Student Signof
I have received, discussed and accept the outcome from my assessment as above for this unit
of competency and I am aware of my right to appeal.
This Candidate Assessment Tool has been designed for students undertaking face-to-face mode of study to
provide information before they undertake these assessments. It also contains assessment tools to assess
the skills and knowledge required from you to be deemed competent in this unit.
Please read all the information given to you when you receive this assessment booklet. If you do not
understand any part of this booklet, please inform your assessor.
PART 1: This part contains information on the assessment for this unit of competency and how an
assessment will be conducted throughout this unit to achieve the competency.
PART 2: This part contains the information to undertake the assessment task successfully.
Assessment Information
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to diagnose and repair electronically controlled steering
systems. These systems include two-wire high and low speed (CAN-bus) and single wire low speed (LIN-bus)
networked circuits in the embedded network electronic control system of a vehicle or machinery. The systems
used vary based on the work context. The unit involves preparing for the task, sourcing a diagnostic testing
strategy, diagnosing the cause of the fault, carrying out the repair, performing post-repair testing, and
completing workplace processes and documentation.
The unit applies to those who work in the automotive service and repair industry. The electronically controlled
steering systems include those in agricultural machinery, heavy commercial vehicles, light vehicles,
motorcycles or mobile plant machinery.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Students must demonstrate adequate skills and knowledge evidence by providing a satisfactory
outcome for each assessment task.
This assessment will be conducted at CMI’S campus and approved automotive training workshop.
Students will have access to suitable facilities, equipment and resources.
Clustering/holistic assessment:
There is no provision for clustering of assessments in this unit.
AQF Level
AQF levels and the AQF levels criteria are an indication of the relative complexity and/or depth of
achievement and the autonomy required to demonstrate that achievement.
All assessment tasks must ensure compliance with the requirements of AQF level and the AQF level criteria.

o information on ways of overcoming any identified gaps in competency revealed by the assessment
This unit is not graded and the student must complete and submit all requirements for the assessment task
for this unit of competency to be deemed competent.
Students will receive a 'satisfactorily completed' (S) or 'not yet satisfactorily completed (NS) result for each
individual unit assessment task.
Final unit result will be recorded as competency achieved/competent (C) or competency not yet achieved/not
yet competent (NYC). If you are being marked NYC (Not Yet Competent), your trainer/assessor will provide
advice on how you can improve skills/knowledge prior to their next attempt.
Assessment tasks:
To achieve competency in this unit, student must satisfactorily complete all the following assessment tasks
within the date and time specified by you. This will demonstrate that the student has all the required skills
and knowledge for this unit:
Knowledge Test
Skill Test
Re-assessment:
Skill Test
Students must satisfactorily complete all assessment assessmentsincluding practical training to be
Competent (C) in this unit. Students unsuccessful at achieving “Satisfactory” for any assessment at the first
attempt will be given two opportunities for reassessment. If the student is still deemed Not Yet Competent
(NYC) after two reassessments in a unit of competency, they will be required to repeat the unit as per the
scheduled delivery of the course. For further details, refer to Reassessment of competency Policy and
attendance andCourse Progress Policy.

ultrasonic position sensor self-parking system circuit, or
power steering motor control circuit, or
power steering hydraulic pump control circuit
in addition, you are required to carry out a diagnostic test in the course of the above for at least one of the
following faults:
Your trainer/assessor will advise you which fault you will be required to diagnose for this assessment task and
on which electronically controlled steering systems you are to make the diagnosis. The fault will be different
on each vehicle.
Determine the job requirements according to your customer and or supervisor’s instructions.
Access and interpret the technical procedures and information for the diagnosis and repair.
Analyse the diagnostic options and source your testing strategy to identify the cause of fault by using
workplace and manufacturer procedures.
Identify hazards associated with the work and manage risks.
Select and check tools, equipment, and materials for serviceability.
Inspect electronically controlled steering systems components for signs of damage.
Test the electrical control systems using the appropriate tools and fault-finding techniques in
accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and workplace procedures and without causing
damage to components or systems.
Compare the inspection and test results with the manufacturer’s specifications.
Identify faults from the test results and determine the causes of the faults.
Confirm and report fault according to workplace procedures.
Develop and report recommendations for repairs.
Find the information you need for the repair activities.
Collect the tools, equipment and materials you need for the repairs and check for serviceability.
Carry out the repairs according to workplace and manufacturer procedures and specifications. and
work, health and safety and environmental requirements.
Carry out post-repair testing according to workplace procedures to confirm fault rectification and
detect and rectify any further problems detected or introduced during the repair or fabrication
process.
Make final inspection to ensure work is to workplace expectations and present systems ready for use.
Clean the work area, dispose of waste and non-recyclable materials, and collect recycled material.
Check and store tools and equipment and identify, tag and isolate any faulty electrical equipment
according to workplace procedures.
Process workplace documentation according to workplace procedures
You need to read the supervisor’s instruction on the repair order underneath, discuss the tasks listed with
your supervisor for clarification and fill the vehicle’s details and other information on top of the repair order
before starting the work.
The Testing Strategy Template to outline the test strategy you are going to use.
The Diagnose Preparation template to outline the tests you are going to perform.
The Preliminary Inspection Report to record the outcomes of your testing.
The Repair Template which outlines how your repair work will be assessed.
The Post-Repair testing template to confirm the status of the instrument and warning systems, if a
final inspection has been completed, systems presented ready for use, tools checked and stored, and
all workplace documentation processed.
