TRANSISTOR AMPLIFIERS

1
CLASSIFICATION OF AMPLIFIERS
ACCORDING TO THE INPUT SIGNAL

Small-Signal Amplifiers are amplifier which handles small

input signal usually in the order of mA or uA.

Large-Signal Amplifiers amplifier which handle large input

a.c. signals (a few volts) are called large-signal amplifiers. The
large-signal amplifiers are designed to provide a large amount
of a.c. power output so that they can operate the output device
e.g. a speaker.

❑ Voltage Gain
❑ Overall Voltage Gain
Attenuation is the reduction in signal voltage as it passes through a circuit and
corresponds to a gain of less than 1

(attenuation)

As mentioned, CE amplifiers are rarely used to provide power
gain. However, for completeness, the overall power gain is the
product of the overall voltage gain and the overall current gain

Sample Problems
1. Determine the signal voltage at the base of the transistor in the
figure shown with 10 mV rms, 300 Ω signal source. Assume IE = 3.58
mA.

30
2. Select a minimum value for the emitter bypass capacitor, C2,
in figure shown if the amplifier must operate over a frequency
range from 200 Hz to 10 kHz.
3. For the circuit shown determine IE, r’e, Vb, Rin(base),
Rin(total), Rout, overall Av, overall Ai and Power gain
