¢£ÁAPÀ: 12.6.2023 ज ना जायते ज ुः सं ारात् ि ज उ ते Upanayana (Upa - Nayana, symbolically a third eye) means to take a person nearer to the God and open his eyes to the knowledge. It is a very important ritual generally performed at the age of 8 when the boy (VATU) enters into youth from the childhood. This thread ceremony is also called Brahmopadesha - to prepare the child to enter into the Vedic school starting 1st phase of the life of the VATU that is Brahmacharya one of the four ashram of human life the other three being Grihsata, Vaanaprastha and Sannyasa.
A sacred thread consisting of three strands representing JNANA (Knowledge),
KARMA (Action) and BHAKTI (Devotion) is put on the left shoulder of the VATU. The supreme Mantra called “Gayatri Mantra” is whispered by the father into the ears of the boy. The first abhivadanam is for mother. The boy introduces himself by his Rishi, Parampara, Gotra, Suthra and name. Trikal sandhyavandana is a mandatory ritual to be done 3 times a day. The boy should also practice strictly the rules of brhmacharya.
