Hydraulic Machines - HYMMIB2 Test 1 29 August 2022 (08:00 – 10:30)

QUESTION 1

A 100 m length of smooth horizontal pipe is attached to a large reservoir for irrigation purposes in a farm in
Mpumalanga, South Africa. A pump is attached to the end of the pipe to pump water at 20°C into the reservoir
at a volume flow rate of 0.01 m3/s. What pressure must the pump produce at the pipe to generate this flow
rate? The inside diameter of the smooth pipe is 75 mm.

Note: Consider the minor losses due to pipe exit and use the Moody Chart for the friction factor.

QUESTION 2

A vented oil tanker is to be filled with fuel oil with density of 920 kg/m3 and dynamic viscosity of 0.045
kg/m.s from an underground reservoir using a 30 m long, 40 mm diameter cast iron pipe with a slightly
rounded entrance and two 90° smooth bends. The elevation difference between the oil level in the reservoir
and the top of the tanker where the pipe is discharged is 5 m. The capacity of the tanker is 18 m3 and the
filling time is 30 minutes. Taking the kinetic energy correction factor at the hose discharge to be 1.05 and
assuming an overall pump efficiency of 85 percent, suggest the required power input to the pump.

Note: Use only Moody Chart for the Darcy friction factor (ƒ)

QUESTION 3

The residences of Ramaphosa Informal Settlement in the East of Johannesburg are experiencing water
shortages due to a burst water supply pipe. The Ekurhuleni municipality have decided to distribute 2.4 m
diameter tanks which are filled up to 4 m above the centre of a sharp-edged 10 cm diameter orifice. To
facilitate planning, the municipality would like to establish how long will it take to drain one tank and if loss
coefficient of the orifice would cause any significant increase in the draining time of each tank?
Hint: The loss coefficient of the orifice is equivalent to that of the sharp-edge pipe inlet
