ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to investigate the student’s perception about


using YouTube in English learning process. The use of YouTube as a media
in English learning/ESL is a great idea to fill the education needed. Using
YouTube in teaching and learning process has become a trend. The
participant of this study is all students of junior high school, senior high
school and college students in Jakarta. The sample of this study is 100
students in Jakarta. Data will collect by using open-ended questionnaire that
collected of five-point Likert Scale to gauge student’s perception about using
YouTube in English Learning/ESL. Finding from this study indicate that……

1. Introduction
In this modern era is often called as an era of technology,
because many people are use technology. Technology is human
knowledge in to blend a resource to produce a product. Technological
developments have a positive impact on all areas, one of them is
education. Technology is useful in our life, especially in education. It
can be seen that many teachers use technology as a media used in
teaching and learning process. Not only that, technology also makes
it easier for the educational world. There are many of technology that
people can use in education such as using computer and internet
network. Computer and Internet networks can be used as a student
media or study source to get more information about English material.
The use of technology can give a positive impact in learning and
teaching English process.
In English learning, to make students enjoy and happy to learn
English the teacher should make the effective and success in teaching
process. To create the effective and success in English learning, the
teacher should use the creative and interesting learning media for
students in the classroom. The use of creative learning media can
improve student’s motivation in English learning. Not only that, the
use of technology in teaching and learning process is important to get
more students attention in English learning. Students will more pay
attention to the material given if teacher use technology in learning
English. There are many of medias technology that can use in teaching
and learning process such as You Tube, Facebook, Video, Vlog,
Twitter and many other media used in various purpose. You Tube is
one of interest media that often used in teaching and learning process.
Having a good English skill is important, starting from
speaking, listening, reading and writing. Therefore, the teacher
should be used a technology in teaching English. The use of
technology in teaching and learning process can make the teacher


 

 

easier to tell the material in the classroom. One of a technology that


the teacher use as a media in English learning is You Tube. According
to (Jalaluddin, 2016) You Tube is regarded one of the most effective
ways to achieve success in English classes. You tube is a website that
contains music, video, video clip, TV clip or short movie. Not only
that, but there is also the education content in you tube. For example,
short video about vocabulary, how to speak fluently and how to write
carefully. Teacher can use you tube as a learning media to solve the
student problem in English learning.
On the other hand, You tube is often used as a media in English
learning. Jalaluddin (2016) state that you tube is a tool that facilitates
language learning and teaching, boots confidence, provide aunthentic
materials and also increase the students English learning. Most of
students use YouTube to help them in doing the homework and search
more information about English learning. Using YouTube in teaching
and learning process has become a trend. There are many of benefit
of using you tube in English learning process such as help the students
to learn English very well, using You tube as a media in English
learning can make learning fun and students feel more comfortable in
learning process and using You tube can increase students learning
(Sakkir et al., 2020).
However, using You tube in English learning would make
problem for students to understand video language, the language uses
in You tube video can make students confounding to understand the
meaning (Jalaluddin, 2016). The lack of student’s technology skill.
The poor internet network has become a problem on using a You tube.
YouTube can easily distract the students and get them off the topic
easily (Jalaluddin, 2016).
The use of the website in education has been widely
recognized by some teachers or researchers over the world Clifton &
Mann. (2011); Duffy (2008); Fralinger & Owens (2009); Burke &

 
 

 

Snyder (2008); Jaffar (2012); Orús, et.all (2016). In Makassar


University, the students use You tube to enhance English language
(Sakkir et al., 2020). Jon & Michael (2011) maintain that YouTube is
useful for the teachers who are interested in promoting learners’
autonomy. Not only that, you tube can also build students confident
in learning process.
Within the framework of this report, you tube is a familiar
technology that can use as a media in learning and teaching process.
You tube is useful to engaging motivation of students in English
learning. The use of you tube as a media in English learning has many
of perfective from students and teacher. The objective of this research
is to investigate the student’s perception about using you tube in
English learning process.
1.1. Research Question
Regarding to explanation of introduction shown above,
the researcher specifies 1 main question of research: What are
the student’s perceptions about using YouTube to
accommodate students learning of English?
1.2. Research Purpose
The purpose of this research is to investigate the student’s
perception about using YouTube in English learning process.
1.3. Research Significant
Theoretically, this research can give benefits to the sake
of students English learning.

2. Theoretical Framework

 
 

 

In this chapter the researcher describes related studies, English


learning or English Foreign Language, the use of YouTube in English
learning, four language skill in English, the perception about using
YouTube in English learning and theory of Computer Assisted Language
Learning (CALL)
2.1. Learning
Gage & Berliner (1992:225) defined learning as " the
process whereby an organism changes its behaviour as a result
of experiences". This mean that learning must take time
because it will increase education and a change in the
behaviour that occurs in the process of learning. Learning is
important for us to get more education that we don’t know
before.
2.2. English Learning EFL/ESL
Learning a foreign language has a great education value.
Learning a foreign learning (EFL) is an abbreviation for
'English as a Foreign Language'. English foreign language is
the learning of English learning to people whose first language
is not English. For example: an Indonesian people learning
English language to communication with other people. This
learning can increase students awareness and appreciation of
their language and culture as well as learning and learning to
get to know other language and cultural.
According to Khoirudin (2016) “Learning English as a
Foreign Language in Indonesia” focused in knowing the
learner’s aims in language learning especially in Indonesia
with the view of Indonesian learners. From the explanation
above, it can be concluded that Learning English means a
conscious and active process of getting English knowledge
and skills.
2.3. Four Language Skill and Component in English

 
 

 

In English, there are four skill that is important in


language. They are writing, listening, speaking and reading.
All of them is related to each other. Someone who masters four
skills of English will master English in actively and passively
(Solahudin, 2008). This mean in learning language teacher and
students should learn four language skill such as speaking,
listening, writing and reading you will be master in English
passively and actively.
a. Writing

Writing is a productive that one of four skill of the


English language. Writing is a comprehensive skill
that implicate vocabulary, rhetoric, conception,
grammar and other of language. Writing can enhance
student’s idea and creatively in English language
because students are asked try to write their idea with
word, sentence and other element of writing.

In addition, Rivers (1981, p. 294) stated that


writing is conveying information or expression of
original ideas in a consecutive way in the new
language. It’s mean students can write their ideas,
feeling with other. Students who feel difficult in
communication orally can be help by writing. Writing
is important for students.

b. Listening

Listening is known as a receptive skill. Listening


is require people to use ears and brain to comprehend
language it is being spoken to us. Nation & Newton
(2009, p.37) in their book stated “Listening is the
natural precursor to speaking; the early stages of

 
 

 

language development in a person’s first language (and


in the naturalistic acquisition of other languages) are
dependent on listening.

Listening is the way of learning a language. When


students ear and brain the language, they can get more
information about new language from what they have
ears. This situation can build student’s knowledge in
learning a language. When this knowledge is build up,
the students can try begin to speak well.

c. Speaking

Speaking is important skill of four skill of the


English language. According to (Glenn, 2003),
“speaking is the verbal use of language to
communicate with others”. It means speaking is
effective skills by speaking the words related to the
messages. Thus, when we talk, we use speaking as our
device to communicate. Talking and communicating
cannot be separated part of speaking since it is
important to share the message that we want to
communicate.

Speaking is the most essential skill in language


teaching and learning. According to Nunan (2001)
speaking is a skill that which generally has to be
learned and practiced. Burns (2012) defined that
learning to speak in another language is a challenging
undertaking because speaking is a highly complex and
dynamic skill that involves the use of several
simultaneous processes – cognitive, physical and
socio-cultural – and a speaker’s knowledge and skills

 
 

 

have to be activated rapidly in real-time but speaking


is considered a skill to practice and master. It
concludes that speaking is the ability to express
something in spoken language

d. Reading

Reading is a receptive skill. It require people to use


brain and eye to understand the written of spoken
language. According to Grabe & Stoller (2013, p.1)
“Reading is the ability to draw meaning from the
printed page and interpret the information
appropriately.” It’s mean reading can build students
critical thinking to integrate information and convey it
through writing.

According to Harlinda et al., (2019) Reading is


merely decoding-translating written symbols into
corresponding sounds. It’s mean reading is important
skill. If people not reading a lot of word in English,
consequently they didn’t know the meaning of English
word. Because reading can make people understand
some word to order the meaning of text.

2.4. CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning)


According to Sbordoni et al., (1992) CALL (Computer
Assisted Language Learning) is that accommodate its changing
nature in any process in which a learner use computer and as a
result, improver their language. It’s mean CALL (Computer
Assisted Language Learning) is one of subject or media that can
be used in teaching and learning process. Using CALL
(Computer Assisted Language Learning) in learning and
teaching process can improve student’s language.

 
 

 

CALL has come to encompass issues of materials design,


technologies, pedagogical theories and modes of instruction
(Sbordoni et al., 1992). CALL is used as a learning media
especially language learning those which adapt existing
computer - based material. Not only that the material that use
CALL is also made specifically for language learning and
adapted to computer – based material.
As a result, CALL is unorganized amorphous which is well
developed in term of technology advance in software or
hardware. CALL is a complete method of learning a language. It
can be use inside or outside the classroom. Not only that, but
CALL is also can be implemented into practice general skill such
as reading, writing, speaking and listening. CALL is a computer
as a tool in teaching and learning process especially in language
learning in term of technology advance in software or hardware.
2.5. Web based (YouTube)

YouTube is one of learning platform that is useful for


students in English learning. YouTube is the effective way to
get student English success. It can be used in English learning
classroom for enhance various skill in language, such as
speaking, listening, reading and writing. YouTube is one of

 
 

 

media learning that can be use both inside or outside of the


classroom to learn the language.

YouTube is a website that share many of video content


such as video clip, music, film, video blog and educational
video. This media can help the students do their assignment or
homework. Not only that, but also students can also get more
information about the materials that they don’t know before.
YouTube is not only about entertainment video but there are
many videos about English learning can found easily in
YouTube. Therefore, the use of internet and web like
YouTube as a media learning in the classroom is possible.

The use of YouTube in teaching and learning process


has become a trend. Using YouTube in English Learning has
given a positive impact to student’s motivation. Using
YouTube in English learning can take students attention,
enhance student’s concentration, make students interest in
learning, build students brainstorm, make learning fun and
meaningful.

In addition, Ghasemi, Hashemi, and Bardine (2011)


also identified categories of videos featured on YouTube: first
Video and vehicle, comedy, education, entertainment, film
and animation, gaming, how to & style, music, new & politic,
non-profit and activism, people and vlog, science &
technology, sport, travel and event.

Beside the featured on YouTube, There are also


advantages of using YouTube in classroom (Jalaluddin, 2016):

1. YouTube is very useful tool because it can be use


inside or outside classroom.
2. Video have compelling power in the language.

3. It provides exposure authentic English.


4. It can be source of motivation for the students and
they can stay in the class for longer time.
5. It is enjoyed by students.
6. Using YouTube in the classrooms attracts student’s
attentions greatly and it makes classroom very
interactive for language learning.
7. YouTube provides an opportunity for students to
comment on the videos and ask questions about
videos.
8. YouTube is not only a source to learn but it also
inspires the students.

` Beside the advantages there are also disadvantages of


using YouTube (Jalaluddin, 2016):

1. The kind of language level used in the videos can be


confounding for the students.
2. Students can face the problems in understanding the
language of videos.
3. Some videos can sometimes be inappropriate
without warning.
4. Sometimes tasteless and inappropriate contents can
bother students while looking for resources.
5. YouTube can easily distract the students and get
them off the topic easily.
6. There is no way to block the inappropriate content
on YouTube when you are using it in the classroom.

Perception is receiving, collecting the data of people


argument and apprehension with the main or sense. Our
perception toward language will be influenced through our
parents, teacher and even our friends which in turn will be
define based on the social context in which we are living.
According to Steward L. Tubbs & Stylvia Mors
“Perception is an active process as one selectively perceives,
organizes and interprets what one experiences. Perception will
also depend on our own personal experience with the language
and the sociated cultures. For example, student learning
English using YouTube as a media in English learning
process. Based on student’s experience using YouTube in
learning English, students can express what they feeling and
perception about using YouTube in learning English.
On the other hand, perception is an active process as one
selectively perceives, organize and interprets what one
experience. It’s defines that perception as process to express a
massage and information in human brain. Not only that
perception is also tell an experience about object, event,
education or relation of information. To interpret the sensory
stimuli that involve sensation attention expectation and
motivation.
So, from the expert explained above, it can be concluded
that student’s perception is student’s interpretation of their
experience then it is shape student’s knowledge and express
student’s feeling or useful view of the world.

 
 
 
 

3. Research Methodology

3.1. Method
This study is use quantitative method within design
survey. Quantitative research is a structure way of collecting
and analysing data obtained from different source. A survey
design is use in this research to know the impact of using
social media in EFL learner can be more appropriate. In
analysing the student’s perception, the researcher use
questionnaire open – ended to know the student’s perception
about using You Tube in learning English / ESL.
3.2. Time and Location
This study is conduct to all student of junior high school,
senior high school and college student’s in Jakarta. This
research is conducted to all student of junior high school,
senior high school and college students in Jakarta. this
research is conducted online because of the covid 19 was
widespread in Jakarta. This study is implemented on April
2021.
3.3. Respondent/ population sample
The population of this study is all students of junior high
school, senior high school and college students in Jakarta.
The total population of all students in Jakarta for about 300
students. The writer used cluster random sampling in
selecting the sample of the research. The sample of this study
is consist of 100 students in Jakarta.
3.4. Instrument
The writer will use questionnaire closed – ended that
consist of twenty question using Likert Scale which related
to the student’s perception toward using YouTube in EFL
classroom. The questionnaires made use of the Likert scale

ranging from 1= Strongly Disagree, 2= Disagree, 3=


Undecided, 4= Agree and 5= Strongly Agree. The writer use
a questionnaire from (Sakkir et al., 2020) and (Kurniawan,
2019) as an instrument in this study.
3.5. Technique of Collecting and Analysing data

In this study, the writer will use questionnaire as an


instrument and GOOGLE FORM as a tool or technique to
colleting data. The questionnaire will be in link form and
share through WhatsApp group. The questionnaire analysis
by using Likert scale which related to the student’s
perception toward using YouTube in EFL. The questionnaire
made use of the Likert scale ranging:

1. SD: Strong Disagree


2. D: Disagree
3. N: Neutral
4. A: Agree
5. SA: Strongly Agree

After the whole data had been collected, the writer


collected and move the data to the SPSS. To calculate
questionnaire data into percentage, the researcher used the
percentage technique using this formula. The formula used in
analysing the data as follows:

3.6. Procedure

In this modern era, there are many of students using


technology as a media for learning one of the technologies
that usually use as a learning media is YouTube. In this study
I will do a research to get the perception of students about
using YouTube in EFL classroom and to know is there any
benefit using YouTube in English learning process.

First of all, I got a problem of this study. after I got a


problem of this study prepare the solution to the problem of
this study. after that, choose the participant. After that, make
a questionnaire as an instrument for getting the data. After
that, give the questionnaire to the participant of this study.
The questionnaire will be in link form and share through
WhatsApp group. After giving the questionnaire to the
participant, collecting the data from the questionnaire which
related to the student’s perception about using YouTube in
English Learning. Then, analysis the data that has been
collected. The last is describe and write the result of the data
