Wiring hints for a speed encoder

An encoder to measure the speed of the motor shaft is essential for a correct operating closed loop speed control. There is a huge
variety of speed encoders available on the markets, which differ in mechanical and in electrical specifications.
The Schwarzmüller inverters are designed for the use of one of the most common types, which is an encoder with
• open collector
• two binary signals
• approx. 90° phase shift between the two signals
• approx. 12V supply voltage, max. 100mA current consumption
• min 32, max. 1024 pulses per revolution
Supply voltage and current consumption
The inverter delivers the power supply for the encoder. The output voltage is approx. 13V, the current is limited to 100mA.
The output is short circuit proof.
The inverter measures the current consumption of the encoder and supports this information to the application software.
The application software can define upper and lower limits and in that way can detect broken plus and minus wires and also
damaged encoders.

Sequence of the two signals

The sequence of the two signals delivers the information about the direction of rotation.
At the inverter input side the two signals are named A and B.
Requirement for the inverter:
When the inverter is commanded to supply positive motor speed, then it creates an
output sequence U. V, W and it expects encoder signals A before B as feedback of a
positive speed.
A

B
Two possible situations on the motor side:
A very common speed encoder is the sensor bearing type. This can be mounted into
the motor very flexible. The manufacturers of these sensor bearings usually also use
the naming A and B for the two signals, but not all the motor manufacturer mount the
sensor bearings in the same way. So it can happen, that the A signal comes before the
B signal or vice versa. In one case the wiring to the inverter has to be 1:1, in the other
case, the wires have to be crossed.
