ESSAY WRITING (15%)

(1) DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT

This is a PAIRWORK assignment. For this assignment, you are going to write an
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY using either the Toulmin model or the Rogerian model. An
argumentative essay requires you to provide arguments for differing sides using facts and
logical arguments. Below are the details of the assignment:

1.1 Choosing an essay title

1.1.1 You can come up with your own essay title according to one of the theme below, of
course you will need the approval of your lecturer:

Education
Science & Technology
Sports & Entertainment
Environment
History

1.1.2 If you are not able to come up with a topic, a set of topics will be released in Week
4 for you to choose from. Some examples of argumentative essay topics:

Public schools are better than private schools.

Voting should be mandatory for all citizens.
Healthcare should be universal

1.2 Writing the essay

1.2.1 As it is an argumentative essay, you will need to write it NOT according to your
opinion but based on sound evidence. Therefore, you need to conduct a
RESEARCH to obtain your points.

1.2.2 The essay will be written according to the process of writing: Planning, Drafting
& Editing.

1.2.3 The essay should be THREE pages long, excluding the title page and any
appendix (if necessary).

1.2.4 The entire text, headings, and page numbers must be typed using Times New
Roman. The font size acceptable for the general text is 12 point and 1.15 spacing,
should not be scripted or italicized except for scientific names and terms in
different languages. Footnotes should be at least 8 point. Bold print can be used

for headings.

1.2.5 Your essay must be your original work. IF YOU ARE FOUND OUT TO COPY
OR PLAGIARIZE YOUR FRIENDS’ WORK, OR FROM OTHER SOURCES, YOU
ARE AUTOMATICALLY GIVEN A ZERO (0).
