Content Standard The learners demonstrate understanding of key concepts of sets and the real number
system.
Performance Standard The learners are able to formulate challenging situations involving sets and real numbers
and solve these in a variety of strategies.
Learning Competencies (M7NS-Ia-1): The learners illustrate well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets, null set,
cardinality of sets, union and intersection of sets and the different of two sets.
Content Numbers and Number Sense
Reference/s ADM modules Q1 Module 1
Objectives In this lesson, the learners are expected to use Venn Diagrams to represent sets and
subsets.

TRIVIA!!!
Did you know John Venn?
John Venn was an English mathematician, logician and philosopher noted for
introducing the Venn Diagram. He introduced the concept of representing the sets
pictorially by means of closed geometric figures called Venn Diagram.
Venn Diagram consists of a rectangle which represents the universal set and circles
inside the rectangle which represent the set or sets being considered.

1. Given set B which is a set of all vowels in the English alphabet. Draw and label the Venn
diagram to represent set B.

Solution:
The vowels in the English alphabet are a, e, i, o, u.
Hence, B = {a, e, i, o, u}.

2. Let U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and A ={1, 3, 5}. Show the relationship between the universal set
(U) and Set A.

Solution: Let us use a rectangle to represent the universal set and a circle
to represent set A. Since
all the elements of A are elements of U, the circle representing A is placed
inside the rectangle . The
elements of the universal set that are in A are inside
the circle, while those that are not in A are outside
the circle .

instances of the new Given: U = {counting numbers less than 10}, A = {1, 2, 4} and B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}, what is the
lesson relationship between these sets? Draw a Venn Diagram to show the relationship.

D. Discussing new concepts Learning Task: I DO IT!

and practicing new skills 1. Given: A = {c, l, e, a, n} and B = {p, l, e, a, d}. Draw a Venn Diagram to show the
#1 relationship between set A and set B.

2. Given U= {11,12,13,15,19,21,23} , X={12,15,21} and Y= {11,13,19,23}. Draw a Venn

diagram to show the relationship between Set X and Set Y.

H. Making generalizations Summing Up!
and abstractions about Representation of Sets by Using Venn Diagrams
the lesson  Each individual set is represented by a circle and enclosed within a rectangle which
represents the universal set.
 Sets having no common element are represented separately inside the rectangle while
those having the common elements are shown by overlapping circles.
 The elements are written inside the circle representing the set containing them and the
common elements are written in the parts of circles that overlap.

Let’s Do it!
U = ____________________
P = ____________________
Q = ____________________
