paraphrasing(유사개념어)/생략구조 때문이다!

So often have I moved, so rough has been the treatment of my little library at
each change of place, and, to tell the truth, so little care have I given to its well-
being at normal times, that even the comeliest of my books shows the result of
unfair usage.
002
His hands become so accustomed to the prescribed movement that even after
he has left the assembly line, he continues to compulsively twist anything that
remotely resembles a screw.

Almost every man attempts to display qualities which he does not possess, so
that scarcely can two persons meet but one is offended by the ostentation of the
other.

A utopian society might demand that the press print nothing until it had reached
absolute certainty. But such a society would be so full of rumor and lies as to
make the errors of our journalism look like models of truth by comparison.
005
It cannot be too often repeated that it is not the so-called blessings of life, its
sunshine and calm and pleasant experiences that make men great, but its rugged
experiences, its storms, and trials. Early hardship, especially, is often a blessing
in disguise.
006
Global climatic stability and ecological resilience are global public goods that
require cooperative global solutions, whereas fossil fuels are market goods that
promote competition and resource struggles. The transition to sustainability
demands new energy sources that are “non-rival,” such as energy from the sun
and wind.

To require perfection is to invite paralysis. The pattern is predictable: as you
see error in what you have done, you steer your work toward what you imagine
you can do perfectly. You cling ever more tightly to what you already know you
can do — away from risk and exploration, and possibly further from the work of
your heart. You find reasons to procrastinate, since not to work is not to make
mistakes.
008
Learning theorists have suggested that the criteria for appraisal be totally
objective — based on publicly observable behaviors and outlined to workers and
supervisors before performance. Workers should be penalized for no such thing
as “poor attitude.”

Texting seems to meet a new communicative need in a society where increased
pressures on time and short attention spans are increasingly the norm. The
medium appeals to people who do not want to waste time engaging in the
linguistic hand-shaking that is needed in traditional face-to-face or voice
telephone conversations

An important consequence of this vast traffic in translated books is that it is
perfectly possible for a Korean to keep abreast of current intellectual and artistic

At times it may be useful to lose a point or game in order to win the match. In life
too, the resources are to be used in an optimal manner. For this at times failures
are to be accepted gladly. Those who fail to do so end up becoming laughing
stocks, while those who do have the last laugh.
012
Waste has always been intrinsic to industrial production. Because industrial
cycles are never complete — because there is no return— there are two
characteristic results of industrial enterprise: exhaustion and contamination.
The energy industry, for instance, is not a cycle, but only a short arc between an
empty hole and poisoned air. And farming, which is inherently cyclic, capable
of regenerating and reproducing itself indefinitely, becomes similarly destructive
and self-exhausting when transformed into an industry.

Rarely are people recruited to an executive team because their strengths are the
best complement to those of the existing team members. When is the last time
you heard a leader talking about how your team needed to add a person who
not only had the technical competence but who could also help build stronger
relationships within the group? The vast majority of the time, we recruit by job
function — and all but ignore individuals’ strengths.

From whatever side Nature is approached obstacles arise which impedes a clear
vision of her; and persistent labor as well as strong desire are necessary for every
step of advance whether the motive is purely the pursuit of natural knowledge or
profitable advantage.

Obviously, using physical punishment on a child for social misbehavior is likely
to have the opposite effect and make the youngster less empathic in the future.
Rather, the best way to bring out one’s mature empathic potential is through
induction, in which parents highlight the other’s perspective, point up the other’s
distress, and make it clear that the child’s action caused it.

For any given topic in science, it should be possible to improve experimental
procedures, develop better statistical tests, explain exceptions, etc. Falling in
love with a theory and developing that contented glow of companionship
is a guaranteed way to overlook opportunities to improve the field. To put it
another way, the scientist needs to develop an eye for imperfections which can be
improved.

In call centers, technology provides an ongoing assessment of performance.
An employee who triggers the online system by failing to meet a defined
standard, such as receiving more than five callbacks on an unresolved issue, is
automatically referred to the appropriate job aid or training event.

The treasure of art is that its reality lives forever. The final product is really an
addition to reality, not simply a way of totally reproducing it. The artist always
contributes something new, something that never was put together in precisely
that way before. Leonardo’s Mona Lisa is not Mona Lisa. The latter has long
since gone to her reward; the former will never die.
020
One of the problems of our time is that there are few effective memes for self-
restraint left. For most people the notion of sin is hopelessly old-fashioned
, and secular attempts to channel energy into complex goals — such as the
concept of good citizenship, of professional pride, of law and order, of disciplined
responsibility — have also lost much of their grip on human consciousness. Yet
the need to help individuals see the necessity for self-discipline is as urgent as
ever.

The machine-made items, precisely because they were convenient, represented
less of the giver ’s personal attention than the hand-made items had done;
thus they were symbolically less intimate. To disguise this loss of symbolic
value, and to invest the manufactured items with a personal touch, retailers
encouraged shoppers to have their purchases giftwrapped. Gift-wrapping
became a ‘decontaminating mechanism’ that removed the presents from the
‘normal flow of bought-and-sold goods’ and made them, for a single ceremonial
moment, emblems of intimacy rather than commerce.

To write a biography, you will need at least a rough scheme; you cannot plunge
in blindly and start ticking off fact after fact about your subject, lest you miss
the forest for the trees and there be no end to your labors. Columbus didn’ just
sail, he sailed west, and the New World took shape from this simple and sensible
design. This is the case in writing too.
023
The green revolution was a mixed blessing. Over time farmers came to rely
heavily on broadly adapted, high-yield crops to the exclusion of varieties
adapted to local conditions. Monocropping vast fields with the same genetically
uniform seeds helps boost yield and meet immediate hunger needs. Yet high-
yield varieties are also genetically weaker crops that require expensive chemical
fertilizers and toxic pesticides.

If the great Newton said that he seemed to have been all his life gathering a

found to prevail, while what seemed disorder has proved to be nothing but

Genes are not immutable things handed down from our parents, but are active
participants designed to take the cue from anything that happens in our lives.
You may have to enter a world in which your genes are not puppet masters

Modern man looks eagerly back into the twilight out of which he has come,
in the hope that its faint beams will illuminate the obscurity into which he

Our understanding of media differences helps clarify the interaction between
the type of skill or knowledge being measured and the medium in which
it is being assessed. For example, consider what the members of the Chicago
Cubs could demonstrate about their knowledge of physics if they were given a
practical test in the ball park. Their ability to intercept a baseball at the precise
place where it falls to earth would clearly demonstrate that they understand
things like velocity and trajectory. But were we to give the ballplayers a paper-
and-pencil test on the principles of physics, they probably would not score as
well.

For Kant, respect for autonomy entails duties to oneself as well as others, most
notably the duty to treat humanity as an end in itself. This duty constrains the
way a person can treat himself. If a person does away with himself in order to
escape from a painful situation, he is making use of a person merely as a means
to maintain a tolerable state of affairs till the end of his life.

The increase in present orientation happens whether fear is natural or self-
induced. Here is an ingenious test of present orientation by asking people to read
digital numbers that flashed rapidly on a small display. When people are in free
fall during a bungee jump, they can read the numbers. The free fall – which elicits
strong emotion – focuses all our mental resources squarely on the present. The
ensuing extra mental power allows people to read numbers that were previously
undecipherable. Fear and excitement heighten our present awareness, sharpen
our instincts, and help us survive.

In everyday life we’re too involved in what is happening to see events clearly,
too much under the sway of our emotions to savor them properly. The writer’s
mission is to give us a faithful picture of life, but to keep it far enough away for
us to be able to appreciate it without fear or entanglement.
032
Perception refers to the meaning we attach to information as it is received
through the senses. Our eyes may capture an image in much the same way as
a camera does, but what we see (or perceive) is influenced by the information
we have stored in our brains. The assignment of meaning to incoming stimuli
depends on prior knowledge and on what we expect to see. In a sense, the brain
checks existing neural networks of information to see if the new information
is something that activates a previously stored neural network.
033
Although artists borrow procedures, forms, and repertoires, they can make no
impact merely by copying what has already been done. The encounter with the
individual is what makes art so supremely interesting: we, the audience, have
set our interests aside, in order to open ourselves to what another person is,
says, and feels. It needs not be new; but it must at least be his. A work is original
to the extent that it originates in its creator. It shows us the world from his or
her perspective, draws us into spheres which are not our own, and enables
us to rehearse the possibilities of feeling on which an ideal community — a
community of sympathy — is founded.

Perhaps if we understood that to determine the course of the future we require
all our attention, every last spark of psychic energy, we would be more willing to
restrain the natural greed of the self, and heed the call of complexity. After all,
it’s not a bad bargain. In exchange for the unnecessary rewards of pleasure, we
gain the always exciting joys of spiritual growth.
035
If we were to hear a movie critic say, “Eddie Murphy’s role was better than most,”
we would be left to speculate about whether the allusion to the role referred
to the character part he was asked to play or his acting. Moreover, the claim
that the role was better than most might be thought to mean that it was better
than the majority of the parts he has been given in films or that his performance
excelled that of most of the other performers in the film.
036
Defensiveness, or tuning out to information that does not fit your picture of
yourself, is a major source of corrosion in relationships. Defensiveness is highly
unrewarding to the sender; instead of facilitating an open communication system
in which you and your partner feel free to share with what you think and feel,
defensiveness tends to develop a closed communication system. In a closed
system, you and your partner tiptoe around one another’s weak egos at the
expense of honesty. Each partner knows what triggers the other’s unrewarding
listening behaviors and may find it easier to avoid painful confrontation.

What is it in the English mind and character, or in the English way of life, that
has proved so favorable to poetry? Englishmen, by reason of their defects
no less than their virtues, are closer than most peoples to those sources from
which poetry springs. If the Englishmen’s home is his castle, so to an almost
unsociable extent is his mind.
038
What issues are promoted can be arbitrary. Compelling images and powerful
narratives get certain issues into the news, while other equally important issues
vanish. The media itself is a stakeholder because newspapers and magazines
want to increase their circulation. As a result, the media often fails to present
what we should hear, but instead, presents what they think we want to hear.
039
Literacy is to reading what mathematics is to counting. Learning to name
numbers does not ensure that one will understand their operations; nor does it
imply that one can use those operations effectively. Learning to correlate spoken
words with the symbols that represent them on a page does not ensure that
one will understand the operations of the spoken or written language. Literacy
means a high degree of competence in analyzing what’s written, evaluating it and
correlating it with reality. By this definition, one may be able to read and still be
hopelessly illiterate.

The majority in a democracy has no more right to tyrannize over a minority than,
under a different system, the latter would have to oppress the former. The saying
that the voice of the people is the voice of God may be quite as untrue, and do
quite as much mischief, as the old theory of the divine right of kings.
041
Most folks believe that science, with its rigorous methodology, is infallible.
However, scientific studies provide “evidence,” not proof. Individual studies
suggest possible answers to questions, but conclusions require that many studies,
using many different methods, point in the same direction. Science is not a means
for finding quick and certain facts, but a slow, methodical process that is prone to
missteps. The process is not 100 percent reliable, nor are researchers 100 percent
objective. So it’s best to maintain a healthy skepticism each time you hear about
the latest “breakthrough” on the evening news.
042
The way our bodies — including voice, mood, posture, and so on — are
influenced by surrounding bodies is one of the mysteries of human existence, but
one that provides the glue that holds entire societies together. It is also one of the
most underestimated phenomena, especially in disciplines that view humans as
rational decision makers. Instead of each individual independently weighing
the pros and cons of his or her own actions, we occupy nodes within a tight
network that connects all of us in both body and mind.

One important aspect of attention is that it is able to be divided . When there is
consistency in a task, that is, when the stimuli occur in highly predictable ways,
with practice the appropriate responses can be made automatically. This does not
require conscious attention. Thus, we can parcel our attentional resources into
units and allocate some to one task and some to another.
044
Saint Paul said the invisible must be understood by the visible. In Greece alone
in the ancient world people were preoccupied with the visible; they were finding
the satisfaction of their desires in what was actually in the world around them.
The storyteller found Hermes among the people he passed in the street. He saw
the god “like a young man at the age when youth is loveliest,” as Homer says.
Greek artists and poets realized how splendid a man could be, straight and swift
and strong. He was the fulfillment of their search for beauty. They had no wish to
create some fantasy shaped in their own minds. All the art and all the thought of
Greece centered on human beings.
045
Genius is similar to biological evolution in that it requires the unpredictable
generation of a large quantity of alternatives and conjectures. From this
quantity of alternatives and conjectures, the genius retains the best ideas for
further development and communication. An important aspect of this theory
is that you need some means of producing variation in your ideas and for this
variation to be truly effective, it must be blind.

One of the great risks of writing is that even the simplest of choices regarding
wording or punctuation can sometimes _____________________ in ways that
may seem unfair. For example, look again at the old grammar rule forbidding
the splitting of infinitives. After decades of telling students to never split an
infinitive (something just done in this sentence), most composition experts now
acknowledge that a split infinitive is not a grammar crime. Suppose you have
written a position paper trying to convince your city council of the need to hire
security personnel for the library, and half of the council members ― the people
you wish to convince ― remember their eighth-grade grammar teacher’s warning
about splitting infinitives. How will they respond when you tell them, in your
introduction, that librarians are compelled “to always accompany” visitors to the
rare book room because of the threat of damage? How much of their attention
have you suddenly lost because of their automatic recollection of what is now
a nonrule? It is possible, in other words, to write correctly and still offend your
readers’ notions of your language competence.

According to many sociologists, the study of what our society calls ‘art’ can
only really progress if we drop the highly specific and ideologically loaded
terminology of ‘art’, ‘artworks’ and ‘artists’, and replace these with the more
neutral and less historically specific terms ‘cultural forms’, ‘cultural products’
and ‘cultural producers’. These cultural products ― be they paintings, sculptures,
forms of music or whatever ― should be regarded as being made by certain
types of cultural producer, and as being used by particular groups of people in
particular ways in specific social contexts. By using the more neutral term ‘cultural
products’ for particular objects, and ‘cultural producers’ for the people who make
those objects, the sociologist seeks to break with a view that she/he sees as having
dominated the study of cultural forms for too long, namely trying to understand
everything in terms of the category ‘art’. This is a category that is too limited and
context-specific to encompass all the different cultural products that people in
different societies make and use. It is a term that is also too loaded to take at face
value and to use naively in study of our own society. Since it is in the interests
of certain social groups to define some things as ‘art’ and others as not, the very
term ‘art’ itself cannot be uncritically used by the sociologist who wishes to
understand how and why such labelling processes occur. Quite simply, then, in
order to study cultural matters, many sociologists believe one has to __________
the terms ‘art’, ‘artwork’ and ‘artist’ as the basis for our analysis. Instead, these
terms become important objects of analysis themselves.

Long before Walt Whitman wrote Leaves of Grass, poets had addressed
themselves to fame. Horace, Petrarch, Shakespeare, Milton, and Keats all hoped
that poetic greatness would grant them a kind of earthly immortality. Whitman
held a similar faith that for centuries the world would value his poems. But to
this ancient desire to live forever on the page, he added a new sense of fame.
Readers would not simply attend to the poet’s work; they would be attracted to
the greatness of his personality. They would see in his poems a vibrant cultural
performance, an individual springing from the book with tremendous charisma
and appeal. Out of the political rallies and electoral parades that marked
Jacksonian America, Whitman defined poetic fame in relation to the crowd. Other
poets might look for their inspiration from the goddess of poetry. Whitman’s poet

fame would be dependent on celebrity, on the degree to which the people
rejoiced in the poet and his work.

While the eye sees at the surface, the ear tends to penetrate below the surface.
Joachim-Ernst Berendt points out that the ear is the only sense that (A)[fuses /
replaces] an ability to measure with an ability to judge. We can discern different
colors, but we can give a precise number to different sounds. Our eyes do not
let us perceive with this kind of (B)[diversity / precision]. An unmusical person
can recognize an octave and, perhaps once instructed, a quality of tone, that is,
a C or an F-sharp. Berendt points out that there are few ‘acoustical illusions’ ―
something sounding like something that in fact it is not ― while there are many
optical illusions. The ears do not lie. The sense of hearing gives us a remarkable
connection with the invisible, underlying order of things. Through our ears
we gain access to vibration, which (C)[underlies / undermines] everything
around us. The sense of tone and music in another’s voice gives us an enormous
amount of information about that person, about her stance toward life, about her
intentions.

If you don’t get the kind of information failure provides, you’ll end up with
unrealistic expectations for yourself, explains a psychologist. You could wind up
in a position where failure, which has gathered under cover of darkness, reveals
itself all at once. We should hope, then, for exposure to failure, early and often.
The sociologist Glen Elder proposed that there is a sensitive period for growth
― late teens through early 30s ― during which failures are most beneficial. Such
a pattern seems to promote the trait sometimes called equanimity. We learn that
trauma is survivable, so we don’t plunge too deeply following setbacks. Nor,
conversely, do we soar too high on our successes. Some businesses in Silicon
Valley and on Wall Street make a point of hiring ex-pro athletes to their staffs.
It’s not just that their high profile draws business. It’s because athletes are good
at recovering from their failures. “We needed people who could perform and
not get emotionally attached to losses,” a Chicago oil trader told the New York
Times, explaining why the firm likes athletes on the trading floor, particularly
in ugly economic times like these. The image is of a rider easy in the saddle.
Nothing can so surprise her — either for good or ill — that she’ll be knocked

enhancing the expected pleasure from the selected option and decreasing the

likely second-guess ourselves to the point of insanity. We would ask ourselves

You can’t have a democracy if you can’t talk with your neighbors about matters
of mutual interest or concern. Thomas Jefferson, who had an enduring interest
in democracy, came to a similar conclusion. He was prescient in understanding
the dangers of (A) [concentrated / limited] power, whether in corporations or
in political leaders or exclusionary political institutions. Direct involvement of
citizens was what had made the American Revolution possible and given the
new republic vitality and hope for the future. Without that involvement, the
republic would die. Eventually, he saw a need for the nation to be (B) [blended

could participate directly in the political process. The representatives for each
ward in the capital would have to be (C) [resistant / responsive] to citizens

provide the active basic unit for the democratic life of the republic. With that
kind of involvement, the republic might survive and prosper.

physical environment and setting for a particular social ritual such as traveling
by train or going to the theater, as well as the symbolic setting. The meaning of
buildings evolves and becomes established by experience and we in turn read our
experience into buildings. Buildings arouse an empathetic reaction in us through
these projected experiences, and the strength of these reactions is determined by
our culture, our beliefs, and our expectations. They tell stories, for their form and
spatial organization give us hints about how they should be used. Their physical
layout encourages some uses and inhibits others; we do not go backstage in a

involved in the legal process is an integral part of the design and an essential part

Grief is unpleasant. Would one not then be better off without it altogether?
Why accept it even when the loss is real? Perhaps we should say of it what
Spinoza said of regret: that whoever feels it is “twice unhappy or twice helpless.”
Laurence Thomas has suggested that the utility of “negative sentiments”
(emotions like grief, guilt, resentment, and anger, which there is seemingly
a reason to believe we might be better off without) lies in their providing a
kind of guarantee of authenticity for such dispositional sentiments as love and
respect. No occurrent feelings of love and respect need to be present throughout
the period in which it is true that one loves or respects. One might therefore

Duration refers to the time that events last. If we think of tempo as the speed
of events, then duration is the speed of the clock itself. For the physicist, the
duration of a “second” is precise and unambiguous: it is equal to 9,192,631,770
cycles of the frequency associated with the transition between two energy levels
of the isotope cesium-133. In the realm of psychological experience, however,
quantifying units of time is a considerably clumsier operation. When people are
removed from the cues of “real” time ─ be it the sun, bodily fatigue, or timepieces
themselves ─ it doesn’ take long before their time sense breaks down. And it is
this usually (A) psychological clock, as opposed to the time on one’ watch,
that creates the perception of duration that people experience. Theoretically, a
person who mentally stretches the duration of time should experience a slower
tempo. Imagine, for example, that baseballs are pitched to two different batters.
The balls are thrown every 5 seconds for 50 seconds, so a total of 10 balls are
thrown. We now ask both batters how much time has passed. Let’ say that
batter number one (who loves hitting) feels the duration to be 40 seconds. Batter
number two (bored by baseball) believes it to be 60 seconds. Psychologically,
then, the first person has experienced baseballs approaching every four seconds
while the second sees it as every six seconds. The perceived tempo, in other
words, is (B) for batter number one.

Mathematics will attract those it can attract, but it will do nothing to overcome
resistance to science. Science is universal in principle but in practice it speaks to
very few. Mathematics may be considered a communication skill of the highest
type, frictionless so to speak; and at the opposite pole from mathematics, the
fruits of science show the practical benefits of science without the use of words.
But those fruits are ambivalent. Science as science does not speak; ideally, all
scientific concepts are mathematized when scientists communicate with one
another, and when science displays its products to non-scientists it need not, and
indeed is not able to, resort to salesmanship. When science speaks to others, it is

It can be difficult to decide the place of fine art, such as oil paintings,
watercolours, sketches or sculptures, in an archival institution.
(A) The best archival decisions about art do not focus on territoriality (this object
belongs in my institution even though I do not have the resources to care for
it) or on questions of monetary value or prestige (this object raises the cultural
standing of my institution). The best decisions focus on what evidential value
exists and what is best for the item.
(B) But art can also carry aesthetic value, which elevates the job of evaluation into
another realm. Aesthetic value and the notion of artistic beauty are important
considerations, but they are not what motivates archival preservation in the
first instance.
(C) Art can serve as documentary evidence, especially when the items were
produced before photography became common. Sketches of soldiers on
a battlefield, paintings of English country villages or portraits of Dutch
townspeople can provide the only visual evidence of a long-ago place, person
or time. [3점]

A sovereign state is usually defined as one whose citizens are free to determine
their own affairs without interference from any agency beyond its territorial
borders.
(A) No citizen could be a full member of the community so long as she was tied
to ancestral traditions with which the community might wish to break ― the
problem of Antigone in Sophocles’ tragedy. Sovereignty and citizenship thus
require not only borders in space, but also borders in time.
(B) Sovereignty and citizenship require freedom from the past at least as much
as freedom from contemporary powers. No state could be sovereign if its
inhabitants lacked the ability to change a course of action adopted by their
forefathers in the past, or even one to which they once committed themselves.
(C) But freedom in space (and limits on its territorial extent) is merely one
characteristic of sovereignty. Freedom in time (and limits on its temporal
extent) is equally important and probably more fundamental.

(A) The determinist, then, assumes that everything that occurs is a function of a
finite number of causes and that, if these causes were known, an event could be
predicted with complete accuracy. However, knowing all causes of an event is
not necessary; the determinist simply assumes that they exist and that as more
causes are known, predictions become more accurate.
(B) The assumption that what is being studied can be understood in terms of
causal laws is called determinism. Richard Taylor defined determinism as the
philosophical doctrine that “states that for everything that ever happens there
are conditions such that, given them, nothing else could happen.”
(C) For example, almost everyone would agree that the weather is a function of
a finite number of variables such as sunspots, high-altitude jet streams, and
barometric pressure; yet weather forecasts are always probabilistic because
many of these variables change constantly, and others are simply unknown.

(A) Likewise, if there are things you can’t recall, your schemata will fill in the gaps
with knowledge about what’s typical in that situation. As a result, a reliance on
schemata will inevitably make the world seem more “normal” than it really is
and will make the past seem more “regular” than it actually was.
(B) Any reliance on schematic knowledge, therefore, will be shaped by this
information about what’s “normal.” Thus, if there are things you don’t notice
while viewing a situation or event, your schemata will lead you to fill in these
“gaps” with knowledge about what’s normally in place in that setting.
(C) But schematic knowledge can also hurt you, promoting errors in perception
and memory. Moreover, the types of errors produced by schemata are quite
predictable: Bear in mind that schemata summarize the broad pattern of your
experience, and so they tell you, in essence, what’s typical or ordinary in a
given situation.

Promoting attractive images of one’s country is not new, but the conditions for
trying to create soft power have changed dramatically in recent years. For one
thing, nearly half the countries in the world are now democracies.
Most of us have a general, rational sense of what to eat and when ― there is no
shortage of information on the subject.
(A) Emotional eating is a popular term used to describe eating that is influenced
by emotions, both positive and negative. Feelings may affect various aspects
of your eating, including your motivation to eat, your food choices, where
and with whom you eat, and the speed at which you eat. Most overeating is
prompted by feelings rather than physical hunger.
(B) Yet there is often a disconnect between what we know and what we do. We
may have the facts, but decisions also involve our feelings. Many people who
struggle with difficult emotions also struggle with eating problems.
(C) Individuals who struggle with obesity tend to eat in response to emotions.
However, people who eat for emotional reasons are not necessarily overweight.
People of any size may try to escape an emotional experience by preoccupying
themselves with eating or by obsessing over their shape and weight.

those which are unsuccessful have suffered extinction. This accumulation of
adaptive habits is passed on to the child; he does not simply learn through

(B) It may be added that in any society an individual learns only a small portion
of his cultural habits by free trialanderror, for in this way he would learn only
those habits which were most rewarding to him and to him alone.
(C) Such indiscriminate and selfish learning cannot be allowed by society; the
individual must learn behavior which is specified in the culture as being correct
or best. Such behavior is, of course, the result of the learning process as carried
on by previous generations.

are key. To read and write like historians, students need to understand that
they are reading arguments rather than truth when they read historical text.
(B) They believe historians write down exactly what happened. In the discussion,
however, they soon come to realize that that is an inadequate description—
because historians search for many different accounts of what happened, and
they begin to view them as synthesizers.
(C) Some subsequently start to shift their opinions to note that historians need to

If they keep on discussing the issue, some will even come to recognize that
historians have their own viewpoints and biases that influence their final
interpretation.

(B) Even though you were looking at the words, you apparently were not paying

occur independently of eye movements.
(C) We can pay attention to things that are not directly in our line of vision, as

The evolution in the West from the late seventeenth century onwards of the
idea of the aesthetic in music produced musical forms which were specifically
intended to be listened to by a knowledgeable public and performed only by
experts and masters.
(A) To this extent, it can be claimed that most cultures, if not all of them, have both
communal musicmaking where everyone participates and where the notion
of musical talent is irrelevant, and special ritual and ceremonial music where
only the specially talented and trained perform, and where the rest listen and
participate as observers.
(B) In addition to such events, there was also communal musicmaking, especially
at festivals such as the Winter Solstice, Harvest time, Spring time, and other
secular celebrations where everyone participated. Music in the Christian church
is similarly organised with communally sung hymns, anthems, and other
liturgical items sung by the specially trained choir.

to contemplate the musical aesthetic as they listened. It is from this tradition
that the instrumental and vocal forms of modern western music have evolved.

A modern tragedy is that we are losing naturalists as the old ones die off or
retire and few new recruits are trained or hired. Schools and universities are
eliminating field trips and field-based courses.
(A) This trend worries me, because a society that values nature only for its
utilitarian worth is not likely to care much about the extinction of species or the
loss and degradation of natural communities that offer no tangible services.
(B) At the same time, major conservation organizations have shifted away from
natural history and even from protecting biodiversity as a primary goal.
Instead, they have moved into the vaguely defined territory of “ecosystem
services,” where nature is valued for its functional and economic services to
human society, not for its beauty, fascinating peculiarities, or inherent dignity.
(C) As extinction rates increase, so does the urgency of restoring natural history to
its rightful place in science and conservation — at least on a par with concern
for ecosystem services. Biodiversity and ecosystem services are complementary
and should not be placed in competition with each other on the conservation
agenda.

decisions by their nature present great complexity, whose many variables must come
together a certain way for the leader to succeed. ( ② ) Alternatively, the leader’s
information might be only fragmentary, which might cause her to fill in the gaps with
assumptions ― sometimes without recognizing them as such.
( ③ ) And the merits of a leader’s most important decisions, by their nature, typically
are not clear-cut. ( ④ ) Instead those decisions involve a process of assigning weights
to competing interests, and then determining, based upon some criterion, which one
predominates. ( ⑤ ) The result is one of judgment, of shades of gray; like saying that
Beethoven is a better composer than Brahms. [3점]

So, there was a social pressure for art to come up with some vocation that both
distinguished it from science and, at the same time, made it equal in stature to
science.
Representational theories of art treat the work of the artist as similar to that of the
scientist. Both, so to speak, are involved in describing the external world. ( ① ) But
by the nineteenth century, any comparison between the scientist and the artist was
bound to make the artist look like a poor relation in terms of making discoveries
about the world or holding a mirror up to nature. ( ② ) Here, science clearly had
the edge. ( ③ ) The notion that art specialized in the expression of the emotions
was particularly attractive in this light. ( ④ ) It rendered unto science its own ― the
exploration of the objective world ― while saving something comparably important
for art to do ― to explore the inner world of feeling. ( ⑤ ) If science held the mirror
up to nature, art turned a mirror at the self and its experiences.

Rather, happiness is often found in those moments we are most vulnerable, alone
or in pain.
We seek out feel-good experiences, always on the lookout for the next holiday,
purchase or culinary experience. This approach to happiness is relatively recent; it
depends on our capacity both to pad our lives with material pleasures and to feel
that we can control our suffering. ( ① ) Painkillers, as we know them today, are a
relatively recent invention and access to material comfort is now within reach of a
much larger proportion of the world’s population. ( ② ) These technological and
economic advances have had significant cultural implications, leading us to see our
negative experiences as a problem and maximizing our positive experiences as the
answer. ( ③ ) Yet, through this we have forgotten that being happy in life is not just
about pleasure. ( ④ ) Comfort, contentment and satisfaction have never been the
elixir of happiness. ( ⑤ ) Happiness is there, on the edges of these experiences, and
when we get a glimpse of that kind of happiness it is powerful, transcendent and
compelling.

That puts you each near a focus, a special point at which the sound of your voice
gets focused as it reflects off the passageway’s curved walls and ceiling.
Whispering galleries are remarkable acoustic spaces found beneath certain domes
or curved ceilings. A famous one is located outside a well-known restaurant in New
York City’s Grand Central Station. ( ① ) It’s a fun place to take a date:the two of you
can exchange romantic words while you’re forty feet apart and separated by a busy
passageway. ( ② ) You’ll hear each other clearly, but the passersby won’t hear a word
you’re saying. ( ③ ) To produce this effect, the two of you should stand at diagonally
opposite corners of the space, facing the wall. ( ④ ) Ordinarily, the sound waves you
produce travel in all directions and bounce off the walls at different times and places,
scrambling them so much that they are inaudible when they arrive at the ear of a
listener forty feet away. ( ⑤ ) But when you whisper at a focus, the reflected waves all
arrive at the same time at the other focus, thus reinforcing one another and allowing
your words to be heard.

A round hill rising above a plain, therefore, would appear on the map as a set of
concentric circles, the largest at the base and the smallest near the top.
A major challenge for map-makers is the depiction of hills and valleys, slopes and
flatlands collectively called the topography. This can be done in various ways. One
is to create an image of sunlight and shadow so that wrinkles of the topography are
alternately lit and shaded, creating a visual representation of the shape of the land.
( ① ) Another, technically more accurate way is to draw contour lines. ( ② ) A
contour line connects all points that lie at the same elevation. ( ③ ) When the contour
lines are positioned closely together, the hill’s slope is steep; if they lie farther apart,
the slope is gentler. ( ④ ) Contour lines can represent scarps, hollows, and valleys of
the local topography. ( ⑤ ) At a glance, they reveal whether the relief in the mapped
area is great or small: a “busy” contour map means lots of high relief.

Experiments show that rats display an immediate liking for salt the first time
they experience a salt deficiency.
Both humans and rats have evolved taste preferences for sweet foods, which provide
rich sources of calories. A study of food preferences among the Hadza hunter-
gatherers of Tanzania found that honey was the most highly preferred food item,
an item that has the highest caloric value. ( ① ) Human newborn infants also show
a strong preference for sweet liquids. ( ② ) Both humans and rats dislike bitter and
sour foods, which tend to contain toxins. ( ③ ) They also adaptively adjust their
eating behavior in response to deficits in water, calories, and salt. ( ④ ) They likewise

Some people think that the ‘democratization of knowledge’ made possible by the
Internet means that we no longer need to rely on experts and can appeal directly
to the collective intelligence of amateurs. (①) As evidence for this, they point to
the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia—which is written largely by amateurs. (②) Its
science articles, in particular, are said to be remarkably accurate. (③) Moreover, the
much-vaunted accuracy of its articles can itself only be judged by experts. (④) This
is not to criticize Wikipedia, but to point out that there is no escape from appealing to

a bad place to end it.

In humans, body clocks are responsible for daily changes in blood pressure, body
temperature, hormones, hunger, and thirst, as well as our sleep-wake cycles. ( ① )
These biological rhythms, which we experience as internal time, are probably older
than sleep, developed over the course of millions of years of evolution. ( ② ) They
facilitate physiological and behavioral changes on a roughly twenty-four-hour cycle
no matter what is happening outside, whether a cold front moves in or clouds block
the light of the sun. ( ③ ) Their internal clocks continue to run in accordance with
the place they left behind, not the one to which they have come, and it can take some
time to realign the two. ( ④ ) The most remarkable thing is that our internal body
clocks can be readjusted by environmental cues. ( ⑤ ) We may get jet lag for a few

But ritual of a danced and possibly ecstatic nature, was central to their lives.
Clearly, danced rituals did not seem like a waste of energy to prehistoric peoples.
They took the time to fashion masks and costumes. (①) They joyfully burned calories
in the execution of the dance; they preferred to record these scenes over any other
group activity. (②) Thus anthropologist Victor Turner’s attribution of danced ritual
to an occasional, marginal, or liminal status seems especially unjustified in the
prehistoric case. (③) And it seems more representative of the production-oriented
mentality of our own industrial age than of prehistoric priorities. (④) Surely these
people knew hardship and were often threatened by food shortages, disease, and
wild animals. (⑤) Perhaps only because our own lives, so much easier in many ways,
are also so constrained by the imperative to work, we have to wonder why.

Fear stems from an immediate threat that you experience with your senses; for
example, you turn a corner and see a large, growling dog charging toward you.
Anxiety, on the other hand, stems from a mental event. ( ①) For example, it may
come from thinking about the possibility of a large, menacing dog around the next
corner. (②) Sometimes an element of anxiety can be triggered by an external physical
event through a mechanism known as apperception. (③) This happens when we
perceive new experiences through the lens of unremembered past experience and
then react to a relatively benign physical event as though it were a threat. (④) Using
the example above, you may experience any dog as threatening even if you can’t

dogs, the body responds to the thought of a charging dog just as it would an actual

Online communities provide social and political outlets that were not possible before

of the GDP in 2052. Much of this investment will be in energy-efficient goods that are
more expensive than old-fashioned stuff designed for an era of cheap energy.
( ① ) Another share will be invested in the shift from coal to more expensive fuels,
like conventional gas. ( ② ) Some will go into the construction of new renewable
energy supply, even during the years before it becomes competitive. ( ③ ) And a lot
will go into repair of climate damage or adaptation to future climate damage ─ for
example, investing in new protective walls along the coast to keep the rising ocean

was left to the market. ( ⑤ ) It will be either direct, when the government invests the
tax dollars in whatever capacity it considers to be most necessary, or indirect, when
the government passes legislation that makes the desired activity more profitable.
Courbet broke with this tradition and provided art history with its first public
scandal with the painting “Burial at Ornans.”
Parallel to new trends in the natural sciences and humanities, the realists focused
on fact and perception, thus rejecting art that was based only on imaginary worlds.
( ① ) However, they never sought to simply imitate reality since that would
have been easier with photography, which had just recently been invented. ( ② )
Instead, painters like Gustave Courbet, Adolf von Menzel, Jean‒rançis Millet, and
HonoréDaumier wanted to illustrate social conditions within their art. ( ③ ) In
particular, artists chose motifs taken from industrial and rural worlds of life and
labor. ( ④ ) Previously, these subjects had been handled at most in small, anecdotal
genre paintings. ( ⑤ ) It portrayed an ordinary funeral and the rural mourners on a

On the other hand, many of the germs that live in or on the bodies of all animals,

stimulant or nutritional effects.
Whatever the benefit to a virus of a longlived host, there is no guarantee that hosts
have mechanisms for increasing longevity that the virus could exploit. Nor need host
longevity be an advantage. ( ① ) The interests of the virus depend on its lifecycle
strategy, and some viruses are only released on the death of the host. ( ② ) In fact,
many parasites actually force their host to attack other potential hosts or to be killed
or eaten so that the parasites are passed on. ( ③ ) In some ways, this can be seen as
a form of life extension because removing the germs could have drastic, possibly

The distraction hypothesis, however, raises the possibility that humor could
successfully attract attention but distract consumers from processing and
remembering the information, claims, or arguments in an advertisement.
This is why it is important for you to be able to explain how there can be overall
scientific consensus while discrete areas of argument still exist.
While it may be distressing to scientists who would rather avoid public disputes—it’s
true—conflict and controversy sell. ( ① ) It isn’t that journalists are always trying to

Historians are concerned with contingency ― the free will of humans to shape their
own destinies. As historian David Hackett Fischer notes, people’s choices matter.
( ① ) It is the historian’s task to explain the way people are driven to break free from
their circumstances and the social and cultural forces that hold them in place. ( ② )
History is thus told as a narrative ― an often exciting and heroic one ― of individual
choices made by humans through time. ( ③ ) Fatalism and determinism are
philosophical or religious systems that teach that human behavior is controlled by
forces — fate or the order of the universe — that are outside the control of humans.
( ④ ) Actually it is undeniable that we are all products of the macro-level cultural or
structural contexts that have shaped the world into which we have been born. ( ⑤ )
Any proponent of contingency would accept that, but in the end historians are in the
business of explaining why people — as active human agents — have behaved in the
past in the way that they did.

Navajo sandpaintings are created as part of a healing ritual. These colorful, crushed
rock designs are destroyed at the end of the ceremony. Navajo tradition prohibits
their preservation or fixed replication. ( ① ) Although these ceremonial artifacts
are aesthetically complex and rewarding, they are not produced as works of art.
( ② ) Hence, a sandpainting produced for display or sale is inherently inauthentic
with respect to Navajo tradition. ( ③ ) Respecting this tradition, Navajos who
create sandpaintings for non-ritual display will intentionally alter them from their
“authentic,” ritual-specific counterparts. ( ④ ) However, many collectors and
art dealers believe that stylistic authenticity is insufficient. Authenticity requires

objects of aesthetic appreciation.

speedy writing of great works by Mozart or Mendelssohn, we might think that this
speed was of the composing power as well as of pen, but, in fact, such was seldom
the case. ( ③ ) These great musicians generally did their composition mentally

For a long time, tourism was seen as a huge monster invading the areas of
indigenous peoples, introducing them to the evils of the modern world. However,
research has shown that this is not the correct way to perceive it. In most places,
tourists are welcome and indigenous people see tourism as a path to modernity
and economic development. But such development is always a two-edged sword.
Tourism can mean progress, but most often also means the loss of traditions and
cultural uniqueness. And, of course, there are examples of ‘cultural pollution’,
‘vulgarization’ and ‘phony-folk-cultures’. The background for such characteristics
is often more or less romantic and the normative ideas of a former or prevailing
authenticity. Ideally (to some) there should exist ancient cultures for modern
consumers to gaze at, or even step into for a while, while travelling or on holiday.
This is a cage model that is difficult to defend in a global world where we all,
indigenous or not, are part of the same social fabric.
Many companies confuse activities and results. As a consequence, they make the
mistake of designing a process that sets out milestones in the form of activities

activity, and activity was what it got. Salespeople have done what was asked for.

Most people who try to slow down put the proverbial cart before the horse. They
make dramatic, often costly changes in their lifestyle, only to encounter two
disappointing results. First, they don’t enjoy the changes they make. People who
are temperamentally used to a fastpaced life quickly discover that a slowerpaced
life in the country all but drives them crazy. Their habitual, hectic thinking won’t
allow them to adjust the superficial changes they make. Second, lifestyle changes
alone rarely make a real difference. You can rearrange the externals of your life in
a radically different way, but you always take your thinking with you. If you are
a hurried, rushed person in the city, you’ll also be a hurried, rushed person in the
country. To mend the problem, you should slow down your life from the inside
out.

Think of the world as a premature baby in an incubator. The baby’s health status
is extremely bad and her breathing, heart rate, and other important signs are
tracked constantly so that changes for better or worse can quickly be seen. After
a week, she is getting a lot better. On all the main measures, she is improving,
but she still has to stay in the incubator because her health is still critical. Does it
make sense to say that the infant’s situation is improving? Yes. Absolutely. Does it
make sense to say it is bad? Yes. Absolutely. Does saying “things are improving”
imply that everything is fine, and we should all relax and not worry? No, not at
all. Is it helpful to have to choose between bad and improving? Definitely not. It’s
both. That is how we must think about the current state of the world.
We don’t want people to live like us, Americans, anymore. We have to take the
lead in redesigning and reinventing what living like us means — what constitutes
the “American way” in energy and resource consumption terms. Because if the
spread of freedom and free markets is not accompanied by a new approach
to how we produce energy and treat the environment — Code Green — then
Mother Nature and planet earth will impose their own constraints and limits on
our way of life — constraints and limits that will be worse than Communism.
That is why it is essential going forward that a Code Green strategy be included
in America’s gift bag to the world today, right along with the Bill of Rights, the
Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution. Because without it, we are
not going to be free much longer — and neither will anybody else. There will
be too many Americans — old-style Americans. And the earth can’t handle that
situation.
What happens when students get the message that saying the wrong thing can
get you in trouble? They do what one would expect: they talk to people they
already agree with, keep their mouths shut about important topics in mixed
company, and often don’t bother even arguing with the angriest or loudest person
in the room. The result is a group polarization that follows graduates into the
real world. As the sociologist Diana C. Mutz discovered in her book Hearing the
Other Side , those with the highest levels of education have the lowest exposure
to people with conflicting points of view, while those who have not graduated
from high school can claim the most diverse discussion mates. In other words,
those most likely to live in the tightest echo chambers are those with the highest
level of education. It should be the opposite, shouldn’t it? A good education
ought to teach citizens to actively seek out the opinions of intelligent people with
whom they disagree, in order to prevent the problem of “confirmation bias.”
Biological organisms, including human societies both with and without market
systems, discount distant outputs over those available at the present time
based on risks associated with an uncertain future. As the timing of inputs
and outputs varies greatly depending on the type of energy, there is a strong
case to incorporate time when assessing energy alternatives. For example, the
energy output from solar panels or wind power engines, where most investment
happens before they begin producing, may need to be assessed differently when
compared to most fossil fuel extraction technologies, where a large proportion
of the energy output comes much sooner, and a larger (relative) proportion of
inputs is applied during the extraction process, and not upfront. Thus fossil fuels,
particularly oil and natural gas, in addition to having energy quality advantages
(cost, storability, transportability, etc.) over many renewable technologies, also
have a “temporal advantage” after accounting for human behavioral preference
for current consumption/return.
* upfront: 선행 투자의
Due to the fact that people tend to favor more (A) outputs, fossil fuels are
more (B) than renewable energy alternatives in regards to the distance
between inputs and outputs.

The weakness of local networks lies in their self-containment, for they lack input
as well as outreach. In a classic study of urban politics, Herbert Gans found that
neighborhoods with the highest levels of solidarity often were unable to block
unfavorable policies and programs for lack of ties to possible allies elsewhere in
the city. It was for this reason that Gans referred to them as “urban villagers.” As
the opposite of local networks, cosmopolitan networks offer little solidarity and
have little capacity to comfort and sustain members. But members benefit from
a constant flow of new information and from the great reach of their influence,
even if it tends to be somewhat lacking in strength. Local networks tend to be
small. In contrast, cosmopolitan networks can be huge. Thus, while the “urban
villagers” lacked ties even to their local city government, cosmopolitan network
ties often lead into the White House.
Unlike the “urban villagers,”whose (A) ties to the outside restrict them
within their boundaries, cosmopolitan networks (B) from exposure to new
information and a more extensive range of relationships.

Mediation is a process that has much in common with advocacy but is also
crucially different. It parallels advocacy in so far as it tends to involve a process
of negotiation, but differs in so far as mediation involves adopting a neutral role
between two opposing parties rather than taking up the case of one party against
another. At times, particularly in very complex situations, the processes of
advocacy and mediation can overlap, perhaps with very problematic results, as
one loses clarity over his or her role. It is therefore important, if not essential, to
maintain a clear focus in undertaking advocacy or mediation in order to ensure
that the roles do not become blurred and therefore potentially counterproductive.
For example, a mediator who ‘takes sides’ is likely to lose all credibility, as is an
advocate who seeks to adopt a neutral position.
Although both deal with negotiation, a mediator needs to maintain (A) and
an advocate partiality in order to (B) crossing over into each other’ role.

Unlike the modern society, the primitive society has less specialized knowledge
to transmit, and since its way of life is enacted before the eyes of all, it has no
need to create a separate institution of education such as the school. Instead, the
child acquires the heritage of his culture by observing and imitating adults in
such activities as rituals, hunts, festivals, cultivation, and harvesting. As a result,
there is little or none of that alienation of young from old so marked in modern
industrial societies.
A further reason for this alienation in modern societies is that in his conception
of reality the modern adult owes less to his direct experience and more to the
experience of his culture than does primitive man. Clearly, his debt to culture will
vary with the nature of his education.
Hence, the contemporary child must travel much further than the offspring of
primitive man to acquire the world view of his elders. He is, therefore, that much
more removed from the adults of his society.
Unlike the primitive child who learns from his (A) surroundings, the modern
child learns in educational institutions, which results in (B) from his elders.
