Description:
Reading is a cornerstone of a student’s success in school and throughout life. The ability
to read is as vital as any other skills in learning. With this, as part of the aim of the Department
of Education to foster the love for reading, DepEd commemorates the National Reading Month
celebration every November of every school year. The Deped Memorandum 158, series of 2019
seeks to promote reading by providing every learners and teachers an avenue to focus on this
particular area of learning through the conduct of different engaging activities involving reading.
As part of this nationwide program, Leandro G. Japos National High School prepared
different activities that showcased the reading capabilities of the students through activities like
Readers’ Theater, Spoken Word Poetry, Book Character Presentation, Poster Making among
others.
The month-long celebration ended with a program that showcased the students’
prowess in reading with performances by each year level as well as the highlight of the event,
the parade of book characters where students got to wear their favorite characters from books.
Theawarding of prizes to the winners of the said contests were announced during the program.
Objectives:
It is observed that students have become more involved in the activities when
their interests are catered such as in the Book Character Contest which they are given
the chance to dress-up as their favorite book characters. The activity also allowed those
who have not yet achieved mastery in reading to take part in the celebration unlike the
different contests that only allows those who are good at speaking and reading to
participate. The activity allowed itself to be more inclusive of those who are lagging
behind in terms of reading and provide an opportunity for them to promote and express
their love for reading in their own ways.
