Executive Summary of the Test Results (Ferro-Scan, UPV & CORE TEST)
 We have performed rebar scanning using Ferro-Scan at Eight (08) spots to know the existing
rebar diameter & quantity. Among the Eight one scan was done at 2 nd floor Beam, four scan
was done for columns at 1st floor & one scan was done at ground floor column. We found
that the beam has one layer of reinforcement with 3#6 Dia (19mm) bar. However For the all
the five columns has 8#6 bar (three bars in each face, see detail reports). We performed two
line scan at 1st floor columns for tie bar spacing. We found the tie bar of columns are spaced
at 8” to 9” spacing. To verify the existing design drawings we also performed several spot scan
(at beams & columns) to know the rebar quantity. From scan results we found that all these
columns has 8 bar (three bars in each face) and for beams some has 3 bars (main beams) and
some has two bars (secondary) in one layer only. In the structural design drawings we found
three types of columns (CF1, CF2 & CF3). For CF1 there are 4#6 & 2#5 bar (Total 6 bar), for
CF2 there are 6#6 bar (Total 6 bar) & for CF3 there are 4#6 &4#5 (Total 8 bar). Whereas in all
the scanned columns we found 8 bars and it seems from scanning all the bars are in equal
diameter.

 We have performed Non-Destructive concrete strength test by Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity at

Ten (10) spots. This test was done basically to get the concrete strength where core cut is not
possible. Most of the test was done in columns and beams. The result shows the average
concrete strength is 2500- 2900 psi.

 Previously we cut core of 43.5 mm (1.71”) diameter from this building (see appendix for previous
report) and found concrete strength results 1650 psi for this building. After getting instructed from
BUET & Accord we again cut four core of 100mm (3.94”) diameter in beam and found approximately
2667 psi strength (using results of four new core). However we cut core from two columns from 1st
floor 67mm (2.64”) & 72mm (2.83”) diameter. The strength is 2250 psi & 1640 psi. we found the
concrete strength for column is 1513 psi (using two results from previous report and two from new
report). This lower value may cause due to lower diameter of core. (See NDT & DT results in
Appendix-I). We were unable to cut larger dia than 2.83” due to the closer reinforcement spacing.

 We explored two foundation CF1 & CF3. In the structural design drawings the size of CF1
foundation is 6’-0”X6’-0”, Thickness 9” to max 15” (sloped) & foundation depth is 5’-0”. But
after exploration we found its size is 5’-0”X5’-0”, thickness is 13” uniform and foundation
depth from PL is 5’-0”. However for the CF3 foundation the design drawings shows its size is
7’-0”X7’-0”, Thickness 12” to max 20” (sloped) & foundation depth is 5’-0”. After exploration
we found its size is 7’-0”X7’-0”, thickness is 15” uniform and foundation depth from PL is 5’-
0”. So for both of the foundation the thickness is less than the structural drawings shows.
However we further explored to the foundation CF3 we found 2 piles of 8.5” diameter. Those
two piles were spaced at 25” center to center.

 We consulted with the building owner they informed us that there are 20 piles of 20’ length
below each of the footing. As it is not feasible to verify this information & we found two piles,
we are considering our analysis based on this information stated above.

2.1 Fundamental principle

A pulse of longitudinal vibrations is produced by an electro-acoustical transducer, which is held in

contact with one surface of the concrete under test. When the pulse generated is transmitted into
the concrete from the transducer using a liquid coupling material such as grease or cellulose paste, it
undergoes multiple reflections at the boundaries of the different material phases within the concrete.
A complex system of stress waves develops, which include both longitudinal and shear waves, and
propagates through the concrete. The first waves to reach the receiving transducer are the
longitudinal waves, which are converted into an electrical signal by a second transducer. Electronic
timing circuits enable the transit time T of the pulse to be measured.

Longitudinal pulse velocity (in km/s or m/s) is given by:

v L /T

Where,

v is the longitudinal pulse velocity,

L is the path length,
T is the time taken by the pulse to traverse that length.

2.2 Equipment for pulse velocity test

The equipment consists essentially of an electrical pulse generator, a pair of transducers, an amplifier
and an electronic timing device for measuring the time interval between the initiation of a pulse
generated at the transmitting transducer and its arrival at the receiving transducer. Two forms of
electronic timing apparatus and display are available, one of which uses a cathode ray tube on which
the received pulse is displayed in relation to a suitable time scale, the other uses an interval timer
with a direct reading digital display.

The equipment should have the following characteristics. It should be capable of measuring transit
time over path lengths ranging from about 100 mm to the maximum thickness to be inspected to an
accuracy of ±1%. Generally the transducers used should be in the range of 20 to 150 kHz although
frequencies as low as 10 kHz may be used for very long concrete path lengths and as high as 1 MHz
for mortars and grouts or for short path lengths.

High frequency pulses have a well-defined onset but, as they pass through the concrete, become
attenuated more rapidly than pulses of lower frequency. It is therefore preferable to use high
frequency transducers for short path lengths and low frequency transducers for long path lengths.
Transducers with a frequency of 50 kHz to 60 kHz are suitable for most common applications.

2.3 Measuring with Ultrasonic Instrument

STHAPONA CONSULTANTS 69 | P a g e
[AMITY DESIGN LTD, MAIN BUILDING, H#07] DETAILS
DETAIL ENGINEERING
ENGINEERINGASSESSMENT
ASSESSMENTREPORT
REPORT

The Ultrasonic Instrument can be used for several applications including the following:
 Pulse velocity measurement
 Path length measurement
 Uniformity assessment
 Surface velocity measurement
 Crack depth measurement
 Estimating the dynamic elastic modulus of samples (with the shear wave transducers)
 Ultrasonic Instrument only. Estimating compressive strength using pulse velocity alone or in
combination with a rebound hammer

2.4 Transducer arrangement

Three transducer arrangements are commonly used.

Wherever possible use the direct arrangement as this ensures the maximum signal transmission
between the transducers. The semi-direct arrangement is less sensitive than the direct, but more
sensitive than the indirect arrangement. The path length is the distance between the centers of each
transducer.
The indirect method is particularly useful for determining crack depth, surface quality or in the case
when only one surface is accessible.

2.5 Preparation

Basic preparations are common to each application. The distance (path length) between the
transducers should be measured as accurately as possible. It is very important to ensure adequate
acoustic coupling of the transducers to the surface under test. A thin layer of couplant should be
applied to the transducer and the test surface. In some cases it may be necessary to prepare the
surface by smoothing it.
For compound measurements and uniformity testing a test grid should be drawn out on the surface.

Rebar’s affect the ultrasonic measurements as the signal will travel faster through the rebar than
through the concrete. The location of rebar should be determined.

The standard measuring procedure is:

 Apply the couplant.

STHAPONA CONSULTANTS 70 | P a g e

 Position the transducers.

 Perform the measurement.
 Reposition the transducers (compound measurements only).
 Save the result.

Verification of Existing Foundation’s Size, Depth thickness:

We explored two foundation CF1 & CF3 (blue colored circled in the foundation layout
plan below). In the structural design drawings the size of CF1 foundation is 6’-0”X6’-
0”, Thickness 9” to max 15” (sloped) & foundation depth is 5’-0”. But after exploration
we found its size is 5’-0”X5’-0”, thickness is 13” uniform and foundation depth from
PL is 5’-0”.
However for the CF3 foundation the design drawings shows its size is 7’-0”X7’-0”,
Thickness 12” to max 20” (sloped) & foundation depth is 5’-0”. After exploration we
found its size is 7’-0”X7’-0”, thickness is 15” uniform and foundation depth from PL is
5’-0”.
So for both of the foundation the thickness is less than the structural drawings shows.
However we further explored to the foundation CF3 we found 2 piles of 8.5” diameter.
Those two piles were spaced at 25” center to center. We consulted with the building
owner they informed us that there are 20 piles of 20’ length below each of the footing.
As it is not feasible to verify this information & we found two piles, we are considering
our analysis based on this information stated above.
