CASE STUDY
Following is the topic of the brainstorming session:
“How to develop and implement maintenance management for a ship”
Personal Report/Answers:
For me, before brainstorming the topic, I will search for subtopics that are related to the topic.
Because the topic is related to the development of the ship maintenance management and how to
implement it, the subtopics that can be discussed may be about:
1. Industry 4.0
2. Automation
3. Cloud Based
4. Digitalization
5. Digital Twin
6. Remote Based Inspection and Maintenance
7. Predictive Maintenance
8. Condition Based Maintenance
There are many things to consider when developing and implementing maintenance
management for a ship. Before that, we need to know the meaning of maintenance as well as
management. According to BS EN 13306:2010, maintenance is the combination of all technical
and administrative measures as well as measures of management during the entire life-cycle of a
unit to maintain the functional state or rebuild, so that the unit can perform the required function.
Maintenance management is all the activities of the management that determine the maintenance
objectives, strategies, and responsibilities, and implementation of them by such means as
maintenance planning, maintenance control, and the improvement of maintenance activities and
economics.
First, to develop the maintenance, we must familiarize ourselves with the related
international or local maritime regulations, such as the classification society rules of this ship,
SOLAS, ISM Code, and others. After that, determine the goals and objectives of the maintenance.
Maintenance objectives are the targets assigned and accepted for the maintenance activities. These
targets may include for example availability, cost reduction, product quality, environment
preservation, safety, and asset value preservation. Next, after determining the objectives, start to
make the maintenance strategies. Maintenance strategy is the management method used in order
to achieve maintenance objectives, such as the outsourcing of maintenance, allocation of resources,
etc. Then, create a dedicated maintenance team or personnel responsible for the maintenance
activities. After all of this has been achieved, then it is time to create the maintenance schedule
that outlines routine, preventive, or corrective maintenance tasks.
Afterward, for the implementation of the maintenance management, there are still some
things that need to be considered, mainly on the spot or while doing the maintenance. However,
before doing the maintenance, we need to determine which type (or types) of maintenance we want
or need to implement on the ship. There are many types of maintenance, and generally 4 types for
ship maintenance, such as corrective, preventive, risk-based, and condition-based (predictive)
maintenance. In this digital era, maintenance is beginning to be computerized, cloud-based, and
done remotely. Hence, it is better to utilize a “Computerized Maintenance Management System”
(CMMS) software to track and manage maintenance tasks, schedule inspections, and record
maintenance history. This will help in data analysis and decision-making.
While doing the maintenance and implementing the maintenance strategy (management),
there are many things to not be overlooked. Documentation and record-keeping are crucial to
maintaining detailed records of all maintenance activities, including dates, personnel involved,
tasks performed, and components/parts used. This act of documentation is crucial for audits and
analysis. After that, it is also important to do budgeting and cost control of the maintenance
activities by monitoring expenses and identifying cost-effective maintenance strategies. Also,
conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with regulations and internal procedures and do
continuous improvement by regularly reviewing and analyzing maintenance maintenance data to
identify trends, areas for improvement, and opportunities to optimize maintenance processes.
