Sports Flooring Options
We are often asked ‘why choose an area elastic sports floor over a point elastic sports floor system?’

We offer both and detail the principal differences between them.

Area Elastic Point Elastic Combined Elastic

Classification of Sports Floors
All area, combined and point elastic sports floors must meet the European Standard for Sports Floors – BS EN 14904.
In doing so they are further classified, based on their shock absorption and vertical deformation performance as A3
and A4 for area elastic floors, C3 and C4 for combined elastic floors or P1, P2 and P3 for point elastic floors.

Below is a table showing the shock absorption and vertical deformation characteristics that each type of floor system
must meet under the BS EN 14904 standard. Based on this table an A4 or C4 floor provides the highest performance.
All combined elastic floors however come at a premium in terms of cost whilst also having the limitations of a point
elastic surface.

Shock Absorption (%) Vertical Deformation (mm)

Area Combined Point Area Combined Point
Elastic (A) Elastic (C) Elastic (P) Elastic (A) Elastic (C) Elastic (P)

1 ≥25 <35 1 ≤2.0

2 ≥35 <45 2 ≤3.0

3 ≥40 <55 ≥45 <55 ≥45 3 ≥1.8 <3.5 ≥1.8 <5.0 ≤3.5

4 ≥55 <75 ≥55 <75 4 ≥2.3 <5.0 ≥2.3 <5.0

Shock absorption and vertical deformation are not the only characteristics of the BS EN 14904 standard, all floors
must also achieve a range of other criteria to gain classification.

We only offer floors that are Sport England compliant and meet the European Standard.

Sports Flooring Systems
We offer a range of area elastic and point elastic sports flooring systems which are Sport England compliant and meet
the European Standard.

Before choosing your flooring system there are a number of considerations:

• Sport specific floor or multi-sport?

• Community use – non-sport?
• Portable or retractable seating?
• Sports performance requirements?
• Equality Act compliance – wheelchair use?
• Maintenance budget?
• Indentation and surface protection?

In the table below we provide some guidance to help you consider which sports floor system is appropriate for your
requirements. Usually this is the start of the process that will help us to guide you through the range of options available.

Choice of Surface Finish

Your first choice may be whether to choose a timber or synthetic surface. Many people prefer the aesthetic
appearance of timber however associated with this choice are high life cycle costs.

Our Helsinki and Academy hardwood floors use an engineered board which gives enhanced performance and
dimensional stability provided by the nature of their construction when compared to a solid hardwood floor.

Our systems are available in a variety of wood species including:

European Oak Canadian Maple

We offer a range of high performance synthetic surface finishes. Each surface option has various features and benefits
which require detailed consideration to meet your specific needs.

Maintenance Services
As well as providing detailed care and maintenance instructions, we offer services to help preserve or rejuvenate your
sports floor including, scrub and reseal, sand and reseal and reline marking.

Good maintenance is not only vital to maintaining the performance of your floor but also to preserve your warranty.

Floor Protection
Floor protection should be considered to maintain your sports floors’ appearance and to prolong its life.

The most effective solution is carpet tiles which provide high levels of protection and also improve the acoustics.

The aesthetics of the hall will be enhanced, making the space far more functional for non-sport social events, as well as
during exams when desks and chairs are used in the hall.

Acoustic Protective Walls

In today’s high performance sports halls the next innovation is the protective wall. The area elastic wall is designed
to improve acoustics whilst also absorbing up to 60% of an impact. This significantly reduces the risk of injury to an
athlete. The systems can be installed on unplastered or uneven walls making installation quick and easy while also
reducing finishing costs.
