, all bring their own edge to
them and are tailored to a certain angle.
I find myself having completed the pre-lab for my EE. During the meeting with my supervisor we set the dates for the sampling as October
19-21st and November 10th.

Final reflection - Viva voce

Candidate comments: My initial ideas were accurate to reality to some extent. I had to change some things but overall they were. The most
important part of the extended essay is in my opinion, the theoretical framework and previous investigation. Because if it is wrong or you
don't have it, then the whole process is much more difficult but if you do it well then the resulting work is going to be so much better and
easier, meaning that it is such a better experience if you do it and do it well. My research at the end was satisfactory. The research
process itself was, I really enjoyed looking for different sources and reading what they said about the topic. That was a really satisfactory
experience and it allowed me to write the extended essay which made it satisfactory both on a personal and academic level. However the
experimental part was kind of but not fully. I did get results and they made sense, but they were missing something unknown which would
have made them more exciting. So while the results were what I needed, they did not bring me satisfaction. They were satisfactory in the
context of the experiment but they were not personally satisfying.
