cooperation from our group members that consist of Amirah Humaira, Balqis, Siti Hafizatul
Nuur Ain, Nor Akmaliah, and Nurul Huda though at first there were some problems but we
managed to be responsible towards each part that leads to a complete report.

Other than those people, we would like to thank to friends for giving suggestions, opinions
and willingness to spend some time with us finishing the assignments together. They cheered our
days up to motivate us so that our assignments can be done on time.

This analytical report cannot be done with the help of our respondents by completing our
survey questionnaire. We are infinitely thanking to all our respondents for willingly spend their
time to answer and completing our survey questionnaire.

Not to forget to both of our parents that always giving us never-ending moral supports. When
being far away from family we do feel unmotivated sometimes and we thank our parents for their
motivations and wise words to push ourselves to finish this report.

Lastly, we would also like to extend our warmest gratitude to UiTM’s library for valuable

hard in order to complete this and we really hope that every information that we provide in this
report can be acceptable for the lecturer. Thank you.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report was commissioned to identify the level of awareness of child abuse among
students, to find out the factors leading to child abuse and the impact on children, parents and
society also to identify the solutions in preventing this case from increasing. We do the survey at
several places in UiTM which is the respondent’s colleges. We have found that most of the
students are not aware of this case whereas child abuse is a serious case that people must know to
prevent and take care of this group. So, we decide to find out the problem and give some
consciousness to our respondents.
1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

Child abuse or child maltreatment is physical, sexual, and psychological maltreatment or

neglect of a child or children, especially by a parent or a caregiver. Child abuse may include any
act or failure to act by a parent or a caregiver that results in actual or potential harm to a child
and can occur in a child's home, or in the organizations, schools or communities the child
interacts with.

The terms child abuse and child maltreatment are often used interchangeably, although
some researchers make a distinction between them, treating child maltreatment as an umbrella
term to cover neglect, exploitation, and trafficking.

Different jurisdictions have developed their own stance towards mandatory reporting,
different definitions of what constitutes child abuse for the purposes of removing children from
their families or for prosecuting a criminal charge.

1.1.1 History of Child Abuse

The whole of recorded history contains references to acts that can be described as child
abuse or child maltreatment, but professional inquiry into the topic is generally considered to
have begun in the 1960s. [1] The July 1962 publication of the paper "The Battered Child-
Syndrome" authored principally to pediatric psychiatrist C. Henry Kempe and published in The
Journal of the American Medical Association represents the moment that child maltreatment
entered mainstream awareness. Before the article's publication, injuries to children—even
repeated bone fractures—were not commonly recognized as the results of intentional trauma.
Instead, physicians often looked for undiagnosed bone diseases or accepted parents' accounts of
accidental mishaps such as falls or assaults by neighborhood bullies.

The study of child abuse and neglect emerged as an academic discipline in the early
1970s in the United States. Elisabeth Young-Bruehl maintains that despite the growing numbers
of child advocates and interest in protecting children which took place, the grouping of children
into "the abused" and the "non-abused" created an artificial distinction that narrowed the concept
of children's rights to simply protection from maltreatment, and blocked investigation of the
ways in which children are discriminated against in society generally. Another effect of the way
child abuse and neglect have been studied, according to Young-Bruehl, was to close off
consideration of how children themselves perceive maltreatment and the importance they place
on adults' attitudes toward them. Young-Bruehl writes that when the belief in children's inherent
inferiority to adults is present in society, all children suffer whether or not their treatment is
labeled as "abuse".

1.1 Purpose or Objective

1.2.1 To identify the level of awareness of child abuse among students.

1.2.2 To find out the factors leading to child abuse and the impact on children, parents

and society.

1.2.3 To identify the solutions in preventing this case from increase.

1.2 Scope

We do research for college students in UiTM Malacca Campus Alor Gajah and also from
another colleges. The respondent level we open for Pre-Diploma, Diploma, Degree, Master and
PhD to answer our questionnaire in 2 days only. The total respondents are about 155 students
that involve in this research.
1.3 Method of Investigation

The method of collecting data that we use is primary data which we are targeting the teenagers to
complete our questionnaire that are all in range of 18 to 30 years old and above.

Primary data is the method of creating questionnaire that needed to distribute to respondent for
them to complete it. Those survey answers helped a lot in this research that can give us the final
answer and achieving our objective in this report which is to identify the level of awareness of
child abuse among students, to find out the factors leading to child abuse and the impact on the
children, parents and society also to identify the solutions in preventing this cases from increase.

The questionnaire that we asked was about their concern towards child abuse cases and their
knowledge about this matter. Other than that, there were also questions about their opinion in
action that society will take to help victim of child abuse. From their responds, we also can
conclude that it remains important to remind the public that child abuse and neglect are serious
threats to a child’s healthy development and that overt violence toward children and a persistent
lack of attention to their care and supervision are unacceptable.

The questionnaire has been distributed to these teenagers for them to complete it in two days
which resulted in a total of 155 respondents.

As soon as they submit their responds, we analyzed it using a pie chart and bar graph to show
percentages and results of each applications that we put in those questionnaire based on their
answers.

The sample of the questionnaire can be found at the appendices.

1.5 Limitations

During this assessment, we have faced some of the problems because of Movement
Control Order (MCO) that happened during Covid-19 in this year. It takes a lot of time. We have
to wait until a few months but we still need to continue our study at home. We can’t discuss face-
to-face in a group. We have contacted each other by only using social media. However,
sometimes we could not discuss well since some of us had a poor internet connection and some
of our group members also being late to respond which make it difficult to talk about our
assessment.
2.0 BRIEF LITERATURE REVIEW

While most Malaysians are doing well, working from home, catching up on their favorite TV
shows while sipping on coffee, some people are having it worse when the Covid-19 pandemic
and ensuing Movement Control Order (MCO) is implemented. Under the watchful eyes of their
domestic abusers, there are who are living a nightmare with no escape, wives, husbands,
partners, and even children. (Tharanya Arumugam, 2020). The executive director of Pave,
specializes in tackling family violence, the increase in cases last year for 30 percent may not
necessarily be a bad thing. When we are clear about the need to report and when we have the
right tools children are protected because people do step up. Most importantly, professional help
comes into the family. (Dr Sudha Nair, 2018). It is helpful making the right people aware of what
is going on as they can act on a survivor’s behalf and get help from social services. Instead of
head-on, fight back in subtle ways because such confrontations often escalate abuse. She urge
and NGOs relevant government agencies to conduct quick interventions, encourage victims to
lodge reports, remove victims from offenders or vice-versa, monitor behaviours of abusive
family members, obtain interim protection orders, and be proactive in helping victims. (Dr
Geshina Ayu Mat Saat, 2020)

A psychologist and criminologist with Universiti Sains Malaysia said there are two types of
factors, general and specific that cause a spike in abusive behavior at home cases during these
difficult occasions. She stated, general factors include forced proximity, shortage of resources,
accessibility and recurrence of triggers, increased opportunities and lack of a capable guardian or
person to stop the maltreatment. Other than that are perpetrator traits for example, addictions,
levels of hostility, personal world-view, sense of entitlement, need for power and control, ego
levels. Helpless hopeless personality, dependent personality, provoking behaviors, low self-
esteem, self-sacrifice mentality and lack of support are victim traits. The range is diverse in
terms of specific factors and they are normally sourced from the perpetrator and victim. For
instance, in incest the predator has their own psychological twists and avocations. To accept or
allow the incest to occur some victims have been sexually groomed. Other family members are
aware and know about it but either ignore, participate or allow it to continue, in many cases. The
victims might suffer physical or emotional and psychological abuse. For causing the latter’s own
suffering and punishment perpetrators often blame victims and minimizing or justifying the
perpetrator’s role in the abuse at the same time in cases of physical or emotional abuse. A
perpetrator’s level of hostility, aggression, passive-aggressive anger, need for power and control
influence the frequency and depth of abuse in psychological abuse. Victims believe and accept
the abuse over time, to perform more emotional or psychological abuse whatever actions they do
become targets for the perpetrator to focus on. (Dr Geshina Ayu Mat Saat, 2020)

In Malaysia, child abused are not something common among the society. However, Malaysian
people are rarely care and decide not to intervene in taking preventive action against child abuse.
This kind of mindset and attitude need to be change to help the children to regain their rights. As
has been said by Sim and Choo, this frame of mind towards child maltreatment need to be
improved. He stated that the society must have knowledge about topic of childhood
development, childhood trauma, consequences of child maltreatment and children right to
prevent child abuse. In that case, the society will become more responsible for suppress child
abuse by reporting suspected child abuse case.

Malaysian citizen should understand the important of child abuse prevention. The government
should do documentaries about child maltreatment and information about the effect of child
maltreatment and risk awareness of disabled children can implant enough parenting skills in
society. In Krug et al opinion, those kind of media activities can inform families of their
important role in preventing child abuse. Krug also note that the characteristic of caregiver in
terms of demographic, psychological and behavioral characteristic and family environmental
variables are significantly related to child abuse. Thus, parenting skills helpful for children
growth development and character building and which is likely to reduce child abuse case.

Supportive environment should be built by the society. The child victim does not tell other
people about their experience or takes too long to report and the victim would be blamed by the
community for not reporting the incident immediately. The victim would be sexually assaulted
again as a consequence. ‘Strengthening Families Initiative’ can be implemented to prevent child
maltreatment as parents may build emotionally supportive network with their children’s friends,
their families and neighbor. Parents and children is likely to establish a healthier relationship.
McDonell et el stated that association participating supports those families with young children
to protect them from harm. As a Malaysian citizen, we can give support by motivated the victim
to report child abuse case to the authorities. As a matter of fact, building relationships with
neighbors is a productive way to suppress child abuse. (Jamhirah Abdullah, 2017)

With 14 cases reported each day according to statistics from the Welfare Department and
UNICEF Malaysia, child abuse continues to be a hot topic in this country yet it remains
unresolved. Child abuse cases are on the rise, we cannot take them lightly because we are
indirectly denying children’s right to be protected from harm or mistreatment. Key factors in
most child abuse cases are poverty and stress. Stricter laws and punishments are not enough,
caregivers need to better understand children’s needs. They likewise need preparing to perceive
indications of misuse, for example, unexplained wounds and cuts, breaks or consume marks,
bed-wetting and dozing issues, strange sexual conduct or discussions, social withdrawal, and
resistance. (Dr Aliza Ali, 2020)
3.0 FINDINGS/ ANALYSIS

From our analysis of questionnaire of 155 respondents, we know that 92.5% often heard
about child abuse in social media.

Figure 1. Respondent that have often heard about child abuse.

Figure 2. Gender of respondents.

The figure above shows the percentage of respondents that consists of 16.1% of male
respondents and 79% of female respondents that have cooperated to answer our questionnaire.

Figure 3. The types of child abuse that respondents know

Knowledge about this type of child abuse problem also, there is rarely a case about verbal
abuse. From the chart, we can conclude that sexual abuse is the highest rank which has 146
votes. The majority of the students know about sexual abuse more than other types of child abuse
listed.

While the lowest percentage of teenagers vote that verbal abuse type which has only 1
vote out of 155 respondents. This might probably because students are not given much
knowledge about these types of child abuse problem also, there is a rare case about verbal abuse.

Figure 4. Concern of lodge a police report if

there is a child abuse happen

The pie chart above shows that most

students say yes which are they will lodge a
police report to show their concern if there is a
child abuse case happening around them. It is
because the standard policies are to inform the
police to take their action first to avoid the other party to take their own action. The students also
maybe don’t know what to do if they face a situation like this. While students that respond no as
their action only had 3.2% votes. This showed that some people may have a different opinion
which does not want to take action by lodge a police report because they don’t want to involve in
those serious cases. They will probably think that they will have to be a witness to this case or
they do not want to get involved with the police.

Figure 5. Respondents Awareness that “talian

kasih” hotline is 15999.

Based on figure 5, there is 48.4% of

the respondent votes ‘no’ which means half of
155 respondents not aware that the “talian
kasih” hotline is 15999. The reason for these
responses maybe because they are less
knowledgeable about the existence of this hotline. While half of that which are 34.2% votes ‘yes’
as the answer. This may be because they are aware and always take note of child abuse in
society.

The remaining of the respondents which are 17.4% votes for ‘maybe’. This is because they may
have seen this hotline number somewhere in the social media or television that they a bit hesitant
either they aware of it or not.

From figure 5, we can see that most of the respondents are not aware that ‘talian kasih’ hotline is
15999.

Figure 6. Agreement that it is important for us to have general knowledge in child abuse.

From the graph bar above, 80 respondents strongly agree that it is important for us to
have general knowledge about child abuse. There is because with general knowledge that we
know, we can help other people surrounding by practice what we should do to help children who
face this situation such as we can keep the children away from their parents if it abuse come
from parents for a while and slow talk with them to know what the problem.

But some of the respondents strongly disagree with this statement which is less than 20
students. There are maybe because they think that there’s no need to know about this case in
their age and they never experience child abuse for the rest of their lives. That is why they think
that having general knowledge about child abuse is not important as they do not know how it
feels to have emotional, physical or any type of abuse.

Figure 7. Agreement that physicians and healthcare providers have very important roles
in this context.

From the graph bar above, 59 respondents strongly agree that physicians and healthcare
providers have very important roles in this context. This is because they should take important
roles such as early diagnosis and treatment of neglect and abuse. They also can raise awareness
to the families and societies as they are the professional.

There are some respondents that disagree with this statement. The reasons behind this
may be because they might think that physicians and healthcare providers are only responsible
for physical health problems. They also think that it is out of their job scope.

We can conclude that most of the respondents strongly agree that physicians and
healthcare providers have very important roles in this context.

Figure 8. Agreement that our knowledge regarding child abuse and neglect is still at
moderate level.

From the graph bar above, 63 respondents agree that our knowledge regarding child
abuse and neglect is still at a moderate level. This is because they might not follow the currents
issue so they are not exposed to child abuse. Next, the issue might be taboo to them as it is a
topic that rarely talks in society.
Seven respondents strongly disagree with the statement. They think that our knowledge is
not at a moderate level. To them, the society received exposure to child abuse from any platform
such as social media, newspaper, television, and more. They think that we are aware of child
abuse.

We can conclude that most of the respondents agree that our knowledge regarding child
abuse and neglect is still at a moderate level.

Figure 9. Agreement that serious damages can be avoided when child neglect and abuse.

From the graph bar above, 54 respondents agree that serious damages can be avoided
when child neglect and abuse, a very important child health problem, are diagnosed early. This is
because if we can detect the early sign of child abuse we can save the victim from the situation
which can get worse and affect their future. If the diagnose is early we can avoid such bad
problems for example depression, anxiety, and even worse, death.

Some respondents disagree with the statement. The respondents might take others' life for
granted. They might think that serious damages cannot be avoided even it is diagnosed early.

We can conclude that most respondents do think that serious damages can be avoided
when child neglect and abuse, a very important child health problem, is diagnosed early.

Figure 10. Main cause that lead to child abuse

From the chart above, 119 respondents vote poor parent-child relationship as the highest
main cause that leads to child abuse and it was followed by stress due to work as a second main
cause which has 110 votes from respondents. As a child, they assumed parents as their best
friend because parents always are there at the moment they need them most. If the relationship
between parent and child is poor, it will lead to an unacceptable effect which is child abuse. For
example, parents who married after divorce might have a stepchild and they will not treat them
as their child.

Other than the answers that we have provided, the respondents have their own opinion
about this case such as depression and anxiety, family and financial problem, being single for
long and lust, still young to become parents and house financial.

Based on the chart, we can conclude that there are many causes that can lead to child
abuse without reasonable ideas like a human’s logic. But the parents are the most responsible
person than other people as they are the person who raised their child when they were born.

Figure 11. The main reason parents abuse their child

From the votes before which are referring to parents as the main cause that leads to child
abuse, there are some reasons why parents abuse their child. Based on the bar chart above, the
respondents vote parents with psychiatric disturbance as the main reason which has 71.6% as a
higher vote compared to others.

Many respondents agree with this statement because parents with psychiatric disturbance
could abuse their child more because of their mental illness like a psychiatric disorder that
greatly disturbs their thinking, moods or behavior. They could not control their mind and could
do anything bad around them without thinking. Abuse their child is one of the symptoms. If their
parents have this kind of illness, they should go and see the doctor to cure their illness so that
things do not get worst, especially for the kids.

Other than that, the least votes received by the respondent is the mother’s young age with
27.1% of responses which is about 42 over 155 responses. Mother with their young age is too
young to manage their family life, especially when they are not ready to handle the kids. They do
not know how to take care of the child and that makes the kid was abuse by their own mother.
But, some mothers with young age know how to handle their family life and take good care of
her kids. That is the reason for some of the respondents did not agree on much about their
mother’s young age because they believe that a mother with her young age is ready to have her
own family.

Based on the graph, we can conclude that parents need good mental health so that the
children would not get abuse by their own parents. It would give much trouble to the kids in the
future.

From the first bar graph above, almost 60 students are agreed with the statement that no
matter what characteristics the child is or how they act, they are not responsible for being abuse
or neglect. This is because the students know that the children are innocent and they did not
know that their behavior nor their characteristic will expose them to child abuse. The students
also believe that adults are the one that responsible for abusing and neglecting the children since
they are able to think which is right and which is wrong. On the other hand, less than 10 students
vote for disagree toward this statement. This is because maybe some of them think that parents
who are abusing or neglecting their children because of the children's characteristics and
behavior are pushing their limits.

From the second bar graph above, also almost 60 students are agreed with the statement
that the abuser is by someone who knows the child and in over 80% of the case, parents are the
perpetrator. The reason why they agree with this statement is that parents are the person that
children close to. The children will not dare to tell other people that they have been abuse or
neglected by their own parents. While there are also less than 10 students that vote for
disagreeing. This because maybe some of them think that not only parents would abuse or
neglect their child. It could be their aunts or anyone that close to them.

From here we can decide that children's characteristics and behavior are not responsible
for being abuse and neglect. Other than that, parents are the most the perpetrator of child abuse
and neglect since they are the closer person to the child. So, the risk for the child to get abuse and
neglect are higher.

From the first bar graph above, there are more than 60 students agree that being a
nurturing parent could prevent child abuse. It is because by being a nurturing parent, students
think the parents will find out that it is wrong to do the child abuse and it is important to take
care of someone's life. While the lowest votes are less than 20 students, strongly disagree with
this opinion. It is because there is a thought by being a nurturing parent, the parents will
pampering their child which will make their child become stubborn and rebellious for not getting
what they wanted.
The second bar graph shows the highest amount of votes surpass 60 votes which strongly
agrees that they are willing to help the victim if the victim is someone that they know. This is
probably because they want to stop something horrible from keep happening to the victim
especially if the victim is someone close to them. However, there are the least amount of votes
which disagree to help the victim. They might be thinking that if they help the victim, they will
put the victim’s parent into jail or separate the victim from their family.

The third bar graph shows that there are more than 70 students agree to report the
suspect. The students possibly think that by reporting the irresponsible suspect, it will decrease
the chance of child abuse from happening again. Other than that, by arresting the suspect, it will
remind the people that child abuse is a type of crime. Despite that, there are minimum students
who disagree with that action. Apparently, the students did not want to deal with the police or the
authorities.

The fourth bar graph shows 60 students agree to become a volunteer at a local child abuse
prevention program. The students apparently want to gain new experience and learn how to
prevent child abuse if it is happening around them. Meanwhile, less than 20 students disagree to
become a volunteer for the program. Perhaps they are busy with assignments and have work to
solve other than joining this program.

In conclusion, the best way to overcome the child abuse case is to lodge a report to
apprehend the suspect who did the child abuse.
4.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Most of the respondents are female with 79% while 16.1% of the respondents are male.
The respondents' age between 18 years old until 30 years old above with 80% are from 18 until
20 years old, 12.9% are from 21 until 23 years old and 7.1% are from 24 until 30 years old
above. The majority of the respondents are Diploma level with 77.4%, 15.5% is from Degree
level and 7.1% are from Pre-Diploma, Master and PhD.

From the data we received, it confirms that students often heard this case through social
media. 92.5% of 155 respondents voted over this answer. Most of the students would lodge a
report to police if there is any case that happened around them. However, most of the
respondents are not aware that ‘talian kasih’ hotline is 15999. It is probably because they are less
knowledgeable about the existence of this hotline.

Sexual abuse is the highest rank among the child abuse case which have 146 votes. The
majority of the students know about sexual abuse more than other types of child abuse listed. 80
respondents strongly agree that it is significant for people to have general information about
child abuse. With general knowledge that we know, we can help other people surrounding by
practicing what we should do to help children who face this circumstance.

Other than that, most of the respondents which came from 63 voters agree that
our knowledge regarding child abuse and neglect is still at a moderate level. Nowadays people
might not follow the currents issue so they are not exposed to child abuse. So this case is a kind
of new to them.

119 of the 155 students believe that the main cause that leads child abuse is a
poor parent-child relationship and it is followed by stress due to work as a second main cause
which has 110 votes from the students. From the votes before which referred to parents as the
main cause that leads to child abuse, there are some reasons why parents abuse their child. The
respondent votes parents with psychiatric disturbance as the main reason which is 71.6%, the
highest votes compared to others.

There are more than 60 students agree that by being a nurturing parent could
forestall the child abuse. It is on the grounds that by being a nurturing parent, the student figured
the guardian will discover child abuse is a crime and it is critical to deal with somebody’s life.

In conclusion, child abuse and neglect have a long-lasting impact on the child, their
family and the following generations. In order to protect children from this circumstance, it is
necessary to develop preventive programs to enforce legal implications. Parents should take care
of their children with love because they are their family and they are the ones who will take of
them when they are getting old.
