CHAPTER FOUR

Findings

4.1 Introduction

This chapter will outline the interview's main purpose, which was to learn

about the participants' viewpoints, experiences, and beliefs through an unstructured

interview. The following data analysis revealed the following themes regarding the

effectiveness of collaborative learning for student’s academic performance, the

benefits of this type of learning strategy, and the challenges that may arise with this

sort of learning approach. In addition, brief descriptions of the participants were

presented.

4.2 Participants

The study included a total of 20 students, all of whom were either 15 or 16

years old and from St. Lucy and St. Peter. The questionnaires were distributed

directly to the participants, who were given an amount of time to complete them.

After collecting the questionnaires, the researcher examined the responses of the

participants and recorded important information.

4.3 Effectiveness of Collaborative Learning on Students’ Academic

Performance

The majority of participants stated that collaborative learning has had a

significant impact on their academic performance. They like it because it helps them

develop and improve their critical thinking skills. The majority of them mentioned

that it allows them to discuss views and ideas with one another. They also stated

that it increased their confidence and enhanced their relationships with their

classmates and professors, which will lead to more productive learning

experiences.

However, certain students provided negative responses. They stated that

leaders usually do all of the work, and members receive credit even if they did not

contribute anything. They viewed collaborative learning as a disadvantage since

some of them prefer to do tasks individually rather than in groups.

4.4 How Effective It Is As a Learning Strategy

The majority of participants stated that collaborative learning is either an

effective or ineffective learning approach, depending on the individuals. It is

beneficial because it encourages students to stick together with their classmates or

groupmates to help each other and collaborate as a team. It strengthens their

leadership abilities and allows them to help others by sharing their knowledge. It

also enables them to work on challenging tasks that would be impossible for

anyone to achieve on their own.

4.5 Benefits of Collaborative Learning

In this section, almost all of them have the same responses. They stated that

collaborative learning can build their confidence, improve their skill; leadership

skills, improve learning outcomes, develop positive relationships with their

classmates, and is an excellent way to begin exploring beyond their comfort zone.

4.6 Challenges with this type of Learning Technique

The majority of participants responded that members will rely on the leader

and won't do their share. They stated that some members may rely only on the

leader and will make no contributions. They also stated that some people may have

difficulty engaging with others since they are uncomfortable or shy because they

are not used to interacting with others. There will also be misunderstandings

because they have different perspectives and ideas on a certain topic, which may

lead to an argument.
