BSME – 3 Assignment no. 2

1. Number of teeth for the Pinion and Gear:

𝑁𝑃 𝑇𝑃 = 𝑁𝐺 𝑇𝐺
Say the pinion has 24 teeth, then
1800(24) = 1200 𝑇𝐺
𝑇𝐺 = 36 Teeth
2. Pitch Diameter:

𝑁𝑃 𝐷𝑃 = 𝑁𝐺 𝐷𝐺
Say the gear is 90 mm, then

1800𝐷𝑃 = 1200(90)

𝐷𝑃 = 60 𝑚𝑚

3. Diametral Pitch:

24 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ
𝑃𝐷 = 60 𝑚𝑚
= 0.4 𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ⁄𝑚𝑚

4. Circular Pitch:

𝐷 𝜋(60)
𝑃𝐶 = 𝑇
= 24
= 7.853981634 𝑚𝑚⁄𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑡ℎ

5. Choose a Pressure Angle:

𝑃𝐴 = 20°

→ For normal spur gear transmissions, the pressure angle is usually 20°

• From Gear Standards

6. Addendum:

a= = = 2.5 mm
𝑃𝑑 0.4

7. Dedendum:

𝑇𝑡 = = = 3.927
𝑃𝑑 0.4

𝑏 0.1
𝑇 ′ 𝑡 = 𝑇𝑡 − 2 = 3.927 − 2

13. Angle intercepted by tooth thickness:

• For pinion:
𝜃𝑃 360
=
3.877 𝜋(60)

𝜃𝑃 = 7.404524572°

• For gear:
𝜃𝐺 360
3.977

𝜃𝐺 = 5.063673669°
14. Base circle of Gear & Pinion:

• Gear:

𝐷𝐵𝐺 = 90𝑐𝑜𝑠20 = 84.57233587 𝑚𝑚

• Pinion

𝐷𝐵𝑃 = 60𝑐𝑜𝑠20 = 56.38155725 𝑚𝑚
