Transmissions.
2 BASIC DESIGN
2.1 General
2.1.1 Pumps, auxiliaries and accessories shall be of a construction suitable for outdoor, unsheltered
installation, unless otherwise specified. The arrangement of the equipment, including piping and
auxiliaries, shall provide adequate clearance area for operation and maintenance.
2.1.2 Pumps shall be designed and constructed so as to run safely up to the trip speed and the
pressure and load that will be obtained at the relief valve set pressure and the accumulation. The
relief valve set pressures shall be 110 % of the pump rated discharge pressure or 0.049 MPa
above the pump discharge pressure, whichever is greater.
2.1.3 The following will be specified on the datasheets:
1. Capacity control range
2. Control method whether manually, pneumatic or electric
3. Control mechanism whether by stroke adjustment or speed variation
2.1.4 Crank case shall be designed so that any leakage of oil is prevented, and oil is drained thoroughly
from the casing through drain connection.
2.1.5 The parts under liquid pulsation shall be carefully designed and constructed against excess
forces and fatigue of the materials due to vibration. Vendor shall state maximum allowable
pulsation (peak-to-peak amplitude) if the pulsation at delivery side greatly affects the performance
of the pump or life of pump parts.
2.1.6 All exposed rotating parts shall be covered with non-sparking guards for personnel protection.
2.1.7 Vendor shall guarantee the pump performance, i.e. steady state accuracy, capacity, pressure and
Shaft power as specified on the datasheets. No negative tolerance is permitted on capacity at
rated speed and differential pressure. The steady state accuracy shall be within ±1% in the range
of 25 to 100% of the specified rated capacity
Tolerance on shaft power shall be follows:
Driver Driver Rating (kW) Tolerance (%)
19 and less +10
Motor 22 to 55 +6
75 and more +4
Turbine - +4
2.1.8 Unless otherwise specified, all pumps shall be so designed that the uninterrupted service period
of at least three years except for normal maintenance period of cylinder valves and/or packing.
2.1.9 All components shall have proven experience in similar duty to the specified one. No prototype
design and application shall be acceptable unless it is approved by Purchaser.
2.1.10 All electrical components shall be suitable for area classification specified on the datasheets.
2.2 Drivers and Gear Units
2.2.1 Motors shall have power rating at least equal to the following percentage of the Shaft power at
pump rated point including all power transmission losses.
Motor shall also be sized to cover the power requirement during operation at the relief valve set
pressure including accumulation.
2.2.2 Gear units shall have the power rating at least equal to the rated power of the driver. The gear
unit shall be designed in accordance with AGMA standard as a guide and with a minimum service
factor of 1.5.
2.3 Cylinders
2.3.1 The design pressure of the cylinder shall be not less than the relief valve set pressure.
2.3.2 Pumps which will operate at temperature above 0 °C up to 350 °C shall be designed for the
maximum anticipated operating temperature plus 15 °C. For the maximum operating temperature
of 350 °C and over, 20 °C shall be added for design. Pumps which will operate at temperatures
0 °C and below shall be designed for the minimum operating temperature.
2.3.3 Suction and discharge nozzles shall be provided with flanged connections unless otherwise
specified.
2.3.4 Flange rating and facings will be specified on the datasheets. Pressure ratings of suction and
discharge flanges may be different.
2.3.5 Cast iron flanges shall be flat faced.
2.4 Auxiliary Piping
2.4.1 Auxiliary piping system including all accessories shall be furnished fully assembled and installed
neatly on the pumps.
2.4.2 The piping shall be designed and arranged for easy disassembly and maintenance. Appropriate
flanges or union connections shall be so arranged that the pumps can be isolated with the stop
valves furnished for each service supply and return line and be disconnected from each service
network.
2.4.3 Auxiliary piping sizes shall be 3/8 inch minimum. Connection size shall be 1/2 inch minimum.
2.4.4 Piping sizes of 1-1/4, 2-1/2, 3-1/2, 7 and 9 inches shall not be used, unless otherwise specified.
2.4.5 Copper or its alloys shall not be used for any components of auxiliary piping without Purchaser’s
approval.
2.4.6 Sight flow indicators shall be furnished in each cooling water outlet line.
2.4.7 Cooling water inlet and outlet isolation valves shall be furnished.
2.5 Plungers
2.5.1 Material of plungers shall be specified on the datasheet, and compatible with the fluids they
contact at all specified temperatures.
2.5.2 Surface of plunger in contact with packing shall be hardened, ground, and polished.
2.6 Diaphragms
2.6.1 When pumping temperature is below -5oC or above 250 oC, diaphragms shall not be used.
2.6.2 Diaphragms of PTFE shall not be applied with the pumping liquid above 120 oC.
2.6.3 When double diaphragm is applied, diaphragm failure detector (pressure transmitter) shall be

provided.
2.7 Liquid end Stuffing Boxes
2.7.1 Liquid end stuffing boxes shall be constructed so as to facilitate the maintenance of gland
packing. Packing shall be removed from the stuffing box for shipping after shop test.
2.7.2 In case of multi-throw pumps, sealing or cooling water shall be separately adjustable for each
cylinder.
2.7.3 Water jackets shall be provided for cooling of stuffing boxes, if pumps are to operate at any of
the following conditions:
1. Pumping temperatures being 80 °C and higher
2. Handling liquids with vapor pressure greater than 0.098 MPa (abs) measured at pumping
temperature or at 40 °C
2.8 Heating or Cooling Jacket
2.8.1 Any required heating or cooling jackets for liquid ends, shall envelop liquid cylinders and stuffing
boxes, and preferably valve chambers.
2.8.2 Inlet and outlet nozzle of jackets shall be preferably flanged.
2.8.3 Heating and cooling jacket systems shall be designed to positively prevent internal or external
leakage. Passages shall not open into cylinder joints. The systems shall include provisions for
complete venting and drainage.
2.9 Cylinder Valves
2.9.1 Valves and seats shall be hardened and be readily accessible for maintenance.
2.9.2 Valves shall have renewable seats designed to be readily replaced.
2.9.3 Valve springs, if provided, shall have satisfactory strength for fatigue and corrosion.
2.10 Bearings and Crank Cases
2.10.1 In general, the bearings shall be of the ball or roller type. When journal type is used, shell or liner
shall be replaceable. The minimum calculated life of ball or roller bearings shall be 25,000 hours
with rated operating conditions or 16,000 hours at maximum axial or radial loads and rated speed.
2.10.2 Bearing lubrication system shall be selected for the service conditions and shall be capable of
continuous operation at any bearing with the temperature not exceeding 70 oC for forced
lubrication and not exceeding ambient temperature plus 40 oC for oil bath type.
