LT1a: Algebra 1 Review- Properties of Linear Functions Day 1

Objective: I will evaluate my understanding of the Properties of Linear Functions by completing

my ALEKS Learning Objecive practice assignment.

Instructions: In your group use the Examples on the next page to complete the questions
below and answer. Classwork/Homework: Complete the ALEKS assignment LT1a - Part 1

Graphing a line given its x- and y-intercepts and Finding intercepts

of a nonlinear function given its graph
How do you determine the x-intercept?
The x-intercept is where the graph of a function touches the x-axis. To figure it out, you make
the y-value (the up-and-down value) zero and solve for the x-value (the left-and-right value).
How do you determine the y-intercept?
The y-intercept is where the graph of a function touches the y-axis. To find it, you set the x-
value to zero and find the corresponding y-value.
Finding where a function is increasing, decreasing, or constant given
the graph: Interval notation
What does it mean for a function to be increasing?

A function goes up if its values get bigger as you move to the right on the graph. Imagine
walking along the graph from the left to the right, and if you keep looking up, the values are
What does it mean for a function to be decreasing?
Aincreasing.
function is decreasing if its values are getting smaller as the input (x) increases. This
means that as you move from left to right along the graph, the y-values are getting smaller.
What does it mean for a function to have a constant rate?
A function has a constant rate if the change in the y-values is consistent for every unit
change in the x-values. This results in a straight-line graph.
How do you write interval notation?
Interval notation is a way to express intervals of numbers. It's written as (start, end), where
the interval includes all the numbers from the start to the end, including the endpoints if

narrative: Advanced
1) Read and understand the story
2) Identify if a situation starts at 0 or a positive value
3) Determine if the situation is increasing or decreasing as time
passes
4) Determine if there are any changes in rate during the story
5) Match the above information to a graph

a) A sight-seeing ship is stopped in the water for an hour, miles from the shore. Then the
captain heads the ship back to the shore at a constant rate. The ship docks at shore for
awhile, then returns to the open sea.

b) Boris is working out by riding his bike. He starts by biking slowly at a constant rate. Then he
gradually picks up speed until he reaches his peak. He maintains this peak speed for the rest
of the workout.
