Student presenters will use their visual aid and summarize their topic in between 4-5 minutes.
Teachers will ask the students 3 scripted and between 2-3 unscripted questions using 3-4
minutes
Students in the audience will have an opportunity to ask the student presenter questions,
between 2-3 minutes
All students in the audience will have a question sheet to complete, and are responsible to ask a
single question of one of the 4-5 panelists.
Presentation Expectations
Students who are in the audience are expected to act professionally in every way during their
peers presentations, this includes
-Asking relevant and professional questions when students have the opportunity
Electronic devices: Students should not be on their phone during presentations. If a student is
on their phone they will receive a zero for their audience grade in their class. Feel free to collect
phones at the beginning of the presentation, have students turn them off, or whatever else
works for you while you are evaluating the presentations.
Laptops: Unless a student has a laptop as an accommodation under their ILP, they will not be
permitted for use by the audience during presentations. Students will be provided with paper
versions of their audience worksheet.
For students who are presenting, after and before their presentation their laptop should remain
closed to prevent any distractions.
Use of laptops for non symposium related activities will result in a zero for audience worksheet
grades.
Scripted Questions to Students
1. What is the major argument of your paper? What were three new or surprising facts you
learned about your topic in the process of writing this paper? How did these facts impact your
paper's thesis and main argument?
2. What are three pieces of advice you would give students if they wished to research your
topic further? If you had a chance to do more research on your topic, what parts of your paper
would you want to know more about?
3. Why is the research you conducted important? Why is it important that students today have
an understanding of the research you conducted?
Please use your discretion to use non scripted questions to allow students to expand or dive
deeper into topics they are strong talking about during the scripted questions. Non scripted
questions are there for the students to show their knowledge and assess their ability to talk
about their topic.
Answers to non scripted questions may be more scattered or unpolished than the answers to
the scripted questions, and that is alright. The key here is whether or not the student shows
some ability to respond to those questions based on their research.
