Peanut Butter Lips Review

Peanut Butter lips was written by

Jamie Hooper, this short film was
created for a competition in which
Jamie came second. Peanut
Butter lips is a short film about a
young boy who wants a kiss from
a young girl. In exchange for the
kiss, he has to give the young girl
a sandwich which she likes.
However this is seen as difficult.
In the short film it is presented
that the young girl is picky about
the things that go on her sandwiches.

At the beginning of Peanut Butter lips, there is an extreme close up which slowly
fades to a big close up then an ordinary close up of the book the young girl is
reading, this book therefore gives the audience a hint and clue to what she likes on
her sandwiches as the book is called, ‘Peanut Butter Lips’. It also gives a zoom out
of the girl and her surroundings before showing the entrance of the young boy
coming to sit with her, this is using a wide shot because it is showing the
surroundings the girl is in. Once the young boy is sat they have a conversation about
how the young boy wants a kiss and the girl asks what is in it for her if she does.
This is then when he requests that in exchange for a kiss he will give her some of his
sandwich. In this scene there are reverse shots between the two characters. The boy
then questions her about what things she likes on her sandwiches and she allows
him to keep questioning the entirety of the way through the short film.

The following scene gives a close up of a hob whilst zooming out to show the
different foods he is trying to make for a filling on a sandwich in order for the girl to
kiss him in exchange. First he makes boiled eggs on a sandwich, in this shot it
shows a sped up version of the egg sandwich he makes with different transitions. He
tries to offer the egg sandwich to the girl but she turns him down. Therefore he
makes a variety of different sandwiches and offers them to the girl, but each
sandwich he makes, the girl turns each of them down with a disgusted face. With
each of the shots showing the different sandwiches in which the boy makes, an edit
is given in them which shows the fast forward of the process of all the sandwiches
and using a close up shot of each of them being made.

The young boy in this short film, Peanut Butter lips, makes a range of different
sandwiches for the young girl, with each of these sandwiches that are made the girl
shakes her head with disgust as she does not like them or want them. An idea then
pops into his head of the type of sandwich he should make for the girl. A zoom in
shot is used whilst he thinks and creates this idea from his past experiences with the
sandwiches that the girl didn't like.

This short film, Peanut Butter lips also uses mise en scene, this is shown throughout
the costumes that they use during recording. This is shown through the characters'
costumes as they were school uniforms, this reveals that they could possibly be in
highschool.

In my opinion, this short film could have possibly been better as through the short
film it gave us some clues to what would happen throughout. For example at the
beginning of the short film it began with a zoom out of the Peanut Butter Lips book in
which the girl was reading, giving us a slight hint to what her preferred and favourite
sandwich was before even continuing the film. Personally I would not choose to
watch this again as I think that it could've been more intriguing and interesting to the
audience. However the actual production I think was excellent with the different
types of shots that were used and editing skills that were edited into the film. I think
the camera shots and editing was the most interesting part of the short film. I would
only recommend this short film to someone if they were to be filming a short film
themselves and were looking for different editing and camera techniques they could
possibly use.
