Grade: IV Chapter 1 - Green Plants Subject: EVS I

I. New Words

CA CA HA

1 chlorophyll
2 leaf blade
3 photosynthesis
4 midrib
5 petiole
6 stipules
7 insectivorous plants
8 saprophytic plants
9 parasitic plants
10 leaf apex

II.Draw a detailed structure of a leaf and label it:

II Think and answer
Sometimes the leaf of a plant turns yellow and falls off. Why do you think this
happens?

Ans. When a plant does not receive enough sunlight, the production of chlorophyll
pigment in the leaf decreases. As a result, the leaf turns yellow and falls off.

III Short answer questions

1. Define stomata
Ans. Stomata are tiny openings on the underside of a leaf, which help the plant to
take in carbon-dioxide and release water vapour and oxygen.

2. Define food chain with an example.

Ans. A food chain is a series or a chain of organisms in which the organism is
dependent on the next as a source of food.

Fig – Food Chain

3. Define photosynthesis.
Ans. The process by which plants make their own food using chlorophyll, carbon
dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight is known as photosynthesis.

4. Which gas is released by plants during photosynthesis?

Ans. Oxygen gas is released by plants during photosynthesis.

5. What is an insectivorous/ carnivorous plant?

Ans. A carnivorous plant which traps and kills insects for food is called an
insectivorous / carnivorous plant.
6. What is a bread mould?
Ans. A bread mould is a fungus which grows on decaying bread.

IV Long answer questions

1. Describe the process of photosynthesis.

2. Explain interdependence amongst the plants and animals with the help of labelled
diagram.
a. Exchange of gases

b. Food

Ans. a. Interdependence for exchange of gases

i. Plants need carbon dioxide to prepare food while animals need oxygen to breathe.

ii. Animals exhale carbon dioxide which is used by plants and in return, plants release
oxygen which is inhaled by the animals.
Interdependence for food

i. Plants are the main producers of food.

ii. Humans and other animals eat plants and their parts. In some cases, they
eat other animals too. iii. The energy stored in the form of starch in
plants is transferred to animals when they eat plant food.
iv. Animals use this energy to work and grow and store a part of this energy in
their bodies.

3. What are saprophytic plants? Give two examples.

Ans. Plants that obtain nutrition from dead or decayed plants and animals are called
as saprophytic plants.

For example – Learner’s response

4. Draw a well labelled diagram of photosynthesis and answer the following:
Puzzle Time: Who am I?

a. I am a plant and I obtain nutrition from dead and decayed plants.

Ans: __________________________________________

b. I am the tiny opening on the underside of leaves and I help the plant.

Ans: __________________________________________

c. I am a kind of fungus and I grow on decaying bread.

Ans: __________________________________________
