EXPERIMENT 3: SIEVE ANALYSIS

PART A: SIEVE ANALYSIS

1.0 OBJECTIVE

1) to determine the percentage of different grain sizes contained within a soil.

2) to determine the distribution of the coarser, larger-sized particles

2.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students should be able to apply the knowledge and skills they have
learned to:
a) The distribution of different grain sizes affects the engineering properties of soil.
b) Can classifying the types of soil based on analysis grain sizes.

3.0 THEORY

Sieve analysis is used to determine the distribution of the larger grain sizes. The soil is passed
through a series of sieves with the mesh size reducing progressively, and the proportions by
weight of the soil retained on each sieve are measured.

4.0 EQUIPMENTS

a. Set of sieves

c. Balance b. Sieve shaker

d. Cleaning brush
5.0 PROCEDURES

1. Write down the weight of each sieve as well as the bottom pan to be used in the analysis.
2. Record the weight of the given dry soil sample.
3. Make sure that all the sieves are clean, and assemble them in the ascending order of sieve
numbers (#4 sieve at top and #200 sieve at bottom). Place the pan below #200 sieve.
Carefully pour the soil sample into the top sieve and place the cap over it.
4. Place the sieve stack in the mechanical shaker and shake for 10 minutes.
5. Remove the stack from the shaker and carefully weigh and record the weight of each
sieve with its retained soil. In addition, remember to weight and record the weight of the
bottom pan with its retained fine soil.

6.0 FORMULAS

Cu = D60/D10

Cc = (D30)2/(D10 x D60)
7.0 RESULT AND CALCULATIONS

PAN
8.0 QUESTIONS

1. Plot the percentage passing (%) versus Particle size (mm)

2. From the graph plotted, determine:
(a) percentage of different particle size fractions ( to determine G, S)
(b) The value of D10, D30, D60 from grading curve and finding the Cu and Cc
(c) Classifying the grade of the soil
