Rationale

Coronavirus disease, also known as Covid-19, is an infectious respiratory disease caused

by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.1 Some of the signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, such as

fever, cough, shortness of breath, and other breathing difficulties. While in more severe cases,

the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even

death.2 Covid-19 was first discovered in December of 2019 in Wuhan, China and since this

disease is highly contagious, it quickly spread all over the world.3 And according to Tropical

Medicine and Health, on January 22, 2020, when the first suspected case in the Philippines was

investigated, and as of March 1, 2019, 633 suspected cases were reported.4 Due to this, the

Philippine Government implemented Safety Protocols such as enhanced community quarantine

(ECQ), and a total lockdown, all over the country. Which causes the temporary closing of

different business facilities, for instance, small enterprises, etc.

As a result of the pandemic, every industry in the Philippines has changed, bringing about

several radical changes in daily life. It had a negative impact, particularly on the poorest and

most vulnerable rural communities.5 Preventive measures of contagion were implanted by the

Department of Health, bringing about several radical changes in daily life, to lessen the spread of

the virus; wearing personal protective equipment such as face masks, face shields, and gloves,

frequently washing one’s hands, checking the body’s temperature, having at least 1-meter

distance from people are advised.6 According to Taylyn Washington-Harmon,

in order to slow down the spread of COVID-19, one must wear a mask. The masks reduce viral

transmission, prevent presymptomatic spread, prevent you and others from getting sick, and

finally, it is generally good hygiene for everyone to practice.7

The Pandemic affected many businesses, but some of those businesses started to survive

and flourish. One such pharmacy is Tellus Drugstore, located in Naic, Cavite. Tellus Drugstore,

as with local pharmacies, provides an extensive selection of branded and generic medications, as

well as a full line of healthcare and personal care products, including medical devices and basic

everyday necessities.

There are already two kinds of masks being used by the public: face masks or surgical

masks and respirators.8 These are the three (3) of the many brands of masks approved by the

FDA (Food and Drug Administration) Philippines in the Advisory No.2020-1181-A that will be

tested by the researchers. Indoplas Philippines Incorporated is the first and only Filipino-owned

company producing and supplying premium quality medical devices adhering to international

standards of manufacturing ingenuity, quality control, and production excellence.9 While Sure-

Guard face masks are produced by AMB HK Enterprises Incorporate. Lastly, the 3M face mask

was created by two 3M Scientists --- Walter Westberg and Patrick Carey. These face masks are

generally effective preventive measures against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. However,

businesses have been considering whether brand still matters in terms of how much a business

sells given that there are so many people looking for supplies in this

circumstance.

The research will focus on determining the sales of the three brands of face masks

available at Tellus Drug Store, such as Indoplas, Sure-Guard, and 3M Face Mask. The study is

essential since everyone is in the midst of a pandemic; having discussed this would certainly

benefit businesses of all sizes. Furthermore, it investigates whether a brand influences sales. This

study may raise awareness among not only distributors and manufacturers, but also consumers,

notably medical health facilitators, doctors, nurses, and others who are deciding whether or not

to purchase this specific face mask brand.

Questions or Problem Being Addressed

This study entitled: “Brandmatters: A Comparative Analysis of Sales Between Indoplas,

Sure-Guard and 3M Face Mask” aims to ascertain whether brands really matter in terms of sales

in the area of Naic, Cavite, particularly Tellus Drugstore.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the impact of branded and non-branded products on a store's ability to sell

merchandise?

2. How has branding intervened with the consumer’s purchasing decisions?

3. What are the significant differences between the average yearly sales of Indoplas,

Sure-Guard, and 3M Face Masks?

Goals/ Expected Outcomes/Hypotheses

It was hypothesized that:

1. H0: Branded and unbranded products have no impact on a store's

ability to sell goods.

2. H0: Branding doesn’t have any intervention on the consumer’s purchasing

decisions.

3. H0: There is no significant difference between the average yearly sales of

Indoplas, Sure-Guard, and 3M Face Masks.

Methodology/Procedure

The materials that will be used and the procedures that have been completed are covered

in this section. The study will be conducted in the area of Naic, Cavite, under the supervision of

Madame Emilie Torres and Sir Jeremiah Aniel, to check the credibility of the information that

had been utilized in the comparison analysis. The experimentation involves various processes,

such as: contacting Tellus Drugstore, preparing the survey questionnaires, determining the

sampling technique and sample size, distributing of Human Participant and Human Informed

Consent Form alongside the research questionnaires, gathering data and lastly, analyzing the

gathered data.

A. Materials and Equipment

The materials and tools that will be utilized throughout the entire research process are

mobile devices, software, Microsoft Offices such as Microsoft Word, and sales at the Tellus

Drugstore. A laptop will be used to create the survey questionnaires. Software and online tools,

specifically Google apps such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Drive, are going to be used as a way

to gather the data needed by the researchers.

B. General Procedures

1. Contacting Tellus Drugstore

The researchers will be contacting the owner of the Tellus Drugstore in San

Roque, Naic, Cavite to determine if they will allow the researchers to collect data from

their store. This data will include the brands of masks that are available as well as their

monthly sales which are needed in the analysis of research questions.

2. Preparation of Survey Questionnaires

The researchers will use laptops to generate a Google form with the formulated

survey questions. This questionnaire is developed to gather data on the consumer's views

about brand popularity. It focuses on the brand of a product, specifically surgical face

masks. The survey questions will be first validated by the student researchers' Practical

Research 2 adviser before distributing to the participants.

3. Sampling Technique and Sample Size

The study will use a random sampling technique to select the samples. It will be

conducted face-to-face, and the target population will be in the De La Salle Dr. Rodolfo

Poblete Memorial Hospital, Municipality of Maragondon, and the area around Tellus

Drugstore (Naic, Cavite).

Researchers estimated a sample size of sixty for the area around Tellus

Drugstore, twenty for the Municipality of Maragondon, and ten for the De La Salle Dr.

Rodolfo Poblete Memorial Hospital.

4. Distribution of Human Participants and Human Informed Consent Form

15

The informed consent form, which is a necessary element of the

Institutional Review Board (IRB) application, will be distributed to the target

respondents. Every participant in the study will be asked to sign these forms.

5. Distribution of Research Questionnaires

The ninety (90) target participants will receive the survey questionnaire. This

survey will be administered both online and Face-to-face; the link to the questionnaire is

provided by the researchers via software apps, such as Messenger and Gmail, and most of

the questionnaires are answered directly face-to-face with the researcher's assistance. The

target participants of this study had four (4) weeks to answer the questions provided in

the survey. The time that is to be required to answer the survey is about three (3) - five

(5) minutes and has low risks in the study.

6. Data Gathering and sales report collection for Tellus Drugstore

The survey will be conducted among the customers of Tellus Drug Store located

at San Roque, Naic, Cavite. Participants' answers to the survey questionnaires will then

be recorded in the Google Sheets to ensure organization and avoid data breaches

throughout the data collection process.

Risk and Safety

This study will be carried out with the assistance of consultants Ms. Emilie Torres and

Mr. Jeremiah Aniel, who will guide the researchers throughout the process. The consultants'

expertise and guidance are crucial in ensuring the validity and reliability of the study's findings.

They will ensure that both the researchers and participants would be safe from infection while

interacting with them. To reduce biases, the researchers will make sure that all participants will

be based on random sampling. The researchers' personal information is only used for contact

purposes to protect them from unnecessary relationships with the respondents. The information

has not been subjected to any filtering.

Data Analysis

This will be the phase wherein the researchers will use Microsoft Excel and the one-way

ANOVA test to gather and analyze the results of the survey on the brand preference of the

participants to determine which brand is more salient and test if the brand really matters as well

as the yearly sales record.

All information will be gathered and categorized based on their responses. It will then be

verified by researchers to make sure they are accurate and the results are valid. After verifying,

the researchers will use Microsoft Word to generate graphs to better understand the data. The

findings of the study will then be presented in a report format for further analysis and

dissemination.

Abstract

Still, on this day, the Philippines is experiencing Coronavirus cases. The government has imposed
lockdowns and health protocols that prevent people from catching the virus — this includes face masks.
Many face mask brands were created and known in the middle of the pandemic. This study aimed to
determine if brands matter in terms of sales of the three face mask brands the researchers have chosen.

The procedure done in this study were contacting the Tellus Drugstore owner/co-owner, determining the
sampling technique and size, preparing survey questionnaires, distributing the Human Informed Consent
Form with the research questionnaire, gathering data and sales report of Tellus Drugstore, and analyzing
the data.

71 respondents out of 90 respondents think that brand has an impact on a store’s ability to sell. From the
consumer’s perspective of brand recognition, 77 respondents have agreed that there is an impact on the
purchasing decision. Basing off of from the sales of Tellus Drugstore, it is shown that there is no
significant difference between the average monthly sales of the three brands.

Since most results all accepted the null hypothesis, the researchers conclude that in this study, the brand
does not matter when it comes to buying face masks.
