BUILDING TASK 2 ANSWERS - DISCUSS BOTH SIDES - THE ZOO

The most tricky thing in Writing Task 1 is figuring
ut how to ORGANISE the information you write.

Also, you don’t want to spend too much

TIME
Writing Task 1. Task 2 is more difficult,
so you
need to do this as QUICKLY and
EFFICIENTLY
as possible.
In this example, we will look at a BAR
CHART from
Cambridge 10 and see how we can write Task
1
APPROPRIATELY.

WRITING TASK 1
ORGANISING INFORMATION.
First, we need to
identify what DATA is
SIGNIFICANT.
To do this we should identify ?
LEADERS and LOSERS
and also the things that were
in
the MIDDLE plus any
STRANGE DATA .
Now you know this you can ?
start
TASK 1!

WRITING TASK 1
ORGANISING INFORMATION.
The bar charts detail the choices made by graduates
and postgraduates in the United Kingdom in 2008.
The data is split into four categories, namely: Part-
time work, Voluntary work, Further study and
finally Unemployment. Most graduates and
postgraduates decided to further their study, whilst a
small minority decided to engage in voluntary work.
There were a greater percentage of postgraduates who
went into part time work compared to graduates, while
a similar percentile figure from both demographics
became unemployed.

The overview describes the data!

First, it PARAPHRASES the question,
Then the FOUR CATEGORIES are named
and finally we talk about the GENERAL
TRENDS
including the STRANGE DATA.

WRITING TASK 1
ORGANISING INFORMATION.
PARAGRAPH 1:
WINNERS
AND LOSERS

In terms of both graduates and postgraduates,

continuation of study was the most popular choice.
29,665 graduates opted to remain in education, while
2725 postgraduates did the same. In contrast, only
3500 graduates chose to do voluntary work, while
similarly only 345 postgraduates decided to do so.

Paragraph 1 deals with the WINNERS and the

LOSERS.
Note that now I detail the SPECIFIC NUMBERS.

WRITING TASK 1
ORGANISING INFORMATION.
PARAGRAPH 2:
THE MIDDLE GROUPS
AND STRANGE DATA

The percentage of postgraduates who entered part-time work

were significantly higher than that of the graduates. From the
postgraduates, 2535 chose this option, while among the
graduates, only 17,735 did the same. However, the amount of
students from both groups that became unemployed
accounted for a similar percentage on both graphs. 16,235
graduates could not find a job, whilst 1625 postgraduates
were in the same situation after leaving education.

Paragraph 2 deals with the MIDDLE GROUPS,

including the CONTRAST in DATA between
graduates and postgraduates in PART TIME
WORK.

A. The benefits and drawbacks of keeping wildlife in captivity have been hotly
debated for decades. (2) Some believe that the operation of such places is a form
of animal cruelty, while others argue that the zoo plays a role in preventing the
extinction of endangered fauna. (3) In this essay I will explore the arguments of
both groups before expressing my advocacy for the latter opinion.

(1). In regards to the first group, they often hold an image in their
mind wherein they liken a zoo to a prison. (2) They imagine
unsanitary living conditions, little daylight, poor food and abusive
guards patrolling the park at night. (3) However, I believe that such
places are generally well regulated and most often funded and
maintained carefully by local governments. (4) Take for example,
Singapore Zoo, a well developed facility, divided into specific areas
for different species with caring staff who take care of the animals
medical and dietary needs.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

(1) The opposing argument is that zoos actually help to ensure species
are not wiped out. (2) In contemporary times, wildlife attractions can
often play a role in returning an animal from the brink of extinction. (3)
I am in vigorous agreement with this notion as I believe strongly in
supporting nature conservation. (4) It is through the efforts of such
programs and initiatives undertaken by zoological institutes that species
such as the giant panda, black rhino and the American bald eagle are
still with us today.

(1) In conclusion, whilst there is a stereotypical image of the

zoological world as a place of imprisonment and torture, I believe
this is rarely the case. (2) I firmly believe it is the purpose of most
zoological institutions to preserve and maintain animal species
for future generations to enjoy and I hope they will be used as
such in the future.
