LESSON: BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GRAPHICS AND LAYOUT


The elements and principles of design are the building blocks of a successful beautiful design. The elements of design are
the things or tools that make up a design while the principles of design are what we do to those elements.

Before we can produce a high-quality design project whether designing a website, designing a tarpaulin, creating banners
or logos, we need to know and follow the basic principles and elements of design. As you go on to compete the activities

in this module, keep this question in mind, Why is it that the design of a project, website or art has an
instant impact on a people’s opinion while content has more of a slow effect?

Explore: Let’s begin the module by performing the activity below in order to check your prior knowledge
about the lesson.

ACTIVITY 1 – CHECK THE WEB


In creating any design, we should always remember the different types of elements to be used and how to use them
properly. Given the picture below what can you say about the design of the website? Also, answer the following
questions. Write your answers in the Learning Activity Sheet (LAS) that can be found at the end of this module.

What is it?
Design is one of the most important factors when building a brand. If you don't put time, effort and even money into this,
it may result in an unsuccessful business. The design is what will set you apart from your competition and help you garner
the desired emotion or feeling from customers.

What is it?
The elements of design are the parts that define the visual, the tools and components that a person uses to create a
composition. In other words, they represent the base of graphic design. The principles of design, on the other hand, are all
about how a person uses the elements to create a visual and convey a message. The most significant difference between
design principles and elements is that the principles of design can be labeled as rules, while elements are the components
that are going to help you follow those rules for the best design outcome.

What is it?
The elements and principles of art and design are the foundation of the language we use to talk about art. The elements of
art are the visual tools that the artist uses to create a composition. Knowing how to use the E’s and P’s of art and design
helps us to create ICT content to communicate and exchange ideas through platforms like social networking sites, video
conferencing and instant messaging apps.
