CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

In our modern days, washing clothes are still part of our daily routine where we still

encounter clotheslines. Clotheslines are common part of inside and outside houses. Clothesline

let clothes to be hold be dry for a short period of time. There are numerous innovation of

clothesline in fact most of it were DIYs and are just made of extra wires or cables. There are

seldom clothesline which has an ergonomically purpose and fit with the users desired

outcome. Given that, this gave way for the researcher to come up with the idea of proposing

their Hang-In clotheslines.

The Hang-In clothesline is generally an off-the-shelf product purchased and could be

installed in the yard, laundry room, or bathroom or in simply called terrace where houses commonly

hang their clothes. Installation of Hang-In clotheslines could be apply necessarily in common

houses. Most consumers, specifically mothers, complaint about the height of the clotheslines

which is too high and sometimes risky for those living in high story building and also the

process of hanging clothes which makes their biceps numb because of too much repetition of

hanging clothes. With this issue the researchers came up with the product of designing a

clothesline, the so called “HANG-IN”, which addressed concerns or even complaints of the
consumers when it comes on hanging clothes. With this product concept, only small force

within a short time would be apply in order to reach clothesline whenever hanging clothes and

ensure an ergonomically purpose for the users.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main problem of this study is to understand how effectively and at the same time

efficiently the product would addressed concerns of the users. In order to gather information,

the researchers formulate the following questions that can lead to as solution to solve the

problem.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the difficulties experienced by the users in hanging clothes?

2. Why it takes time to hang clothes?

3. Is clothes lingerie helpful enough to hang clothes?

4. What are the benefits that consumer obtains in using HANG-IN product?

5. Who will be then prospective market for this proposal?

Objective of the Study

The primary objective of this study is to produce a clothesline where the users can easily

hang clothes without experiencing numbness and fatigue in their arms. The objectives in this

study are:

1. To identify the difficulties experienced by the users in hanging clothes

2. To determine the reasons why it takes time to hang clothes

3. To know if clothes lingerie is helpful enough to hang clothes

4. To determine the benefits that consumer obtains in using HANG-IN product

5. To identify the prospective market for this proposal

Importance of the Study

The significance of the study contains a discussion of the relevance of the study and

includes also the explanation of who will benefit from the study and how will they benefit.

There are factors that determine how the said product is beneficial:

House owners

This would be valuable in common houses which usually makes DIY clotheslines in front

of their houses. In could benefit common houses in way that they have their own clotheslines

within their house and hang clothes without too much exposure from the sun.

To those living in high story building

This product is evenly more reliable for those user living in apartment, condos or any
high story building because through this this they would not tend to go up to rooftop to dry
clothes and another good thing it could lessen the risk when hanging clothes in the balcony, in
a way that it avoid accidents from falling in high, tight, and crowded balcony.

To the Future Researchers

This study would be beneficial to students as it would serve as reference in their future

research and other related studies. They would be exposed to new innovations and potential

products that can be used as substitutes and other resources.

To Health

Upon the development of the study, this will lessen the exposure to of the user under

the skin which can might cause skin health issues.

Community

Through this study, people of the community would be aware of having their own
ergonomically clothing line and thus lessen wires outside or in front of houses which affect
parking lots or ways where vehicles pass.

Research Methodology

The researchers used the following methodologies in gathering data:

Interviews

The researchers used interview to seek information on how people hang their clothes at

high clothesline. Also, this helps to identify difficulties experienced by people from different

household.

Survey

It is a method used by the researchers to collect primary information for their proposed

product. The purpose of the survey is to acquire objective and/or subjective (opinions,

attitudes) information on how people hang their clothes, what are the difficulties they have

experienced in doing it and what are the improvements they want in their clothesline.

Introduction

Market Study

This Section presents the marketing research wherein potential consumers and possible

competitors were examined. The evaluation of the current marketing strategies, the technique

used in marketing campaigns, and information to support the marketing activities were also

presented.

This part of study helped the researchers to determine the nature, size and growth of

the demand as well as the supply situation for the proposed product. The factors affecting the

market as well as the competitive position of the proposed project and its potential market

share were likewise studied. This will give deep analysis of the present market standing of the

product and competition among companies of the same field. This chapter will evaluate the

strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that the business might encounter as it

General Market Information

This part of the study determines and classifies the size and nature of the present and

potential customers of the proposed product. It will analyze the gathered data to identify the
competitive position of the product. The target market area of the study is the household of the

City of Tanauan, Batangas. They choose it as market as they were tasked and assigned to

conduct survey as much as possible within the city near at FAITH.

Market Description

The target customer for Hang-In product are household concerned especially those

mothers wherein hanging clothes had been part of their concerned when washing clothes. The

researchers introduced the proposed product particularly in Tanauan area because of

availability and the factor of being near.

Demand

Demand is an economic principle referring to a consumer's desire to purchase

goods and services and willingness to pay a price for a specific good or service. Also, it

is the total amount of funds which individuals or organizations want to commit for

spending on goods or services over a specific period.

The researchers prepared a survey questionnaire to collect information with

regards to the nature of competition on the product. The data that was used by the

proponents were the results gathered from the conducted survey. By using the Slovin’s

Formula, the sample size was determined.

N = total population
N = no. of samples

E = margin of error / error margin 0.05

The proponents calculated the sample size as follows:

Supply

Supply is a fundamental economic concept that describes the total amount of a specific

good or service that is available to consumers. Supply can relate to the amount available at a

specific price or the amount available across a range of prices if displayed on a graph.

Demand and Supply Analysis

In this chapter, the researchers had to analyze the number of respondents who would

patronize the product based on the survey conducted. This part of the study is the most

important part of the marketing aspect. If the demand of a particular product is greater than its

supply, there would be shortage while if the demand of a product is less than its supply, there

would be a surplus.

SWOT Analysis

SWOT analysis is a structured planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses,

Opportunities and Threats involved in a project of in a business venture. It involved specifying

the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external

factors that were favorable and unfavorable in achieving those objectives.

Strengths

 HANG-In is designed to eliminate numbness in users’ arm whenever hanging clothes.

 It lessen the risk of accidents when users tend to hop in on high surface just to put

clothes on high clothesline.

 Its uniqueness made it as strength because of its rolling style

 Applicable on any type of houses

Weaknesses

 The limit of clothes that could be hang

 Does not undergo professional quality testing

 Insufficient presence of the product in the market

 Product is new and is not well known by consumers

Opportunities

 In demand to public market due to consumers desires

Threats

 Similar products in cheaper price as well as better designs

 Customers hesitation in buying product

COMPANY NAME

In establishing such name for a company, the proponents consider the main objective

and goal of Industrial Engineers, "innovation", by which new idea, creative thoughts and new

imaginations are generated and converted into useful products. Innovative works are the

outcome of thinking out-of-the-box and making decisions that satisfy the current needs of

others with extraordinary solutions. The proponents are working together to provide users an

innovative product that is of high quality and is also low in cost. Corporation is added to the

company name to indicate the group of people acting together as single entity.

Brand Name

With the introduction of a new product in highly competitive market, a catchy brand

name must be planned. The researchers of the study came up with a great idea and named

the product "Hang-In Clothesline". There are meanings behind the words that are involved. To

"hang" the clothes in an easier way is the main reason why the researchers came up with this

innovated clothesline. The second word "in" has a double meaning that is also related to the

product. The first meaning being "in" is also shortened word for indoors where the uniqueness

and purpose of the product is defined. The second meaning of the word "in" would be to

describe the product as if it would be trending on the market or more specifically, in fashion.

Competitve Position
Hang-In clothesline has an affordable price and more improve features compared to

other simple clotheslines. It is also produce locally. This makes the product edge against the

other existing simple products. The product can be considered DIY or simply can be made by

houses owners if there’s enough availability if the materials and this may lead to the

satisfaction of the customers.

Proposed Marketing Strategies

The current marketing strategies of the existing business competitors are as follows:
