A Semi Detailed Plan in MATH 7

March 19, 2019 (Tuesday)

I. OBJECTIVES:

At the end of 60 minutes, the Grade 7 learners are expected to calculates the
measures of variability of grouped data.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Topic/Lesson: Measures of Variability of Grouped Data

Sub-Topic: Range, standard deviation and variance

III. PROCEDURES:

A. Greetings:

Good Afternoon Grade 7 Sampaguita! May I know from the attendance officer
who’s in/out today?

B. Review:

Start the lesson by assessing students knowledge of the different mathematics

concepts previously studied by doing Activity 1. LETS TRY THIS!
The students will compete the frequency distribution table by finding the
unknown values.

Score

31-35 11
26-30 10
21-25 5

i= 

Answer the processing questions regarding Activity 1.

1. How did you determine the unknown values in the frequency distribution table?
2. What is the class size?
3. What is the 
fX
?
4. What is the value of the mean in the given distribution table?
5. What is the upper class boundary of the top interval? What about the lower class
boundary of the bottom interval?
6. What is the range?
7. What is the variance of the given distribution table?
8. How would you find the variance?
9. What is the standard deviation?
10. How would you solve for the standard deviation?

C. Presentation of the Lesson:

The teacher will present to the students the measures of variability for grouped
data by posing the question: How are the measures of variability for grouped
data used in solving real-life problems and in making decisions?
D. Development of the Lesson:
Let students read first some important notes on how to calculate the range,
variance and standard deviation of grouped data.

1. Range of Grouped data

- the simplest measure of variability.
- simply the difference between the upper class boundary of the top
interval and the lower class boundary of the bottom interval.

Example: Solve the range

Scores in Second Periodical Test of I-Faith in Mathematics 1

Scores Frequency
46-50 1
41-45 10
36-40 10
31-35 16
26-30 9
21-25 4

Solutions:
Range= Upper Class Boundary of the Highest Interval - Lower Class Boundary of the Lowest Interval
Range= 50.5 - 20. 5
Range= 30

2. Variance of Grouped Data (  )

2

- the average of the square deviation from the mean.

To find the variance, use the formula
Where: f=frequency

2  

f X x  2 X= class mark
x =class mean
 f 1
 f =total number of frequency

Guide students in calculating the variance of grouped data following the steps.
After the learner discover the process of solving the range, variance and standard
deviation, let them do Activity 3 and ask them to answer necessary questions.
(By Group)

E. Go back with the question posed on the first part

How are the measures of variability for grouped data used in solving real-life
problems and in making decisions?(Values Infusion) relating the concepts
learned in real life situations

F. Generalization of the Lesson

As a synthesis on the lesson learned, let them answer the following
What new insights do you have about solving measures of variability of
grouped data? What do you realize after learning and doing different
activities?

IV. EVALUATION:
1. What is the class interval?
2. What is the upper class boundary of the top interval? What about the lower class
boundary of the bottom interval?
3. What is the range?
4. What is the variance of the given distribution table?
5. What is the standard deviation?
