Goal Setting Journal Reflection

For the last four years I have been pursuing two degrees from the University of

Lethbridge, one bachelor’s degree in English and one bachelor’s degree in English Language

Arts Education. The goal that I have set out for myself is to have completed these two degrees

before my 26th birthday with a grade point average of 3.8 or higher. To achieve this goal in the

desired timeframe, I will need to complete and pass six courses this upcoming summer with a

grade point average of 3.8. To complete these six courses, I must ensure that the courses that are

applicable to the completion of my degrees are offered this summer, and I must take time away

from work to complete these courses when they are offered. Taking time away from work means

that before May 1, 2023, I will need to have saved $10,000 in my high interest savings account

to ensure that I can provide for myself while I finish my schooling. Additionally, I will need to

complete and pass both my Professional Semester II and III practicum work teaching in schools

across Southern Alberta. To achieve the financial savings that I require, I will need to save close

to 30% of my remaining paycheques and budget appropriately to cut down on non-essential

items.

Another goal that I have set out to achieve is to live and work in Mexico for 3-5 years

before 2035. To achieve this goal, I must first become a certified teacher in Alberta before

applying for work at an accredited school in Mexico. I will also need to take Spanish classes at a

university or online to better prepare myself for the language barrier of working in another

country.

Three goals that I have already achieved include winning the Mac’s Midget AAA World

Invitational Tournament scholarship, traveling to Mexico, and being accepted into the Faculty of
Education at the University of Lethbridge. All three of these goals involved careful planning, a

strong ability to advocate for myself, and an attention to detail when provided with opportunities.

While I have many family members and friends who achieved goals that I feel are

admirable, one that comes to mind is my good friend Nick Tetz. After retiring from his hockey

career due to shoulder injuries, Nick decided to pivot his career path towards his passion of bull

riding. I find Nick’s ability to tolerate pain, and his dedication to his passion most admirable. I

am greatly impressed when I see that he has achieved the #2 ranking in the Professional Bull

Riding standings this year and I wish him all the success that is coming his way.
