Day 1/Grade 5 SCIENCE56/Q3/W2

Activity 1
What you need:
Marble
Chalk
Meter stick
Stop watch
Books of equal size
What to do:
1. Place one book each under two of the legs of the table. The top of the table slopes on
one side and will allow a marble to roll down the slope from the bottom.
2. With chalk, mark the starting position of the marble. Use the stop watch to determine
how long the marble takes to roll down the table. If it takes less than three seconds to
roll down the slope, adjust the slope to make it sleep.
3. Find out how the marble rolls in one second, two seconds and three seconds. Record
your observation.
Guided Questions:
1. How could you determine the acceleration of the marble?
2. If the top were longer would you be able to predict the distance of the marble would
travel in four Seconds? In five seconds?

Background Information for Teachers

Motion- in physics, motion is a change in position of an object over time. It described in terms
of displacement, distance, velocity, acceleration, time and speed

KINDS OF MOTION

1. Rotary motion-is turning round in a circle, such as a wheel turning

2. Linear Motion- is a moving in a straight line, such as on a paper trimmer.
3. Reciprocating motion- is moving backwards and forwards in a straight line as in
cutting with a saw.
4. Oscillating motion- is swinging from side to side, like a pendulum in a clock.

Appendix 3
Day 1/Grade 5 SCIENCE56/Q3/W2

Background Information for Teachers

Acceleration-it is a change in velocity of a moving object. It is cause by a force such as

gravity 10

Acceleration is causes by an applied force and is affected by the mass of a body. A body
accelerates when a force acts on it to make item move. The gravitational pull of the earth

GROUP ACTIVITY:

What causes Motion

Materials: coin,cart,footrule,glass,thin cardboard
Procedure:
1.Lay a cart on atable or any flat surface.Does it move? Now, push it a little. How far does it
move? Push it with greater force. How far did it go?

11
2. Push it back to its original position while another pupil is opposing your push. Can the cart
move?
3.Cover the glass with a thin cardboard. Place the coin at the center of the cardboard. Observe
the coin.Does it move? Why or why not?
4.With a sudden flick of the finger at one end of the cardboard, push it away. What happens to
the coin this time? Why?

Conclusion(Answer Briefly)
What causes an object to move?

GROUP ACTIVITY:

Situation:

There are two buses travelling in the same place, the same time and direction.Bus A is
fully loaded with passengers while Bus B has no passenger.
Questions:

1. Which bus accelerates faster and slower?

2. Which bus reaches the destination earlier? Why?
3. What causes an object to accelerate?
4. How does the mass of a body affect acceleration?

14
c. the mass of an object affects its acceleration
d. the mass of an object does not affect its acceleration

2. Why is it more difficult to stop fully loaded truck than an unloaded one?
a.because its mass affects acceleration
b.because it has less mass than the other
