Kinds of Concepts:
1. Superordinate Concepts

- Ex: animal; fruit
2. Basic Level Type Concepts
- Which other similar concepts are
organized
- Ex: dog; pear
3. Subordinate Concepts
- Most specific category of a concept
- Ex: one’s pet dog; pear in one’s hand
4. Formal Concepts
- Defined by specific rules/features
5. Natural Concepts
- Concepts that are formed as a result
of people’s experience in the real
world
6. Prototype
- closely matches the defining
characteristics of a concept
- Ex: A platypus is a “fuzzy” natural
concept
