Before I start, I will show you a picture of Donald Trump's timeline.

Now look at the

given timeline on the slide quickly and answer the following question by looking for specific
information in a quick manner.
The first question: When was Donald Trump born?
If you have the answer, raise your hand.
As you can see on the screen, in 1946, Trump is born in New York City.
The second question: In 1971, whose real-estate company did Trump take control of?
As you can see on the timeline, in 1971, he took control of his father’s real-estate company.
The third question: Did Trump open Trump Tower in Manhattan in 1983?
Yes or no? Yes, he did. In 1983, Trump Tower opens in Manhattan.
So, your eyes are too fast, that’s why you saw it immediately.
Do you know that we could use that skill in reading English?
So are you ready to discover how fun it is to read? If yes, let's go now to our lesson which is
a style of reading - Scanning
What is scanning?
- Scanning is a reading technique that is done by looking at the most important details of a
text in a quick manner.
- It allows readers to locate "specific information" like names, dates, places, statistics, or
facts which are usually noticeable in a text.
- It skips a large section or part of a text.
Scanning là đọc nhanh bài viết với mục đích tìm kiếm dữ liệu, thông tin cụ thể cần thiết cho
việc trả lời câu hỏi.
Scanning được áp dụng khi cần tìm kiếm các dữ liệu trong bài viết như tên riêng, số liệu,
ngày tháng, hoặc các cụm từ mà không cần nắm được nội dung của toàn bài text.
How to scan:
- Read the question and SEARCH FOR KEY WORDS or ideas associated with the question.
If you are looking for numeric information, look for numbers first.
If you are looking for a person, scan for a name.
- LESS READING AND MORE SEARCHING, only pay attention to the word or phrase you
are looking for. Don't read the text for meaning.
- Your eyes then MOVE QUICKLY OVER THE PAGE, flitting around the text, back and forth,
up and down.
- When you have found the needed information, carefully read the sentences in which it
appears to confirm that you have located the correct information.
Now, I will give you an example. This is a paragraph about Adrian Hayward - a big soccer
fan. And my question is: How much money would Hayward win if Xabi Alonso scored a goal
from behind the halfway line?
And what are your keywords? How much money...
Now you know you're looking for an amount of money
The first one is 200. The second is 25.000. And then you need to carefully read the
sentences in which it appears to confirm that you have located the correct information. In the
first one, you cannot see the score. However in the second one, you can see the sentence
"". And the answer is: “”
Before we apply this skill to reading. I have a few questions to see how well you understand
this theory.
1. When you scan a text, should you look for specific information or general idea?
As I mentioned, Scanning is a reading technique that is done by looking at the most
important details.
2. When scanning, do you need to read every word in the text?
We only pay attention to the word or phrase we are looking for
3. In scanning, do you have to understand the meaning of the text?
Read the question and SEARCH FOR KEY WORDS or ideas associated with the question.
