of a 3 phase star-connected system with balanced load;
▪ To study the phase displacements in a 3 phase 3 wire, star-connected system
in positive sequence with balanced load;
▪ To study the relationship between lines and the phase voltages and currents
of a 3 phase, 4 wire star-connected system with unbalanced load;
▪ To study the relationship between lines and phase voltages and currents of a

▪ To study the relationship between lines and phase voltages and currents of a
3 phase delta-connected system with unbalanced load
Equipment/Components Required
Referring to Figure A1, the AC 3-phase 4-wire system is available from a star-
connected three phase power windings. To distinguish one phase from another,
each phase is color coded in R (red), Y (yellow) and B (blue) respectively.
Therefore, an AC power can be supplied to various loads as required by the
consumer, including
1-phase, 2-wire load with either of one phase and the neutral line;
3-phase, 3-wire load with three phases only;
3-phase, 4-wire load with three phases and the neutral together.

Fig. A5 and Fig. A6, the angle is determined by the phase impedance.
Power factor of the balanced load can be given by : p.f. = cos
If the 3-phase load is NOT balanced, this should be noted that the phase
displacement of the loading current are NOT equal to 120o.
1.5 Calculate the ratio of line voltage / phase voltages. Does it equal to 3 ?
Ratio, (VL / Vph)
VL12 / VL1O VL23 / VL2O VL31 / VL3O
2.1 Switch OFF the 3-phase supply source and connect Figure B2.1circuit;
2.2 Adjust the variable AC supply to 44V, measure the Unbalanced current;

2.3 Set the Load to balanced condition at 1.1K Ohm, record the current again;
2.4 Check by calculation to check Neutral current = SUM of three Line currents.
