I am writing to report the results of the dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS) content and covered conductor
deposition (CCD) testing on the oil samples you recently submitted. The draw date for the samples
was October 20, 2022. Test results follow.

Please note for TC 9954 your DBDS results were >1 ppm. DBDS under sufficiently high
temperatures can break down and become corrosive to the copper in the transformer. Some
researchers have found that as little as 5 ppm of DBDS in the oil may be enough to cause copper
corrosion under some laboratory conditions. From our own experience, it appears that
somewhere in the range of 5 to 25 ppm of DBDS is where oil will give a result of Corrosive on the
Corrosive Sulfur Test. Please also keep in mind that even if oil contains DBDS, if it also contains
metal passivator, then it could give a result of Noncorrosive on the ASTM D1275 test.
For TC 9955, that had a result of result of Fail on the CCD Test, then, pending no contrary advice
from the transformer manufacturer, oil supplier, or insurance company, our general
recommendation follows: If the risk of transformer failure from corrosive sulfur and/or the
consequences of failure appear to be significant, then we recommend that the corrosive oil be
replaced with oil that is deemed noncorrosive by ASTM D1275 and/or has a result of Pass on the
Doble CCD test, that contains
