PRE LAB 5:
A voltmeter is a device used to measure the voltage difference between two points in an
electrical circuit. It is typically connected in parallel with the component across which the
voltage is being measured. A voltmeter has a very high internal resistance, which ensures that it
does not significantly affect the circuit being measured.
To measure the internal resistance of a galvanometer, a known voltage is applied across the
galvanometer, and the current through it is measured. The internal resistance can then be
calculated using Ohm's law.
Ammeter design using a galvanometer involves adding a shunt resistor in parallel with the
galvanometer to allow it to measure higher currents. The value of the shunt resistor is calculated
based on the desired range of the ammeter and the resistance of the galvanometer.
To measure the internal resistance of a voltage source, a known load resistor is connected across
the source, and the voltage across the resistor and the current through it are measured. The
internal resistance of the source can then be calculated using Ohm's law.
Overall, these techniques are essential for accurate measurement of electrical quantities and for
designing circuits that can accurately measure current and voltage.
