IGNITION - GENERAL - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________________

1. _______
General
(Ref. Fig. 001)
The ignition system consists of 2 independent systems : 2 high-energy
ignition exciters for which the energization is controlled by the ECU, 2
spark igniters, and 2 coaxial shielded ignition leads.
The purpose of the system is:
- to produce an electrical spark to ignite the fuel air/mixture in the
engine combustion chamber during the starting cycle on ground and in
flight,
- to provide continuous ignition (manual or automatic selection) during take
off, landing and operation in adverse weather conditions or EIU failed.
Each ignition system is alternately selected by the ECU for each starting
sequence in order to have no failure of an ignition channel for more than
one flight and to increase the overall system life.

___________

A. Ignition Exciters
The 2 ignition exciters are mounted on shock dampened brackets on the
outer surface of the fan case. Each exciter has an input connector and an
output connector.

B. Spark Igniters
The 2 spark igniters are mounted into bosses at the 4 and 8 oclock
positions on the outer surface of the combustion case. The inner tip

C. Ignition Leads
The ignition leads are constructed of insulated wire in a sealed flexible
conduit having a copper inner braid and a nickel outer braid. The leads
connect the spark igniters to the output connectors of the ignition
exciters. The aft ends of the leads, from the tube bundle junction box to
the spark igniters, are cooled by fan discharge air passing through the
lead conduit (the ignition system cooling is described in 75-27-00).

4. _________
Operation
(Ref. Fig. 003)
The ignition exciters operate with 115V(105-122V)-400Hz input. The power is
transformed, rectified and discharged in the form of capacitor discharge
pulses through the ignition leads to the spark igniters. Each engine circuit
is capable of independent operation and is selected by ENG/MASTER 1 (2)
control lever in the cockpit center pedestal.

ELECTRICAL POWER SUPPLY - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
___________________________________________________

1. Description
___________

R **ON A/C 007-012,

(Ref. Fig. 001)

The ignition system requires 115V, 400Hz from the electrical system via the
ECU. The ECU controls excitation of ignition exciters A and B.
The ignition exciters transform the 115V - 400Hz current into high voltage
pulsating current. This current charges internal capacitors. The stored
energy is approximately 5 to 8 joules. The discharge rate is of two per
second and the energy delivered is 2.0 joules.
Each engine has two independent ignition exciters
- upper exciter (IGN 1) and lower exciter (IGN 2).
- Upper exciter supplies the right spark igniter (A) while lower exciter
supplies the left spark igniter (B).
The two exciters for each energization are controlled by ECU and can be
operated independently (starting sequence on ground) or simultaneously
(continuous ignition). The ECU selects alternately each ignition system to
avoid dormant failure and premature wear of the sparks igniters.

R A. Ignition Exciters
R (Ref. Fig. 002)

R (1) General
R There are 2 ignition exciters which are mounted on the fan case with
R resilient shock mounts. The exciters provide starting and continuous
R duty ignition on demand. Each exciter is capable of independent
R operation and alternate use of ignition circuits is recommended.

R (2) Description
R The ignition exciter is a capacitor discharge type exciter requiring
R an input of 115V (108 to 122 volts AC) at 400Hz (380 to 420Hz). The
R output voltage is 15 to 20KV at the end of a 13 foot ignition lead. A
R tin plated aluminium housing encloses the exciter and the components
R of the exciter are secured mechanically or with silicone adhesive to
R the housing. The housing is hermetically sealed to ensure proper
R operation under varying environmental conditions.

R (3) Operation
R The ignition exciter consists of an input circuit (filter network and
R power transformer), rectifier circuit and storage capacitor circuit,
R and a discharge circuit. The alternating current input is rectified
R and stored in the capacitors. When the capacitors reach approximately
R 2850 volts each they discharge a combined voltage of approximately
R 5700 volts.
R The discharge process repeats at a rate depending on the charging
R time of the capacitors.

DISTRIBUTION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
________________________________________

1. ___________
Description
The ignition for each engine is carried out by means of one or both ignition
exciters which transform(s) the 115 V - 400 Hz power supply into high
voltage pulsating current.
The high voltage flows through the ignition lead (shielded and ventilated)
and delivers to the spark igniter the power required to initiate the fuel/
air mixture combustion by a series of sparks.

A. Ignition Leads
(Ref. Fig. 001, 002)
An ignition lead transmits electrical energy from an ignition exciter to
a spark igniter. Each lead consists of a 0.28 in. (7 mm) diameter
silicone insulated cable containing a No. 14 AWG nickel plated copper
stranded conductor. The 0.28 in. (7 mm) cable is housed within a flexible
conduit which features a nickel plated copper inner braid, a nickel-iron
convoluted conduit, and a nickel outer braid.
Fan discharge air is introduced into an enlarged diameter portion of each
ignition lead conduit for cooling of the silicone insulated cable and
igniter connection.

B. Spark Igniter
(Ref. Fig. 001, 002)

(1) General
There are 2 spark igniters in combustion case bosses at the 4 and 8
oclock position, aft looking forward, on the combustion case
assembly. The tip of the spark igniters extends through ferrules in
the outer liner into the combustion chamber. Each spark igniter is
connected by an ignition lead to an ignition exciter.
When charged by a high voltage from the ignition exciter, the spark
igniter provides an arc to ignite the fuel being injected into the
combustion chamber by the fuel nozzle assemblies.

(2) Operation
When the ignition exciter discharges the high voltage pulses through
the ignition lead to the spark igniter, electric arc pulses occur
between the center electrode and the outer electrode, and an ionized
discharge occurs. The hot ion discharge ignites the fuel injected by
the fuel nozzles. The electrical pulse discharges continue until
electrical supply to the ignition exciter is stopped.

SWITCHING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_____________________________________

1. _______
General
The ignition system is controlled by:
- the ECU
- the EIU
- ENG START panel 115VU (ENG/MASTER 1 control lever and ENG/MODE/CRANK/NORM/
IGN START selector switch),
- the overhead panel (selection of manual starting).

2. Description
___________

A. ENG Panel (115VU)

Engine start panel is located on the center pedestal in the cockpit
compartment.
It is composed of:

(1) ENG/MODE/CRANK/NORM/IGN START selector switch

It is common to both engine and can be placed in any of the three
position CRANK, NORM, and IGN START.

(a) CRANK position

In CRANK position no ignition system is supplied but an engine
dry motoring is possible.

(b) MODE/NORM position

This position is selected by the pilot at the end of starting
sequence.
In this position the FADEC can select continuous ignition under
some flight conditions (i.e. icing, EIU failure).

(c) IGN START position

This position is selected for:
- normal starting procedure (automatic),
- alternate starting procedure (manual),
- continuous ignition after starting sequence.

(2) Two ENG/MASTER control switches

There is a MASTER control switch for each engine.

(a) With the MASTER control switch in the OFF position:

- the HP fuel shut-off valve is closed,
- the engine is stopped,
This position of the MASTER control switch overrides any ECU
function.

EFF :

ALL 74-30-00

AAA

 C F M

 56

(b) The MASTER control switch in ON position enables:
- normal starting procedure (automatic),
- alternate starting procedure (manual),
- wet crank procedure,
- normal operation.

(3) Two annunciator FAULT legends

An amber annunciator FAULT legend dedicated to each engine is
supplied by the EIU when:
- a starting failure is detected in AUTO MODE,
- or a disagreement occurs between the HP fuel shut-off valve
position and the control.

(4) Two annunciator FIRE legends

A red annunciator legend dedicated to each engine is supplied by the
FDU (Fire Detection Unit) when a fire occurs.

B. ENG/MAN START Section of Panel 22VU

It is located on the overhead panel in the cockpit.
There are two pushbutton switches, one for each engine. Each pushbutton
switch serves for a manual starting procedure only.

IGNITION STARTING AND CONTINUOUS RELIGHT - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
____________________________________________________________________

1. ___________
Description
The ignition circuit is supplied with 115VAC - 400Hz.
The ignition circuit is energized via the ECU and EIU which control the
ignition of the spark igniters. A dormant failure of an ignition exciter is
not possible for more than one flight because:
- the two ignition systems are independent,
- the FADEC selects alternately ignition system A or B.

2. _________
Operation
(Ref. Fig. 001)

A. Automatic Start
The ENG start panel (115VU) initial configuration is:
- ENG/MODE/CRANK/NORM/IGN START selector switch in NORM position,
- both ENG/MASTER control switches in OFF position.
The engine is not running.

B. On ENG start panel (115VU)

(1) Place the selector switch in the IGN/START position: the engine page
appears
(Ref. Fig. 002)

(2) Place the MASTER 1(2) control switch in the ON position:

- the starter pneumatic valve opens,
- at N2 > 16 percent the ignition system is excited,
- at N2 > 20 percent the HP fuel SOV opens,
- at N2 > 50 percent the starter valve closes and the ignition stops.

(3) Place the selector switch in NORM position. The engine page
disappears.

(4) If you place the selector switch in: NORM position after engine 1
starting then in IGN/START position prior to starting : continuous
ignition is selected for engine 1.
For ground start, in case of failure of the automatic starter valve
actuation device: the ECU logic is compatible with a manual actuation
of the start valve without any additional signal.
In case of an ignition delay: the ECU operates automatically both
ignition exciters after an automatic dry motoring sequence and
provides information to the cockpit.
During automatic starting, the ECU provides engine limit protection
(N1, N2, EGT).

EFF :

ALL 74-31-00

Page 1
Feb 01/96

AAA

 C F M

 56

(5) Start Interruption
The interruption of automatic starting can be achieved if:

(a) You place the MASTER control switch back to OFF. This causes:
- the direct closure of the HP fuel SOV,
- the starter valve closure via the ECU,
- the ignition exciters deenergization.
When auto start is initiated (MASTER control switch to ON), even
if you place back the selector switch in NORM or CRANK position:
the start sequence is not interrupted.

(b) The ECU aborts the starting sequence in case of detected

incident:
- valve failure,
- HP fuel SOV failure,
- hot start,
- stall,
- overspeed,
- Engine fails to lightoff after continuous ignition is selected.

(6) The monitoring of an engine start is described in 73-20-00.

C. Alternative Start (Manual Start)

(1) On the ENG start panel (115VU):

- the selector switch is in NORM position,
- both MASTER control switches are in OFF position.
The engine is not running.

(2) ENG/MAN START pushbutton switch on the overhead panel is in OFF

position.

(a) On the overhead panel: select ENG/MAN START pushbutton switch to

ON.

(b) On the ENG start panel (115VU).

1
_ Place the selector switch in IGN/START position:
- the starter valve opens,
- the ENG page appears.
(Ref. Fig. 002)

2
_ Place the MASTER control switch in ON position at 20 percent
N2:
- ignition system 1(2) is excited and the HP fuel SOV opens,
- at N2 > 50 percent the starter valve closes and ignition
system 1(2) is no more excited.

3
_ Place the selector switch in NORM position:
- the ENG page disappears.

4
_ Place ENG/MAN START pushbutton switch in OFF position

NOTE : If you place the ENG/MODE/CRANK/NORM/IGN START selector

____
switch in: NORM position after engine 1 starting, then
in IGN/START position prior to engine 2 starting:
continuous ignition is automatically selected for
engine 1.
With the MASTER control switch in ON position or
ENG/MAN START pushbutton switch set to ON and the
selector switch in NORM position : there is not effect
on the corresponding engine (if it is not running).

(3) Alternative start interruption

You interrupt the alternative start if:
- you release the ENG/MAN START pushbutton switch with the MASTER
control switch in OFF position,
- you place the MASTER control switch back in OFF position if it was
to ON.

D. Continuous Ignition

(1) Manual selection

When engines are running on ground or in flight: place the
ENG/MODE/CRANK/NORM/IGN START selector switch in IGN START position.

(2) Automatic selection

For an in-flight restarting when:
- you select engine anti-ice (ECS data),
- the EIU fails (except during cranking),
- flameout is detected,
- ignition delay during start.
R During an automatic start, as soon as N2 is higher than 16 percent,
R the start must occur in the 15 to 20 seconds that follow (depending
R on the ambient temperature). If this time is greater and the ECU
R does not detect a difference of the EGT of at least 42 DEG.C, the
R ECU controls a dry motoring cycle followed by a selection of the
R continuous ignition.
