A. Reviewing Previous
about?
Lesson or Presenting
New Lesson Third Law of Thermodynamics
Yes John?
Ma’am.
Very good! The Third Law of
What is Third Law of Thermodynamics is concerned
Thermodynamics? with the limiting behavior of
systems as the temperature
approaches absolute zero.

Excellent!

Who was first formulated the

Third Law of Walther Nernst. Ma’am
Thermodynamics?

Bravo!

Since you are already fully

understand the last topic, let’s
proceed to our lesson.

B. Establishing a 1. Engage
purpose for the lesson
(Motivation) Activity 1: Story Time

This time I will tell you a

short story entitled “Hot
Coffee”. Listen carefully
because I will be asking you a
questions.

In a shivering winter season,

if your mom prepares a nice
hot coffee for you and you do
not drink it within few
minutes, then what happens?
It becomes cold.
It will cool down. Right !!
Why does hot coffee become
cold if you do not drink it It is because of the temperature
within a few minutes? Ma’am.

the hot coffee is surrounded

by the cold air of the room.
This hot coffee loses its heat
to the surrounding air of the
room.

Hot coffee will keep on losing

the heat until its temperature
becomes equal to the
temperature of the
surrounding air of the room.

Let say the surrounding

temperature is 25 °C and the
temperature of hot coffee is 70
°C. Then coffee will lose its
heat until its temperature
reaches 25 °C. (In other
words, coffee will lose heat
until it achieve thermal
equilibrium with the
surrounding).

Class, based on the story and

the questions that I presented
earlier, what do you think is
our lesson for today?
Zeroth Law of
Thermodynamics Ma’am.
Amazing!

Thus, the zeroth law of

thermodynamics appears here
in this example of a hot coffee
cup.

C. Presenting example/ This morning our topic will be At the end of the session,
instances of the new Zeroth Law. students will be able to:
lesson a) State the Zeroth Law of
Everyone can you please read thermodynamics.
the objectives b) Describe the Thermal
Equilibrium of Zeroth Law of
Thermodynamics
c) Give an illustrative example
of Zeroth Law.
The Zeroth Law of
Thermodynamics states that if
two bodies are each in thermal
equilibrium with some third
body, then they are also in
equilibrium with each other.
This basically explains that if
objects A and B are each in
thermal equilibrium with
object C, then A and B are in
thermal equilibrium with each
other.

This says in essence that the

three bodies are all the same
temperature. James Clerk
Maxwell put this perhaps
more simply when he said,
“All heat is of the same kind.”
What is most important is that
the zeroth law establishes that
temperature is a fundamental
and measurable property of
matter.
D) Discussing new 2. Explore
concepts and practicing
new skills Activity 2: Virtual scavenger
hunts

This time we will play a

remote games where players
scramble to find items or
choose one item list in the box
before time runs out,
afterwards I will choose a
students to explain how those
items describe to zeroth law of
thermodynamics.
Is that clear?
Yes, ma’am
Your time starts now.
(Students will find the items at
home)
Times up! Hold the items you
choose from the box.

What the item you choose in

the list? Gizza? I choose the ice Ma’am
Okay how would you describe
that in Zeroth Law of I put the ice in hot room after
Thermodynamics? some time the ice will melt.

Explain why?
It is because the hot room and
ice cube are in thermal
Another items, what things equilibrium with each other.
you pick, Helen Joy?
I pick thermometer Ma’am

Explain how can thermometer

connect to the Zeroth Law of when the thermometer comes in
Thermodynamics? contact with a hot body that a
person having fever, it’s
Very good. temperature rises.
E) Developing Mastery 3. Explain

Lets proceed to
Thermodynamic System.

Who among you have an idea

about thermodynamic system?
Ma’am
Yes Jessable
It refers to a system that can
interact with the environment
by exchanging energy by means
of heat transfer and mechanical
Very good! works.
We use cars and bikes in our
daily routine to travel. To
keep them going, we fill in
petrol or diesel as per the
design of the vehicle. The
petrol or diesel in the vehicle
undergoes combustion inside
the engine and is an ideal
example of a thermodynamic
system. The system which
involves the processing of
heat and converting it to
useful work involves
thermodynamic processes.
Nuclear power, electronic heat
sink and rocket launch involve
thermodynamics.

Thermodynamic systems are

classified as :

Open system
Closed system
Isolated System

Open System
If the thermodynamic system
has the capacity to exchange
both matter and energy with
its surroundings, it is said to
be an open system.

Closed System
A system which has the ability
to exchange only energy with
its surroundings and cannot
exchange matter, it is known
as a closed system.

Isolated System
A system which cannot
exchange the matter or energy
with the surroundings, is
known as an isolated system.
The Zeroth law of
thermodynamics states that
thermodynamic processes do
not affect the total energy of
the system.

This time I will group you

into 3 groups, each group
should answer the given
questions assigned. Group 1

please choose 2 members to 1. Consider a beaker in the
present your answer as well as presence of reactants in an open
to the group 2 and 3. beaker. Here the boundary is an
imaginary surface enclosing the
beaker and reactants.
2. A steam turbine, a pool
filled with water, where the
water can enter or leave the
pool.
Very good group 1. Another
example of an open system is
a pool filled with water. The
water can enter or leave it. A
wind heating and cooling
system can heat it.
Group 2 presenting
1. Reactants placed in a closed
Group 2 proceed. vessel made of materials like
steel, copper, and silver are an
ideal example of a closed
system, since the material of the
vessel is conducting in nature.
2. A cylinder in which the valve
is closed is an example of a
closed system. When the
cylinder is heated or cooled, it
does not lose its mass.
Very good, group 2.

Another example is a cylinder

kept closed by a valve. The
cylinder can be heated or
cooled; however, it does not
lose mass. At the same time,
the cylinder itself behaves like
an open system if we open the
valve.
Group 3 presenting.
1. Reactants present in a
thermos flask or an insulated
vessel, where neither energy nor
the matter is exchanged with the
environment.
2. If the piston and cylinder
arrangement in which the fluid
like air or gas is being
compressed or expanded is
insulated, it becomes an isolated
system.
Very good! Group 3.
F) Finding Practical 4. Elaboration
Application of the
Concepts Class gives some real-life
examples of zeroth law of
thermodynamics, that we
experience in daily lives.
A Hot coffee becomes cold
after some time.

Okay very good! Another

example. Temperature measurement in
air conditioners.

Correct!

You have another idea Ria? Yes, ma’am. Thermometer for

measuring body temperature.

how? Because, there is mercury inside

the glass tube of a thermometer.
Now when the thermometer
comes in contact with a hot
body (a person having fever),
its temperature rises.
G) Making Okay class did you understand
Generalization and our topic for today? Yes ma’am
abstraction about the
lesson

Again, what is zeroth law?

The Zeroth Law of
Thermodynamics states that if
two bodies are each in thermal
equilibrium with some third
body, then they are also in
equilibrium with each other.

And what is thermal

equilibrium? Heat is the flow of energy from
a high temperature to a low
temperature.
Very good!
