CONVERGING CHALLENGES OF A DECADE

In 2009, Sir John Beddington, Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK government, gave a warning speech at the
SDUK Conference highlighting the imminent risks to society from what he referred to as a “PERFECT
STORM”.

He described a trio of dangerous pressures from the growing demand for food, water, and energy that will be
placed on these finite resources, catalysed by a number of key factors such as climate change, rapid
urbanisation, increased wealth, and an increased reliance on biofuels.
He explained that by 2030:
◦ Global population will increase by 33 percent (from 6 billion to 8 billion);
◦ Demand for food will increase by 50 percent;
◦ Demand for energy will increase by 30 percent; and
◦ Demand for water will increase by 30 percent.
