Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to diagnose and repair electronically controlled steering
systems. These systems include two-wire high and low speed (CAN-bus) and single wire low speed (LIN-bus)
networked circuits in the embedded network electronic control system of a vehicle or machinery. The systems
used vary based on the work context. The unit involves preparing for the task, sourcing a diagnostic testing
strategy, diagnosing the cause of the fault, carrying out the repair, performing post-repair testing, and
completing workplace processes and documentation.

The unit applies to those who work in the automotive service and repair industry. The electronically controlled
steering systems include those in agricultural machinery, heavy commercial vehicles, light vehicles,
motorcycles or mobile plant machinery.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Reasonable adjustment in VET is the term applied to modifying the learning environment or making changes
to the training delivered to assist a learner with a disability. A reasonable adjustment can be as simple as
changing classrooms to be closer to amenities or installing a particular type of software on a computer for a
person with vision impairment.

Why make a reasonable adjustment?

CMI make reasonable adjustments to make sure that learners with a disability have:

o The same learning opportunities as learners without a disability, and

o The same opportunity to perform and complete assessments as those without a disability.

Reasonable adjustment applied to participation in teaching, learning and assessment activities can include:

o Customising resources and assessment activities within the training package or accredited course
o Modifying the presentation medium. Using large print material.
o Learner support
o Use of assistive/adaptive technologies
o Making information accessible both before enrolment and during the course
o Monitoring the adjustments to ensure learners needs continue to be met
o Providing additional time for students to complete learning and assessment tasks.
o Presenting questions orally for students with literacy issues.
o Asking questions in a relevant work context.
o Presenting work instructions in diagrammatic or pictorial form instead of words and sentences.

All forms of reasonable adjustment must be documented in the assessment cover sheet and retained in
the student file.

Complaints and appeals:

Students dissatisfied with an assessment outcome may appeal the assessment decision. In the first instance,
students are encouraged to appeal informally by contacting the you and discussing the issue. If a student is
still dissatisfied, the student may appeal formally and in writing to have their result reviewed. For more
information, refer to CMI’s Assessment Policy and Complaints and Appeals Policy and Procedures.

Plagiarism, cheating and assessment dishonesty:

CMI considers plagiarism and cheating as a serious misdemeanour. Evidence of plagiarism and cheating are
treated on a case by case basis and the consequences for students engaging in such practices may include
being deemed Not Yet Satisfactory in the assessment or Not Yet Competent in the unit or exclusion from the
course.

Note: Referencing is a way of acknowledging the sources of information that a person uses to research your
assignments. References should be provided whenever someone else's words, ideas or research is used. One
