Hydrological and Hydraulic Analysis of Bridge at Km 80+540 over

Saraswati River of Tharad-Ahmedabad Exp.

Cross Section followed for bridge Point 660 m of Survey data
Deepest Bed Level 92.502 m
Silt Factor as per Geotechnical report NIL
Silt factor assumed 2
HFL information received from local enquiry 96.702 m GTS

Discharge Calculation
Catchment Area = 1414 Sq. Km
Discharge by Slope-Area Method = 1560 Cumec
Discharge by Flood Frequency Analysis (Q100) = 1921 Cumec
Observed Maximum discharge 777 Cumec

Adopted Discharge
For Fixing Effective Clear Waterway normal to flow 1921 Cumec
For Fixing HFL 1921 Cumec
For Estimation of Scour 2497 Cumec

Waterway
Lacey's Waterway 210.4 m
33% constriction in Lacey's Waterway 140.9 m
Clear Waterway Provided 290.0 m

Summary of Calculation for Proposed Bridge

Afflux (h) for Q100 0.414 m
Velocity under Bridge for Q100 2.70 m/sec
HFL with afflux for Q100 97.441 m

Scour Calculation (Ignore in case of Rocky Strata)

Q for Scour (1.30*Q100)= 2497 Cumec
Silt Factor= 2 Assumed
Clear Waterway (m) = 210.4
Unit Discharge (Db), (Cumec per m) = 11.9
Normal Scour (m, below HFL) = 5.53
Maximum Scour under Pier (m, below HFL) = 11.06
Maximum Scour under Abutment (m, below HFL) = 7.02
RL (m) of HFL = 97.441
RL (m) of scoured Bed below Pier = 86.381
RL (m) of scoured Bed below Abutment = 90.418

Observations

There is an Existing bridge of span 321 m (15x21.4m) at 10.2km downstream of the

proposed bridge location. As per local enquiry ,the same existing bridge is found
hydrologically adequate. Therefore, on the basis of hydraulic analysis, clear waterway
of 290.0m has been found adequate to pass 100 yr. flood.

Recommendation
Provide clear effective waterway of 290.0 m in square direction with an estimated HFL
of 97.441m.
