OVERVIEW
Reading is the foundation to a learner’s future successes. Every Filipino learner
craves for knowledge and adventure which can be found through reading. The Reading
Month celebrates and promotes ways to help children discover the joys of reading and to
maintain and sustain their infinite enthusiasm to learn.
The title “English Festival” indicates the vast and intertwined path of learning to
read and reading to learn. The program deals with reading that is positively travelled
through the combined efforts of everybody to facilitate the idea that reading is one’s
vehicle to travel in different locations.
Thus, the School-Based English Festival aims to strengthen the appreciation of
students towards reading, engage them to various strategies in reading, and promote
harmonious relationship among parents, teachers and pupils/students.
METHODOLOGY
The participants are the pupils and students who have the potential to join in individual
contests such as Story Telling, Essay Writing, Spelling Bee, Smart Talking, Declamation,
and Oration. However, for group contests, the contests are Reader’s Theater, Jazz Chant,
Speech Choir, Chamber Theater, and Readers’ Kiosk all classes are mandated to join.
Pre Implementation
1. Submission and approval of the project proposal.
2. Identifying the right and good literary pieces and current news.
3. Distribution of literary pieces to the students as well as to the class advisers for
practice and mastery.
During Implementation
1. Monitoring the students practice and performances in individual and group
contests.
2. Identifying the best student/s who effectively manifested the criteria set for future
contests.
3. Submission and analysis of outputs shall be done.
Post Implementation
1. Application of the learned skills from the activity.
2. Monitoring and feedback.
3. Submission of Terminal Report to the division office.

SCHOOL-BASED ENGLISH FESTIVAL
November 5-29, 2019
GENERAL GUIDELINES:
1. All elementary and secondary students officially enrolled in Cristo Rey Integrated
School are eligible to join.
2. Only grade 6 and 10 or 12 students are allowed to join the contest in specific events.
3. Only grade 3 pupils can join the contest in storytelling.
4. No duplication of events per contestant.
5. All contestants should be at the venue thirty (30) minutes before the event starts.
6. The decision of the board of judges is final and irrevocable.
SPECIFIC GUIDELINES/MECHANICS:
1. STORY TELLING CONTEST (Primary Level) – Please see attached Division memo.
2. SPELLING BEE
1. All officially enrolled Grade 6 and 10 or 12 students are eligible to join the
contest.
2. Spelling materials such as 1/8 illustration board, chalk and eraser shall be
provided by the speller.
3. Final briefing of the contestants will be done fifteen (15) minutes before the
event.
4. The event facilitator will signal for the event to begin. Once the contest starts,
the teachers, and classmates are no longer allowed to talk to their contestants to
ensure fairness of the result.
5. The facilitator/bee master will provide ten (10) words for easy, ten (10) words for
average, ten (10) words for difficult and ten (10) words for clincher.
6. Easy words will receive one (1) point, average words will receive two (2) points
and difficult words will receive three (3) points.
7. Easy word will be given ten (10) seconds, Average word will be given twenty (20)
seconds and difficult words will be given thirty (30) seconds.
8. During the contests the pronouncer says the word to be spelled twice. He speaks
slowly and clearly, without distorting the normal pronunciation of the word. He
uses the word in a sentence and says the word again.
9. The speller will listen carefully to the pronouncer and asks for the word to be
repeated if necessary.
10. The spelling of each word will start when the pronouncer says “go” and stops
when the pronouncer says “stop”.
11. The speller will raise their board when the pronouncer says to do so and it will
remain raised after the pronouncer spells the correct spelling of the word and
the speller gets the correct answer. Spellers with misspelled words must put
down their board.
12. Only the top three contestants will be given awards for first place, second place,
and third place.
13. In the event of a tie in any of the top three contestants the event administrator
shall conduct a tie breaker round with a word from the clincher category with the
winner of the round given the place.
9. CHAMBER THEATRE
1. The contest is open to the Grade 10 classes.
2. The contest piece is “_____________” from the English 10 textbook.
3. Costumes and props are allowed.
4. Use music, light or some extra spectacle or theatrical element.
5. Contestants shall not less than five (20) members, maximum of twelve
(25) participants.
6. Performers playing scenes as characters should perform without scripts.
Only the narrator(s) in chamber theatre is (are) required to carry a script
if the narrator is a non-participating witness or a third-person observer
uninvolved in the scenes. Performers may have a dual role, the character
and the narrator.
Criteria for judging:
o Posture, Variety, Creation of Mood
and Vocal Interpretation - 25%
o Posture and projection (Use of movement,
Gesture, and facial expression) - 25%
o Over-all clarity and entertainment of
Performance (Costume and sound effects,
stage presence) - 25%
o Mastery of Piece - 25%

10. ORATION
1. Every section must have at least one (1) representative in this event.
2. A contest piece is entitled “I AM THE YOUTH OF TODAY”.
3. Contestants should wear their school uniform.

o Stage Presence - 10%
o Facial Expression and Gestures - 30%
o Clarity of Voice - 30%
o Pronunciation - 30%
